YA Blurbs and Your Turn Friday

June 12, 2009
Harlequin truly does rock!  And I thank them for sharing their 60th Anniversary with us and to all of you for coming out to wish them well.  They picked their winner and it's Mz Betty.  So, Betty, please send me an email with your snail mail address and I'll forward it to Harlequin for your prize (barbaravey@gmail.com).

Well, I'm off today to the Historical Novel Society Conference in Schamburg, IL.  This is a new one for me and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to meet new authors and visit with some old friends.  I'll be blogging from there starting tomorrow, so be sure to stop by.  In the meantime, here's what the YA readers have been reading lately.  And don't forget that today is Your Turn Friday, so please leave a comment on what you've been reading.

Going Too Far By Jennifer Echols

Read By Bekah,17

Meg is your common delinquent with blue hair and a painful past. On one drunken adventure to a train bridge, Meg and her friends find themselves being inadvertently rescued by the police officer arresting them. As punishment for trespassing Meg has to ride around for a week with the cop who arrested her. Lucky for her, John After isn’t as big of a buzz kill as she thought he would be, despite his insane obsession with that bridge. As Meg gets closer to him, though, she inches towards what she fears and wants least. But together, it might just be possible to overcome the past that keeps them both from what they most desire.

This was the first non-paranormal book I’ve ever read of my own free will and it was completely worth it. It contained that spark of originality and complexity that is very hard to achieve. I liked the individuality each character possessed because it made each one easy to relate to. This wasn’t your normal “boy meets girl and they fall in love instantly” kind of story. For once, it was an actual portrayal of how relationships develop, despite the hardships they experience.

Dead Girl Walking by Linda Joy Singleton

Read by Maddy, 17

Amber Borden is an average 17 year old. She has a near-death experience and lands in Leah Montgomery's body. Leah is pretty, rich and popular, but Amber soon finds out that being Leah is harder then she expected. First off, she can't tell anybody who she really is, because they will just think shes crazy. All Amber can do is pretend to be Leah,  and try to find her way back to her own body.

As soon as I started reading this book I was captivated. I finished it in one day, and I already can't wait to get my hands on the second book, Dead Girl Dancing.  It surprised me to the end, and I would recommand this book to anyone in high school and collage.

Waiting to Score by J.E. Macleod

Read by Rebekah, 15

Zack Chase
is new in town. Due to the dangerous, fast-paced lives of the local teens, book-loving, gorgeous hockey-star Zach is expected to be womanizing and alcohol-abusive. Zach falls for Goth-gril Jane, befriends her brother, all while being hounded by the jealous hockey team captian, Mac.

This book surprised me in an extremely good way. Sports books are difficult for me to read, but this immediately pulled me in. The first 50 pages were a little slow, for me, but the complex characters and realistic situations did not disappoint. The book is un-put-down-able and will left me in a state of awe. Highly recommend for teens of all ages!

Now it's Your Turn to let everyone know what you've been reading and that means you YA readers also!

Bottom Line:
Reading knows no age bounds, so pick up a book, no matter who it's geared for, and give it a chance.  It may surprise.

All these YA books are great! The blurbs made me want to read them. I read two terrific books this week. Seducing an Angel by Mary Balogh and an ARC of Red's Hot Honky-Tonk Bar by Pamela Morsi.

I've been on reading lots of YA books lately. In the last week I've read Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, Don't Judge a Girly by Her Cover by Ally Carter, and Lord of Misrule by Rachel Caine. All three were wonderful books.

I just recently finished Steve Berry's thriller THE CHARLEMAGNE PURSUIT and am reading Marjorie's Liu's first book TIGER EYE. I didn't know that was her first one until she told me during the Lori Foster event.

Wonderful YA blurbs! Keep those coming.

For the mom above seeking books for boys, my boys also loved Percy Jackson. Now they are reading The Time Travelers (Linda Buckley-Archer) and James Patterson's Maximum Ride series. One of my boys also enjoys Pendragon and the Immortals series by Tamora Pierce.

I'm reading Graceling by Kristin Cashore, a captivating novel about a strong-willed young woman struggling with big questions of power, right and wrong.

DEAD GIRL WALKING is definitely going on my TBR list. Great YA reviews!

Kendra, has your son been reading the NICHOLAS FLAMEL series? (I think it starts with ALCHEMYST.) A lot of our teens at the library really enjoy that series, both guys and girls. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long for the next CAMP HALF BLOOD series!

I'm off to see Anton Strout at a book signing tonight, so I'm brushing up on his story in THE DIMENSION NEXT DOOR and expect to pick up the PANDORA'S CLOSET anthology at the signing. :)
