Your Turn Friday
May 2, 2008

Before we get started on Your Turn Friday, I though I'd mention that we have now moved into the month of May, the 5th month of the year.  In 5 more months stores will have up their Christmas decorations and I haven't even had a chance to wear my sandals yet!  Is it just me or are the years flying by at an alarming rate.  It used to take forever for my birthday to arrive and now it slaps me in the face when I'm not looking.  I always have to stop and ponder how old I am.  And to think, on my 20th birthday I was already saying "I'm almost 21."  The almost days are long over.

First up is Phantom in the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon with Dianna Love.  This next story in the BAD (Bureau of American Defense) series has Terri Mitchell, former DEA and now with BAD, trying to nail criminal Anton Marseux who she feels was responsible for her partner's death.  Also on Marseux's tail is Jamie Drake, fresh out of prision, looking into his brother Nathan's death.  Or is it Nathan's phantom who's investigating?  Once they start working together, Terri and Drake stumble into something bigger than a drug dealer.

I expected a simple revenge story, but the threat of biological terrorism threw this book into a whole new realm.  Lots of action, adventure and creepy, evil organization, along with hot, ex-military hero, make this writing team a winning combination.

Next I read, To Taste Temptation by Elizabeth Hoyt. Lady Emeline Gordon is a young widow who's brother was killed in battle.  Samuel Hartley, a rich Boston business owner, who fought in the same battle, comes to London to find the traitor who betrayed his regiment..  As a cover story, he asks Emeline to prepare his sister, Rebecca, for her step into Society.

Elizabeth always manages to surround her hero and heroine with the most delightful side story.  This time, the tale of Four Horsemen who each go their own way (which I'm look forward to following this story line in the next three books).   Delightful, engrossing and in my must reread pile.

I love downloading library books onto my iPod, so I can listen to a lot of "golden oldies" whenever I want.  In  Nobody's Baby But Mine bySusan Elizabeth Phillips,  super smart physicist Jane Darlington is lonely and depressed on her 34th birthday.  When her young neighbor stops by to borrow coffee, Jane finds herself confiding her wish to have a baby.  This sets into motion a plot to pretend to be a high priced call girl as a present to Chicago Stars quarterback Cal Bonner, who she imagines is dumb enough to offset her intelligence.  What she doesn't plan on is Cal's morals and own smartness level.

Ok, the plot sounds goofy, but believe me, SEP really makes it work.  The interaction and snappy dialog between Cal and Jane spark and sizzle, along with their attraction for one another.  Cal's backwood's grandma is a hoot.  I read this book years ago, but really enjoyed this reader's style, so I'm off to find more.

Now it's your turn to let everyone know what you've been reading lately.  As always, if you have problems posting, email me here.

Bottom Line:  Just thinking that some people still haven't taken down their Christmas decorations yet, so, at this halfway point, they might as well just leave them up.

Just finished Jennifer Greene's Blame It on Cupid: satisfying and warm as a hug, with a slightly scattered heroine, real-life kids, and one of those good guy heroes you want to take home with you.

At the grocery store last week, I impulsively picked up New York Times Bestselling Author, Karen Kingsbury's latest "Oceans Apart." I'd never read any of her books before but the plot sounded intriguing: Eight years ago, during a stormy weekend on the shores of Hawaii, Connor Evans broke his vows. He's kept his secret, until the woman from Connor's past dies, leaving behind a young son...Michele never thought her family was perfect, but they were happy. Now her family is on the brink of destrcution. Will a lonely child help bridge the distance between them--before it's too late? Okay, the back cover blurb hooked me. Debbie Macomber's comment on the cover "I found this book impossible to put down" pushed me to the check out stand. And, while waiting to check out, reading the first couple pages told me the style of writing was to my liking. I loved this book and like Debbie, I found it impossible to put down. Even though I had a thousand other things to do Sunday, I read it in one sitting. Oceans Apart is definitely on my "highly recommend" list and you can bet I'll be looking for other books by Karen Kingsbury.

Virginia, Blame it on Cupid is actually in my TBR pile. I'm looking forward to it.

Cindy, I've never heard of this author yet, but it sounds like the perfect gift for a friend of mine.

Hi Barbara - Thanks so much for the wonderful post on Phantom In The Night. We had a blast writing that book - almost as much fun as walking the locations with you in New Orleans last fall. [Barbara got us inside one home with her effervescent personality...] Also - Love the post on Brenda Novak's auction. I'm sure that helped her have an incredible first day. You are such a good support to so many people. We all appreciate it. Dianna

I just finished listening to the 2nd book in the Temeraire series, Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik. Since Temeraire is a dragon of royal Chinese descent, the incensed emperor sends a delegation to England to coerce the return of Temeraire. Temeraire won’t leave Captain Lawrence, so the two embark on an exciting and exotic voyage halfway around the world.
The Books on Tape audio books (really CDs) are done very well. Simon Vance, the reader, enriches the tale with his voice characterizations and adds to the enthrallment of the story itself. On to Book Three…
BTW my TBR pile is already of insane proportions, but reading this blog and comments have added at least 4 more books to the list. I’ll have to give up my day job!

Rita, count me as a Tess Gerritsen fan, too! I'm working my way through her backslist, just finished Vanish. Went shopping yesterday, and among the books I bought are Elizabeth Holt's To Taste Temptation, Naomi Novik's His Majesty's Dragon, and Celeste Bradley's Duke Most Wanted. Now all I need is time to read!

Hey Barbara, We met at RT this year, and I'm just dropping by to say hi! Not sure if you ever read YA fiction, but if so, I *highly* recommend The Hunter's Moon by O.R. Melling. It's absolutely brilliant and the imagery is phenomenal. The following two in the series, The Summer King and The Light Bearer's Daughter are amazing too.

Hello, Barbara! Had lunch with you at RT (with the house hunk!) and dropped by to say hello... Hmmm. I just finished re-reading Caught in the Devil's Hand by Ruby Duvall (e-book!) and Teaching Molly by Desiree Holt (Judith Rochelle --e-book!) Have to say that most of my reading is done on a digital reader so if the book isn't in e-book form, I likely won't get around to reading it. :(
