This, that and the other thing 3
October 16, 2007

Today is the day I pass along the news and noteworthy that has crossed the internet into my humble email.  I'll do this periodically as anyone feels the need to let me know what the heck is going on and who deserves the kudos.

This is the latest from Marjorie Liu:

For the next several weeks, at participating Barnes & Noble bookstores (and some Borders?) across the nation, you can find a promotional booklet with the first three chapters of THE LAST TWILIGHT, as well as a preview of LADY OF LIGHT AND SHADOWS by C.L. Wilson! Just look for a display in your Romance section, or ask your B&N bookseller about the promotion. The booklet is doublesided, and this is what it looks like.

As a side note, I was fortunate enough to read the whole story of The Last Twilight (I know you're all jealous) and it is a wonderful addition to the Dirk & Steele series.  It takes place in the jungles of Africa so it is hot, hot, hot.  I actually turned off my phone because I didn't want to be taken away from Amiri and Rikki's nonstop adventures.  Can't these kids catch a break?  But their unfortune is what makes this story and their characters so compelling.

I also have Lady of Light and Shadows pulling me in since I just finished Lord of the Fading Lands,  but it will have to wait it's turn (ok, maybe I'll turn the phone off on Thursday).

Lotus Ink let me know that Love Is Murder on Dark and Stormy Nights X  (Convention) will be held in Chicago -- February 1-3, 2008.  They will be celebrating their 10th Anniversary.  The headliners will be  Lee Child, Tess Gerritsen, Kent Krueger, Barry EislerCarolyn Haines and Local Guest of Honor is J.A. Konrath.  I went to this several years ago and had a blast.  It was very laid back and if you love mysteries, suspense and thrillers, this is for you.

Next up I heard from Lauren Manzella of HarperCollins about their new AuthorAssist program.  “Our Author Assistant tool, and these stunning new Author Pages, demonstrate how we are harnessing our power and scale as a publisher to add value for authors, while connecting them with fans who want more from them,” said Jane Friedman, President and CEO of HarperCollins Publishers Worldwide
.

Forty authors from HarperCollins’ Avon imprint are participating in the pilot program with the mission of “Helping Authors Create and Connect."  What will the fans find?

  • Comprehensive biographical information, including author timelines
  • What authors are working on now
  • An author selected list of press and articles
  • Links to author blogs and favorite online destinations
  • Photo albums, news, essays and more
Let me know what you think.

And finally, Pamela Clare let me know that there will be a sequel to Surrender, a book I enjoyed and wrote about a while ago, only to taunt me with the fact that Untamed won't be out until November 2008!

That's it for this week, but if you have anything going on, or anyone who deserves a high five, just email me at barbaravey@yahoo.com

Bottom Line:  Time to start the 2008 calender of places to go and people to meet.

Good morning Barb! I'm on the list for Elizabeth Edwards' book "Saving Graces" & John Grisham's book "The Innocent Man" at my library--about all I can squeeze in with work & caretaking my parents! Thanks for your suggestions--"Good Girls Do" by Cathie Linz was great!

Hi Barbara! If you're looking for another reason to look forward to 2008 -- Lauren Willig's "The Seduction of the Crimson Rose" comes out in February! I just got the ARC and I know you and I part ways slightly -- I'm a mystery fan/author and you're romance (though I like romance in my mysteries, as in my life!). But I think you'd love this book and this series. I reviewed one of Willig's books (The Secret History of the Pink Carnation) for the Boston Globe, and ended up turning my review into a defense of Regency romances, which I ought to send you if I can find it. And now I'm hooked. Anyway, I was stuck in an ER waiting room for most of yesterday (long story - but my ankle isn't broken! yay!) and plowed through much of this incredibly fun spy romance, all set during the Napoleonic wars. I cannot recommend enough! - clea www.cleasimon.com

Barb, I just want to add my $.02 about Love Is Murder - it's one of the best conventions going. If you love (or write) mysteries, romantic suspense, or paranormals, it's an awesome gathering of fans and writers, and a fabulous way to get to know some of the up-and-coming writers. I loved connecting with other readers and sharing stories.

I have read every one of Marjorie's book and yes, I am jealous that you got to read her latest. I've also read Surrender and you're right, it's a long time until November 2008. I haven't tried C.L. Wilson yet, but she's now on my list.

Clea, I am a huge mystery fan. I've read every Agatha Christie book and although it seems like romance is my thing (I do love it), I'm always ready for a who dunnit. As soon as they start sending them, I'll read them.

You will LOVE Lady of Light and Shadows - I think it's even a little better than the first book, if you can believe that! Happy reading!

Barbara, you're making me want to go curl up on the sofa and read...rather than sitting in front of my computer writing. LOL! Have you read Sarah Dunant's Hannah Wolfe mysteries? I read the first one and loved it!
