Today is National Book Store Day.

From PW:  More than 100 bookstores across the country are planning to participate in the PW-sponsored event National Bookstore Day this Saturday, November 7. Event organizers are hoping promotions tied to the day will attract local and national media coverage—and, in turn, draw new customers into bookstores. “The number of stores already signed up meets our rosiest hopes for this first year. Many of the stores celebrating National Bookstore Day are recognized nationally as leaders, so we're gratified that this idea has been endorsed by these savvy booksellers,” said Ron Shank, PW group publisher. Among the offerings that bookstores are planning a...Read More

November 1st was the big day.  NaNoWriMo officially started.  For those not in the know, "National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lo...Read More

Are you sick yet on all the Halloween candy?  I am and I didn't even go Trick or Treating, but all my nieces and nephews gave me some and I'm not strong enough to say no.  Those yummy little Snicker bars really add up.  Now here's the news I heard this week.

From Stacey Agdern:
Alison Brennan’s luncheon speech hit at the core of the 25th NJRW Put Your Heart in a Book conference. ...Read More

Yesterday was Trick or Treat day here and I'm exhausted from watching the kids run from house to house begging for candy.  I come from a large family and we had a witch, a football player, a queen, a bumble bee, a lady bug, a hobo, Tinkerbell, Beaker (from the Muppets) and 2 moms with bathrobes, curlers and facecream (the scariest ones).  The most clever coming to the door was a boy dressed as a pizza delivery guy who used his pizza box to collect his loot.  Because they ended up with so much, the kids were willing to share, so I got all the Almond Joys.  I plan to much on them while watching today's Sunday videos.

Thanks for all the great suggestions of books for the 7th graders to read.  I've heard from several authors and publishers and once we decide on a book, I'll let you know.  After the class reads it, we'll be having a video conference with the author to discuss the book.  I'll be blogging and doing a Drive By Video™ about the event.  Now here's some of the books the YA readers have read this week.

I spent Thursday morning at St. Matthew school in Oak Creek, WI visiting with the 7th grade class.  Since I started the Saturday morning Young Adult program, I'm always looking to recruit readers and when I was invited to speak I thought it was a great opportunity to try to start a YA book club.  Ms. McDonald, the teacher agreed.  We even did a Drive By Video™.

But, back to the visit.  I was welcomed with cheers and awe that I actually knew authors (I personally think the kids were just happy to have something different happen in their school day, but I'm not complaining).   I talked about my love of books and how they led me to all the wonderful things I now get to do.

happy thursday Pictures, Images and Photos

I'm not sure authors always realize the impact they have on readers.  Just sharing a few minutes of their time can mean the world to someone who has read your book.  Beyond Her Book blurbers Joysann and Heidi caught up with a couple of authors recently and are sharing their experiences with us today.

Today we have the honor of welcoming Dorchester editor Leah Hultenschmidt.  As many of you requested, here's someone to answer those burning questions about getting your book published.

Many unpublished authors have created a web site as part of their preparation for publication. What do you recommend these authors post on their sites? How much of their manuscripts and story ideas should they be sharing with the public?

When I’m interested in a proposal, one of the first things I do is Google the author’s name to find out more information.  It&rsq...Read More
