Second Chance
July 5, 2007

Because I read so much and like to listen to audio books, I use my library a lot.  Since I always insist on only listening to unabridged books (if someone took the time to write it, the least I can do is listen to all the words), sometimes the library selection isn't as great as I'd like it to be.  In that case, I tend to listen to books I've already read.  This is sometimes a good thing.

There have been times when I read a book and it was just disappointing.  I'll come across the audio and give it another chance.  All of a sudden, I get it.  The story makes sense, the characters are endearing and the ending is happy.  I don't know if it is the person reading the book or I'm just in a better place in my life.

This has led me to believe that if reviewers read the same book on different days, their outlook on the story would possibly be different.  Are they having a good day?  Enjoying good health?  Family ok?  Relationship in the toilet?  It all has to have an effect on how a book is perceived.

Bottom Line:  Sometimes even a book deserves a second chance.

Thanks for the enlightenment Barbara! Second chances sometimes do work out! Thanks for that hand lotion recommendation when I got the paper cut from all my reading!

What a super mantra to keep in mind! And it makes perfect sense to me. I always have several books going, and will often put down one I might have been enjoying the night before, and choosing a different one, because that first one just didn't fit my mood at the moment. Since it's too scary thinking of reviewers reading an ARC on a bad personal day, I'm going to pretend I didn't read that part. :) Loved your interview with Sharon, btw. She and Beverly are two of my favorite people. And fave authors, as well.

Oh, I absolutely believe that your current circumstances can either add to or distract from the book you are reading. Also, being a woman gives you the right to be moody, lol, and sometimes the book just doesn't fit your mood! And this is what seperates my favorite authors and books: my favorites are the ones that get better and better each time I reread them. No matter my mood!

I totally agree. Someone will rave about a book and I just don't get it, but if I pick it up later it seems like an entirely different book. This is why I generally don't put too much faith in reviews.

I have actually done this. There are some books I've started several times and could never get into them and then one day pick it up and it's magic.

Thanks for the 2nd chance blog, Barb. I get so entranced going to the library--so many books, so little time!
