Romancing the Phone

September 5, 2008
Free ebooks for my iPhone!

My phone died a tragic death in San Francisco, but thanks to Andrew (my son), I now have a brand spanking new iPhone.  I cannot say enough about how wonderful this devise it.  It does everything and really came in handy in New Orleans with the built in GPS that always let me know where I was and how to get to where I needed to be (a feature that is worth it's weight in gold to a directionally challenged person like myself).

I could go on and on about the freedom of checking my email, my blog, Twittering and other neat things on the internet at any time without needing to drag my computer with me.  The phone itself is so easy and the address book syncs up with my computer so any changes go both places.

You can add really cool applications like a flashlight, news updates, radio, tipping for dummies, video poker and a lightsaber.  But my favorite is the ebook reader.  I downloaded a free book to try and found it easy to read and extremely convenient.

So imagine my delight when I received an email offering 3 free Harlequin books to try it out.  They call it Romancing the Phone.

These books are free for your iPhone.  Nice choices.

I immediately went to the site to sign up, but when I went to download the books my name and password didn't match up.  I went in and redid all the information, even changing the password, but still no go.  And now my biggest pet peeve...no person to talk to.  I had to send an email for help (which is guaranteed a response in 24 hours), but I want my books now!  Of course, this also doesn't take into account the hour or so I spent trying to get it all to work.

Maybe it's only me and I'm so technically challenged that I can't figure it out, but please give me a person who can answer my question that would only take about 30 seconds.

Please tell me I'm not that only one who gets so frustrated that they want to just give up and say it's not worth the time and trouble.  How many customers are lost because of this?  Then how many of them tell their friends who now won't even bother to try the product?

Ok, enough with the rants already.  In case you forgot, today is your turn Friday, so rant if you want, but be sure to post what you've been reading lately because others are always looking for new books and authors to try.

Bottom Line:  I never have these problems with a real book.

Would you read an ebook on an iPhone?
Sure, I'd read books anywhere I can get them.
Never, I love the feel of a book in my hands.
Maybe, if someone gave me an iPhone.

It's definitely a pet peeve of mine, no human to speak with when there is an issue. Seems like that is everything nowadays though. As for the iphone, haven't gotten that yet, however, I do have a Sony E-book reader of which I love love LOVE. Perfect for going on a trip and not having to worry about leaving shoes behind to make room for your books *G* Though I still read regular books, because nothing beats the feel or even the smell of a real book in your hand.

I commented in the poll section but will add my two cents' worth here about customer support lines where you have to move heaven and earth to get a human to talk to. So frustrating!

Enjoy your iPhone. I've seen one up close and personal and they're pretty nice. Since they're only available through ATT, we can't get one. But my husband has an LG Dare, which is an iClone. It's pretty amazing too. He doesn't use all the features though because every little one adds a little something more to your cost. And we have to draw the line somewhere. Mortgage payment or music on your telephone? Hmmmm... not a difficult decision. LOL!

Gee, Barbara, now that I bought a Flip because you had one, please don't tell me I need to upgrade to the iPhone too! LOL!

Personally, I probably would read books on it. I used to read ebooks way back when on my little PDA. I don't think the iPhone screen is that much smaller and it has the advantage of being better lit, from what I can tell.

Best of luck figuring it out! It'll probably be worth it once you get it up and running. Having a small device with all your stuff on it can really cut down on the stuff you have to schlep with you when you travel.

I've been reading ebooks from ereader on my PDA for years now. I've even begun using the Windows version of ereader on my laptop. IMO, as a platform for reading ebooks it is the most superior by far surpassing all the others I've tried...and I've tried most of them. I do remember I had a few "learning curve" problems when I first started, but the emails do work so hang in there with it. It's great to have a selection of ebooks with me at all times so I can read what I'm in the mood for at the time and without having to carry an extra large tote everywhere. Have fun and enjoy the free ebooks.

I didn't think it was that hard -- I am wondering did you check out the videos they have on site that take you through the process?

Many thanks to you for pointing out where to get the software for my new iPhone. My library has ebooks but not in the palm/eReader format. (yeah, I like romances) These three are the first on my 'phone so I feel set for the weekend!

Here's my question: does reading an ebook on the iPhone eat up the battery time? I can't watch movies on my iPod anymore, as the battery is sucked up within 30 minutes. It seems to me that all the back lighting needed to read would drain the battery....

I don't have an iphone yet, since they are still exclusive to AT&T. I will get one if they ever open up the phone to other carriers. Hope you can get everything up and running soon. It drives me crazy that you can never talk to a person without emailing first.

Sometimes actually getting a person is worse! There seems to be a disconnect about what customer service actually means. At the momment I'm majorly peeved over a phone encounter with some snotty tech about my new internet system. I don't speak geek so how about trying standard english for those of us who are technologically challenged? I'm off to read some J.D. Robb since Eve Dallas always makes me feel empowered!

I also commented in the poll section.

I have an iPhone and love it. I have read books on it, including an ARC sent to me as a Word document.

Regarding eReader and the HQ books, I had the exact same problem as Barbara. I got it resolved via email.

I'm not so happy with my eReader/Fictionwise experience. Stanza, however was a breeze to use. However, I am reading the Blaze's I got from eReader, but the DRM is massively bad. The unlock code is your credit card number. This strikes me as convenient for the eReader DRM department and a HUGE HORRIBLE disaster waiting to happen for the consumer. Sigh.

As for reading on the iPhone, I didn't find that battery life was affected. But have the updated firmware and that may have helped.

Just want everyone to know that eReader contacted me, fixed the problem and I now have 3 new books on my iPhone that I have already started reading. What a cool thing!

The funny thing about the eReader on the iPhone is that Steve Jobs said a year or so ago that he wouldn't put an eReader on the iPhone because no one read anymore!! It caused such a huge "to do" in the media when he said that! I guess it's good to see that public outrage didn't go unnoticed and that the new iPhone has that lovely feature.

Sheila, Steve Jobs still doesn't get it! The application for the reader was not added by Apple; it was created by Fictionwise (third party app)even though you have to get it through the iPhone store. Today I lunched through the big Apple presentation (via web) and he still didn't say anything about reading. But, good news: no new iPhone model for Xmas, and a new upgrade that is free to users and will be available this Friday.
