Summer Must Read List
May 27, 2008

Circle of Seven Productions
Sheila Clover English of Circle of Seven Productions recently blogged about USA Today's prediction that there will be no romance for the summer of 2008 (ironically the ad on the page was for Harlequin).

Says Sheila:  "Okay, they might see a couple, but they are totally down playing that there is ANY romance to it. Romance and summer? What?! What idiot would put those two things together? Summer is for reading books! Literary books. Books that improve your mind. Books written by authors who faked memoirs. Books people will read sitting on the beach, sipping a lovely drink with an umbrella in it, thinking about men burned in an arson fired, or conservative politics or how to suck at golf. That's what Americans want to do during vacation.

No one wants to spend hours soaking up the sun, reading about knights in shining armor, star-crossed lovers, vampires lovers, werewolf lovers, arranged marriages gone good, women being swept off their feet by men who can't live without them, other worlds with dark, mysterious men and the women they long for. Who wants that?"
(Read all of Sheila's blog here)

Ummm....me (raising my hand).  While I can pretty much enjoy reading just about anything with a romance (romance books offer a variety of sub genres) any time of the year, I absolutely love the idea of the house windows all open and the breeze swaying the curtains.  One hand holding the book and the other reaching for my long, tall, cool drink with the little umbrella in it.  And as I'm lounging on my recliner while inhaling the scent of fresh mowed grass, I can be transported anywhere.  At the end of my journey, I can breathe a satisfied sigh of relief that they all lived happily ever after.  Now that's my idea of a summer vacation.

So, tell me, (and USA Today), what do you think should be the summer must read list this year?  It's your list and you can name as many as you want.

Bottom Line:  My tbr pile is as tall and wide as me, so I'm planning on a long, hot summer.  Oh, cabana boy...

Ha! I get to be the first to comment?! When I read the USA Today list I couldn't believe the lack of romance for a summer reading list!!! I may have gone a little over board with my blog, but that's what I think sarcasm was made for. LOL I'm very interested in what READERS think summer reads should be. For my part, I'm reading Turbulent Sea by Christine Feehan (I got an ARC...so you all can hate me now! LOL) I'm actually going to try some more ebooks this summer. I'm travelling a lot and it's so easy to put them on my laptop.

Perhaps they're all romanced out? Too much romance can actually cause a reader to become happy and enthusiastic about life. Can't have that now can we? At least the sales will show the list to be totally off the mark.

Awwww, Sheila. I want that book! I've been waiting for it. Not read romance during the summer? Not in my world! I have a better idea. Let's not read USA Today and call it quits.

I don't know what USA Today thinks everyone should be reading for summer but it's the one time of year I can more or less relax on the chaise outside and tackle looooooong books. So I'm going to work my way through Stephenie Meyer's "The Twilight Saga," especially since the fourth book, "Breaking Down, comes out early August. I'm way past my teen romance years but, after seeing the movie trailer for "Twilight," I'm just going to relax and enjoy.

I plan to have my nose stuck in a copy of The Host by Stephanie Meyer and also La Vida Vampire by Nancy Haddock. I'm also looking forward to a new romance from Julia Quinn, but I can't remember the title - The Lost Duke of Somewhere. As if I care where he's from (snort). And last but not least, I can't wait for I Shall Not Want by Julia Spencer-Fleming. With her books, I can cover two genres at once, since they always feature a great mystery along with another installment in the tortured romance between Claire Fergusson and the town sheriff.

I think of summer as "The Reading Season"--and my season is all about romance. I am now extremely jealous of Sheila because I can't wait to read Turbulent Seas--that's a definite summer read for me!

I just saw my response didn't get on here. It's not quite summer yet, but I'm with Arwen that Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen is great. I'm getting her new book, The Sugar Queen, soon. :)

Mmm, I've got Mary Balogh's Simply Perfect, Susan Wiggs's Summer at Willow Lake, and Jessica Andersen's Night Keepers on my TBR pile. And I can't wait for the new Loretta Chase! I remember summer vacations by the books I read: Nora Roberts's "Dream" trilogy by the pool . . . Robin McKinley in a flat in London . . . Mary Balogh Summer to Remember on a North Carolina beach . . . Summer without romance? Not for this girl!

My TBR list looks the the release date on a Tuesday. I can't wait for JR Ward's Lover Enshrined. I just ordered Wild & Hexy by Vicki Lewis Thompson, Wild for Him by Janelle Denison, and a couple of other romance book titles that escape me at the moment. I'm also going to finish the Twilight series.

Well I just finished it but if a book ever should have been a hard cover it is this one. The story is complex and the h/h are what can I say but wow SE#UAL TENSION WOULD MAKE THE POPE BLUSH Definitely a great beach read, but you will be so engrossed you will forget to switch from sun screen to musquito repellan because you will definitely lose track of time. Joanne Bourne's THE SPYMASTERS'S LADY. WOW FANTASTIC BOOK

It's typical for romance to be ignored on lists like that, and it just goes to show how out of touch certain people are. Sure, I love to read some of the more literary options out there, but not every day, and certainly not as a light fun, and fantastic summer read. I'm looking forward to JR Ward's Lover Enshrined, Wild & Hexy by Vicki Lewis Thompson, Fearless Fourteen by Janet Evanovich and My Prerogative by Sasha White.

That's hilarious! USA Today is maybe a little bit deluded on this one. I plan to read Gena Showalter's new Lords of the Underworld series, NATURAL BORN CHARMER by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and anything by Kresley Cole that I can get my hands on.
