Beyond Her Book Polls are Open
September 4, 2008

I'm trying something new.  I want to post polls on the blog, so today is a test.  If this works, I'll be asking for your help with subject matter.  Feel free to email me your suggestions for poll questions, anything goes.  I just want this to be fun and I'm throwing this one out just because it's all I could think of on the spur of the moment.

Does the cover matter when you buy a book?
Yes, I need it to be appealing.
No, as long as the back blurb holds my interest.
Not if I like the author already.
As long as a man with no shirt is on the cover, I'll buy the book.

The polls will be in addition to regular blogs.  So what do you think?  Yea or Nay?

Your votes are anonymous unless you decide to post a comment. You're just a click away from making blogging history at Beyond Her Book. Thanks for helping me out.

Bottom Line: I voted and now I feel like I should pass out those stickers that say "I Voted" to all of you.

I think polls can be fun. :) I want an "other" option in the poll...LOL! Covers have drawn me over to a "new to me author" but they don't influence my buying decision. The blurb and the writing does.

Patrice, thanks for voting and your suggestion is duly noted. Be sure to let me know about other topics you'd like to see "polled" here. I think it could be eye opening and fun.

I wanted to check every answer except the first one. Though I like an appealing cover, I don't need one. But if the author is unknown, I might not pick it up.

Well, dang it. Trying again... I think you might have something here. And I agree with Patrice that there should be an "other". As wishy-washy as I am, I need alternative answers. Good Luck!!

I personally can't be bothered with the cover, however, I have noticed that the catchier the cover the quicker people usually buy it. I have the tendancy to take random authors books and face them forward at the store, and if there is a flashier cover they go quickly.

I've voted for #1 for a couple of reasons. An appealing cover can get me to pick up a new author, especially if it has that mysterious "WOW!" factor. And while covers on established authors are less important to me...the author may not be "established" with every reader. Honestly, ANYTHING that makes you pick up a book is a huge plus, which is the main job of the cover. The sales copy is supposed to close the deal. If they don't work together, then I put the book back on the shelf.

Thanks Barb. I tried to vote on the other blog, but it wasn't accepted. Maybe because I am posting from Australia? Talk to you soon!
