Your Favorite Character Starring...
September 10, 2007

I love books, movies and television, in that order.  So what happens when they take a beloved book character and put a real human face to it.  Well, sometimes it works and most times not, but I always hope for the best.

When I started reading Kathy Reichs forensic anthropologist (and what the heck was that anyway??), Dr. Temperance Brennan, years ago I pictured Patty Duke (come on, I did say years ago).  You know, kind of small, but tough know it all.  I think they did a pretty darn good job casting Emily Deschanel on the tv show Bones who plays her straight with such honest naiveness.  Of course, throwing David Boreanaz in the mix was a stroke of genius.  I mean, I would watch him opening cans of beans.

Over at Sophie Kinsella's website, they're all up in arms about British actress Isla Fisher (who??) playing the beloved,  pampered spendthrift British Becky Bloomwood as (gulp) an American who lives in New York.  What are they thinking? Why change a winning combination??

Way back when Sue Grafton was only up to the letter D, I heard her speak at a local library.  She said that she felt her readers each had a distinct vision of Kinsey Millhone and she didn't want that vision to be tainted by having a specific actress play the part.  Sue swore she would never sign away the rights for her tough as nails PI to have real person's face attached to it.  So for me, I see Rosemarie DeWitt (from the tv show Standoff).  She looks like a no-nonsense kind of person that has a haunted past, but has a heart of gold.

Then we have the much anticipated Stephanie Plum movie, which according to Janet Evanovich was optioned over 10 years ago.  What the heck are they waiting for??  Janet's pick for Stephanie...Sandra Bullock and I agree.  Her hair alone from Miss Congeniality did it for me.  (Big Jersey hair)

So, who would you like to see playing your favorite characters on the big or small screen?  Feel free to talk about your own characters or someone elses.  Be as wild and crazy as you want.  Anything goes...

Bottom line:  I would be cast as Connie, the big busted, heavily made up office manager of Plum Bail Bonds...it's only make believe, you know.  (Sorry, no picture available)

Oh, Sir John Smythe, from Elizabeth Peter's Vickie Bliss mysteries HAS to be played by Cary Elwes.

Clive Owen as James Bond! Daniel Craig was servicable, but Bond as decribed by Ian Fleming is much more in the Sean Connery/Timothy Dalton mode. Good-looking but dark-haired with "cruel eyes and mouth." Hugh Laurie as Sherlock Holmes! Basil Rathbone is still the standard by which all others are judged! But, he's gone...

Yes, I know Bruce Alexander's "Blind Beak" series shows Sir John Fielding as older, overweight, and not attractive, but whenever I read those books, it's Johnny Depp wearing the blindfold.

I am about half-way through the Holmesian cannon, and I could not agree more with the idea of Hugh Laurie as Sherlock Holmes! Who should we talk to about getting that done? But now for the hard part: Who will play Dr. Watson?

Sorry -- but as much as I have been a fan of Hugh Laurie, long before he had an American accent, I just don't believe that a House is a Holmes.

I think a better question is who will play Lula? And Grama Murzer? I just love those characters...

Isla Fisher is actually Australian. (She's an ex-soap star--Aussie soap stars all run off to live in England eventually. She's engaged to Sacha Baron Cohen.) As I understand it, Hugh Laurie's character in House is in fact based on Sherlock Holmes, with his sidekick James Wilson (the oncologist played by Robert Sean Leonard) filling the Watson role. So House-Holmes, Wilson-Watson.

There has been lots of speculation on JD Robb's series (I think the options sold). Some of the names I heard dropped for Eve and Roarke don't fit my image of them at all. *grin* and I don't think I will watch. Last year they made 3 of Nora's book into movies and I passed. Didn't like who they picked for the characters and nothing replaces the book. It's fun to chat about who you think would play your favorites characters, but in the end a script just can't replace the book. Have a great day....

Lula is definitely a pre-weight-loss Latifah. I always think of Fran Fine's Grandma Yetta as Grandma Mazur.

I'm late to the party but I think Estelle Getty of the Golden Girls would have been perfect for Grandma Mazur. And Olympia Dukakis should play Stephanie's mom. Latifah could do Lula, or if Jackie Harry was younger she would have been just the one. Now the REALLY important question is who will play Joe and Ranger???

Definitely Clive Owen as James Bond. But how about ANthony Hopkins as "The Blind Beak" in the Alexander series? And Giancarlo Giannini as Detective Brunetti in the Donna Leon series? - Clea
