Your Turn Friday
February 15, 2008

Yesterday was Valentine's Day and I hope you all felt the love. It would have been my Grandma's 98th birthday if she would still be with us. One of my favorite memories was when I wanted to take a picture of her. Would she just stand there and smile? No, she had to be doing something and usually it was pretending to be talking on the telephone (not a cell phone...a real one, with a curly cord and a rotary dial). Grandma loved action shots. She was a classy lady and I deeply miss her.
Now, once again it's
Your Turn Friday. I'll tell you what I've been reading for the week and you can let me know what's been in your hot little hands this week (bookwise of course).

Because I was snowbound at my mom's after a run to the post office, I opened a package and inside was the second book in
Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld series,
The Darkest Kiss. I knew I had book one at home, but please, look at that cover, I was a goner. By the next morning I finished it and couldn't wait to get home to read
The Darkest Night. There was no problem reading these out of order and they were both unbelievably good.
Immortal warriors are angered because Pandora is selected to guard the famous box. To prove they are better, the warriors steal the box and release the demons within. To punish the warriors, the gods link each warrior with a demon.
In
The Darkest Kiss, Lucien/Death is scarred and wants nothing to do with women. Anya, goddess of Anarchy feels the need to conquer Death. When the gods order him to execute Anya, Lucian discovers that he and his demon finally have something in common.
Lucien and Anya's relationship is anything but serene. Exhilarating and exasperating, both verbally and physically, these two break the mold for a tender, loving relationship. A screwball (but very dark) comedy for the paranormal set (think Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn in
Bringing Up Baby meets
Mr. & Mrs. Smith on Mt. Olympus).

And, backwards as I am, I read
The Darkest Night (Book One) next.
Maddox (attached to his demon Violence) is cursed to be killed every night only to wake up in the morning with the same fate. Ashlyn Darrow is a human who can hear any past conversation by just being in the same spot it originally occurred. She's never been able to stop the voices since childhood, but hears of an unusual group of men who may hold the key to silence. When Maddox find her trying to penetrate the warriors fortress the voices stop, but can he be sure Ashlyn hasn't been sent by their enemies to betray them?
This book was enjoyable in a different way. The humanness of Ashlyn made this a more tender story even with poor Maddox being murdered every night. Oh, it's still paranormal dark, but there's something about the interplay between the warriors that's sweet, even with all the goriness going on. I'm glad these books will all be out within a month of each other because once you start you're going to want to read them all right away (of course now I have to wait for the third one). This series is rockin'. Don't miss it!

From darkness to lightness, my next book was the delightful
Whose Number is Up, Anyway? by
Stevi Mittman. According to Stevi's website this looks like the ninth book in the Teddi Bayer series (some of the stories are free online reads now). Even starting here, I had no trouble following the storyline and I love the byline: "Life on Long Island can be murder."
Teddi Bayer is a divorced mother of three who owns a decorating service. She also has an affinity for stumbling across murders, this time in a butcher shop. Detective Drew Scoones has it bad for Teddi and isn't thrilled with her being a murder magnet. Add into the mix a goofy ex-husband Rio Gallo, a know-it-all mother and a thirteen year old daughter in love with an "older" man and you have the makings of Teddi's not so great day getting worse by the minute.
There is something in Teddi's life we each can identify with that makes this book so endearing. We laugh, cry and cringe with her as she tries to shuffle work, family, lover and murder. Be prepared to smile while reading and isn't that a pleasant way to face the day.
Ok, you know the drill. Now it's your turn to let everyone know what books have held you enthralled lately (or even mildly entertained). Because it's all about the books (oh yeah, and the authors too).
Bottom Line: Today is
National Gum Drop Day. Yes, there really are candy holidays, as if you need one after Valentine's Day. And, come on, who really wants a gum drop after gorging on chocolates yesterday? Ok, but only one...or two.
