Kate Duffy: A Legendary Editor

September 29, 2009
Kate Duffy, Editorial Director at Kensington Publishing died Sunday.

For me, Kate was always larger than life.  People talked of her in hushed tones and with reverence.  I met her at an RWA conference and felt I was in the presence of greatness.  It wasn't in her looks, but in the way she spoke.  Kate wasn't one to mince words,  she said exactly what was on her mind.

My favorite Kate moment came during a conference after Kate had just done a panel.  We were shooting the breeze when a woman approached and needed to ask Kate a question.  "I just got a rejection letter from Harlequin and I don't know why," the woman explained.  "And since you work for Harlequin, I thought you could tell me."  "I don't work for Harlequin," Kate tried to tell her, "I'm with Kensington."  But the woman wouldn't listen and thrust the letter at Kate demanding an explanation for the rejection.  Kate handed the letter back and said, "Write a better book."

I did manage to talk her into doing a Drive By Video™ for me.  It's very short, but very Kate.

Bottom Line:
You will be greatly missed my friend.

Kate Duffy was indeed a force in the publishing world. We became friends in 1983 when I first met her at an RWA Conference. What an amazing editor she was. She will truly be missed by her friends and by her authors, but even more so by the unpubbed authors she had yet to meet and publish. Goodbye, dear friend. You were, indeed, the Dancing Queen of the publishing world.

I didn't get a chance to work with her, but always had some interesting conversations with her at RWA and RT. She was definitely a Force! And one of the nicest, most helpful editors in the publishing business. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.

Kate was a fun companion, a thorough editor, the best conversationalist for drinks and dinner. She got my foot in the publishing door and I'll be forever grateful. AT M&M Saturday, we'll definitely drink to her memory and tell Kate stories.

I am devastated by this loss. Kate was a wonderful, generous person as well as a great editor and friend to Romance. She was never my editor, but went above and beyond to help me once when I asked for her advice. I knew she would tell me the truth and I knew she would help. She was just a wonderful lady!

What do you say about a woman who lived with such strength, honesty, and courage? Maybe this . . . thank you, Kate, for doing all you've done and for sharing your wisdom and gifts with the world. We were blessed to have known you!

Mark Henry commented:

Actually, despite being pubbed by Kensington, I think it was you, Barbara, that introduced me to Kate at RT in Pittsburgh. She was grandly brash and persuasive as hell, dragged my butt to the awards banquet and made me sit next to her to chat. She could tell it was my first RT and did everything she could to make me feel welcome.

She'll be missed.
