Books on the Move
August 6, 2007
Last week, while sitting amongst my ever growing piles of books, I started feeling a little overwhelmed. I had sorted them into groups: already reads, promised to read, part of a series, autographed and gifts to others. The ARCs (Advanced Reading Copies) were arranged in chronological order so I could just grab the next book up without any thinking involved (sometimes thinking is just plain overrated when picking a book). I love reading, that's a given, but to do justice to all the authors I promised to read seemed daunting. Then inspiration struck.
I packed a variety of books in a box and took them to my weekly Weight Watchers meeting (which will be dealt with in another blog). I knew there was one woman there who shared my enthusiasm for the written word and I figured there would be at least one book (and hopefully more) that would appeal to her. My secret hope was that I could entice her to gvie me a short synopsis of the book along with a few words of her own to describe the book.
After struggling through the door with this badly packed box (I have to be the most uncoordinated person in the world and there was no pregnant woman there to help me), I was immediately greeted with, "Hey, what have you got there?" So, I gave my spiel and was amazed by the response. In a matter of minutes, all the books had disappeared and everyone was comparing their finds. Most had never read the authors they picked and were excited at the opportunity to give their opinions. I totally underestimated the appeal exciting, different authors can bring to people who are not sure about trying something new.
This got me thinking about ways we can share our books. How many of us belong to organizations...social, political, business where we come into contact with diverse groups? I plan on keeping a box of books in my car to bring to all the different places I go to in group settings. There is no better gift I can think of then to share the gift of reading.
Bottom line: My Saturn now comes equipped with a library...Dewey Decimal system not included.
