Big Hump Day

May 6, 2009
My apologies for not having the WW Ladies here today.  They did their job, but I'm having a little problem posting it.  Will definitely get it posted tomorrow because we have lots of books to show and tell about.

Which brings me to my topic today.  How do you handle it when you've worked your fingers to the bone typing away on the computer, only to lose all or most of your work.  Now, mind you, I back up often, but sometimes I feel I have a brilliant thought, or the words just seem to flow and BAM! gone...forever.  And I never can seem to recreate them exactly the same way.

Do you go make a cup of tea?  Tell yourself you're brilliant and will come up with something even better, beat a pillow, scream, swear, or just throw your computer across the room?  (which I'm fighting right now).

Bottom Line:  If this post doesn't go through, I'm sorry, but I'm calling it a day and going to the spa (ok, maybe I'll just soak my feet), but then you wouldn't know either way.

Usually I slap my fist on my desk - hard and say very bad words. Then go get a cup of tea or two and calm down.

Once I'm calmer I try to salvage what's left or start from scratch.

It happens. Chocolate is my mainstay for any computer tragedy. In fact, I'm getting hungry for chocolate right now. Enjoy your soak!

I have a scream and hollar tantrum, Barb. Whine to my girlfriends online.

I've gotten into a habit of copying even my posts on blogs cause they have a habit of getting eaten. Failing that, there's bad words, tears, and chocolate.

See...the first comment went through incomplete...are you playing with us??? This is some kind or test, right? For a first-time visitor, LOL! Trying again...

I have a scream and hollar tantrum, Barb. Whine to my girlfriends online.

Then when the brain cells settle from the schock, I remind myself that this is just another step in "revising" what I wrote. That's right. The next time I write it, it will be even more to the point and effective, and I won't even miss the first draft. Because my brain's more powerful than karma!

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it ;o)

Oh I hate it when the computer misbehaves!

Perhaps we've been spoiled by how easy and quick technology usually is, but when things just. won't. work. it drives me crazy.

Usually I need to go walk off the frustration, lest I toss the dratted thing out the window--which really wouldn't be good.

Here's hoping it gets easier, Ms Vey!

Oh yeah, lots of cuss words color the air. I haven't lost any text lately (knock wood) but I accidentally deleted a whole folder of photos a few weeks ago. Grrrrr.

Having lost a lot of stuff while working the day job, I've learned my lesson. I oversave something like every other sentence ... so if I lost something, its not HUGE. But I'm with Anna. I holler, complain, swear and then I calm down and start over.

Oh, Lord...just the thought of ever losing all my writing makes me break out in a cold sweat! I DO have all my manuscripts on CD's.
But I've certainly lost work day to day....After yelling, OH NO! I try to take a deep breath, get a cup of coffee and return once more to the battle.
Notice I said "

Mine went through incomplete also...lol
What I was saying was, "Notice I said "try"...I sure do sympathize with you, Barb!

See backup article I wrote in the latest Romance Writers Report.

:-) Seriously folks, let the computer geeks out there put their considerable knowledge to use. They really do want to save your behinds and keep you from breaking something you might later regret.

Computer problems drive me crazy! The only solution for me is to head into the kitchen and bake something: cookies, pies, cakes or bread. Getting away from the computer and trying something else that is creative always recharges my batteries and helps me find (or recreate) the right words for the story.

I think to myself, I am such a better person than my computer. I'd never do this to someone, & I immed'tly re-type.

I could never drink tea, etc to calm down. All I'd do is think about how unfair it all is, and I'd be angrier than ever.
btw--I had to re-type my whole comment b/c I entered a wrong letter in the security thing. Twice. sigh.
