Cleveland Rocks

May 19, 2009

Hi , joysann here. I'm givi
ng our hardworking Barbara another day off. She needs to rest up before she starts doing all that conference hopping she's planning so she can keep us all well informed and entertained, and stay away from any more bumps and bruises.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame isn't the only thing that rocks in Cleveland. So does the NEORWA - North East Ohio Romance Writers of America.

Saturday I had the opportunity to learn everything I wanted to know about writing a high concept story idea. Though my ambitions to produce a novel are nil (or "love" as they say in tennis), the aspiring authors and already successfully published authors (like Erin McCarthy and Donna MacMeans) that attended the NEORWA Workshop seemed to profit a lot from the presentation. I could almost hear all the mental gears and cogs and wheels of the writers around me crank into action, and could sense the creative energy filling the room. They were practically smokin'.

Prolific author Lori Wilde gave her
Got High Concept? presentation. She shared the strategies that have brought her book ideas to the attention of even Hollywood. She proved to me her devotion to her art when, while describing the plot of a story she seemed to be picturing in her head, she burst into tears, and nearly had us joining her.  Now that's enthusiasm. After the eye blotting, everyone grabbed up their pencils and started scribbling away.

Thanks to the members of NEORWA, for allowing me to attend, share their lunch, and have the opportunity to meet and talk with them. It was a fine day.

NEORWA Published Authors: Jamie Denton, Olivia Parker, Mary Ann Chulik/Solange Ayre, Erin McCarthy, Tiffany Bryan, Lori Wilde (guest), Donna MacMeans, Dianne Miley, Sandra Wickersham-McWhorter

Bottom Line:  Now I should be able to write high concept blurbs.

Joys Ann - What a fun day to sit in on a writers meeting and hear how things happen behind the scenes of producing a book. Sounds like it was an interesting talk.

Joysann,

It was a joy to meet you! I had a wonderful time presenting High Concept, even if I did get a little teary eyed.

I love when writers burst into tears (or wild laughter) about a book. That's how I know it'll be a good one :)

It was a great workshop. Lori Wilde's workbook will be invaluable. I went away motivated to start burning the midnight oil again. Cute drive-by video! Cleveland Rocks!
