Freaky Friday Friends
November 9, 2007

Well, you know on Fridays I talk about the book I've been reading for the week and let you post your reads.  But before we get to that, I'd like to thank everyone who befriended me this week on MySpace, as my experiment into internet networking continues.

One month after setting up a homepage, I now have.....drum roll please...305 friends!!  The honor of being number 300 goes to author Leanne Burroughs.  I couldn't have done this alone.  Author Deborah Macgillivray rallied all her friends to visit me (and then later messaged me congrats and said 1000 by New Year's.  Maybe New Year's 2020).  Tracy Clark at Between Your Sheets sent out cyber messages and I'm sure there were many others I missed, but I'm grateful just the same.

Uhura and Kirk...TV's first interracial kiss

My biggest coup was being friended by William Shatner.  I know...Captain James T. Kirk, T.J. Hooker, and of course, Denny Crane.  He has a terrific site and does video messages on ShatnerVision.  I've been smitten with Bill since the very first episode of Star Trek.  It was on Friday nights and I wouldn't go out with my friends until it was over (no vcrs or dvrs in those days, you either watched it or waited for summer reruns).  I even took my kids to a Star Trek convention in 1987, Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) was there, but not Bill. <sigh>

Now to my read of the week, Silken Shadows by Jennifer St. Giles.  I've been waiting for this one because I loved the first two in the series.  Gemini Andrews is the youngest sister and she can communicate with ghosts, but only her family knows this secret.  Sea captain Deverell Jansen has a dark past and he won't allow anyone to get close to him.  It takes a serial killer to bring them together in this historical thriller.  Think Ghost Whisperer meets a sensual Jane Austen.  Jennifer manages to take horrific murders and mix them with delightful, likable characters along with two sidekick ghosts and that makes this book a keeper for me.

Now tell me what you've been reading this past week.

Bottom Line:
A sea captain and a starship captain...a very good week indeed.

Hi Barb, I just finished reading the Raintree trilogy, and now I'm onto other things. I'm working on On The Prowl, but I've had to put it down while I went back to Sunny's Mona Lisa Blossoming to remind myself what happened there, and I want to read Tempting Danger by Eileen Wilkes before I read her short story. I hate reading things out of sequence, without even knowing what the premise is.

Wow! William Shatner! Definitely my first crush. (Well, maybe after Encyclopedia Brown). I just finished the new Patricia Cornwell, which I had to finish to review. Not... well, not her best. Treated myself to a copy of Lauren Willig's "The Deception of the Emerald Ring" (Napoleonic era spies, romance, and humor) and am very much looking forward to that! - Clea www.cleasimon.com

I finished Paula Deen's Christmas with Paula Deen: Recipes and Stories from My Favorite Holiday. It's a perfect little Christmas present for the cook on your gift list. I'm now reading Boom! by Tom Brokaw, a terrific book about the Sixties. Lesa Holstine, www.lesasbookcritiques.blogspot.com

Barbara ~ Thank you so much for your awesome review of Jennifer St. Giles newest release, "Silken Shadows." I have had the privilege of reading it as well and I believe this is one of Jennifer's finest reads. Her hunky hero is *le sigh* and the heroine is truly gifted - in more ways than one. Thanks again! *hugs* Dayna

I'm reading Night Pleasures by Sherrilyn Kenyon. It's the first book of hers that I've read and I don't know what took me so long! Next week, I'm going to read Messenger of Truth by Jacqueline Winspear ... all the while trying to keep my word count up for NaNoMo!

Read that Silken Shadows had a fantastic Romantic Times review, citing Jennifer as the Grand Mistress of the Gothic. I'll look forward to this book and then to her next installment in the Shadowmen paranormals. Those men are hot and the stories keep you up all night

Hello Barb--just read that William Shatner is not slated to be in the new Star Trek movie next year! Leonard Nimoy is scheduled to appear. Bad news for Star Trek/Shatner fans!
