Johnny Damon of the New York Yankees

Before I give you the news I heard this week, here's our baseball pic of the week.  You can send me your news, kudos, or fascinating tibits by emailing me here.  Or, feel free to send me a picture of your choice for our baseball player of the week.

From author Michelle Styles:  The British government have started a new scheme -- the National Year of Reading aimed at getting people to read and to visit libraries. They have produced a lovely advert (Click here to view).   which is a mash of celebrities reading bits of books out loud. be sure to watch out for the bloke in the bar reading the Harlequin Presents!

As part of the scheme, they are having a Writer In Residence programme and I got chosen to be the Writer in Residence For Northumberland. Louise Allen and Natasha Oakley are also involved.   As a writer in residence, it means I get to do workshops/events with my local library authority to support reading and to promote the library in the local area. There is one author assigned to each of the 149 authorities. And M&B were very happy that some of the authors they put forward were chosen. Harlequin Mills & Boon are supporting the whole year in general, particularly as it is also their centenary. This means when I do my events there are pens, bookmarks, post pads and posters which is great from my point of view.  (This is so cool Michelle and congrats on being picked.  Quite an honor and don't you love how her accent comes through?)

From librarian Pam Kloser:  I'm one of the Joliet Public Library librarians that you took a picture of. I saw it on your blog, btw. It looks great. Here's the details on the Author's Fair I was telling you about:  Fifth Annual Regional Author Fair, Saturday, October 4, 2008, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Joliet Public Library.

The Fair is intended to provide area authors with the opportunity to promote and market their books. There is no charge to participate in or to attend the Fair.  Each of our previous Author Fairs has been attended by up to nine hundred patrons.  Email here for more information.  (Great opportunity for authors and readers)

From author Kimberly Lang:  You've been such a great honorary Playfriend that I wanted to let you know that I SOLD my first book today.  Best Laid Plans was bought by Harlequin Mills and Boon for the Modern Heat line!  No release date yet, but I'm on my way (finally!)  (High five to Kim!  Kim is part of the Writing Playground and they will be having a party tomorrow to celebrate, so stop by).

Just a reminder that Brenda Novak's Online Auction for Diabetes Research going on all month, so be sure to stop by and check out over 1,300 items up for grabs.  My donation of a day of guest blogging here at Beyond Her Book will be offered one day only on May 7th. Click here for details.

Bottom Line:   Happy Birthday to my handsome, talented, brilliant son, Keith!!

First of All, congratulations and welcome to the Harlequin Mills & Boon family of authors, Kimberley Lang. I need to catch up with you...

Thank you to Barbara Vey for highlighting the Writer inResidence programme. The National of Reading is a BIG deal here in the UK. There are nine HMB authors who are involved in the scheme. Me, Natasha Oakley, Louise Allen, Kate Hardy, Sharon Kendrick, Susan Stephans, Kate Hardy, India Grey and Caroline Anderson. Bethan Hilliard from Harlequin Mills & Boon said ‘We are thrilled to be part of the National Year of Reading during our centenary year, because if anyone knows the value of a good book, it’s our fantastic Mills & Boon authors!’

Congrats to Kimberley on her sale!!!!!

Brenda's auction is amazing....and bidding got off to a great start. It's just incredible what that woman accomplishes!

And the National Year of Reading is a wonderful initiative. The advert is very funny. I think there are 9 Mills and Boon authors involved in total. They will be wonderful ambassadors for reading and for the Romance genre.

So why does that picture of Johnny Damon make him look like he's auditioning to be the latest movie Tarzan? Substitute a vine for that baseball......

Natasha Oakley commented:

Welcome to the Harlequin Mills & Boon family, Kimberley. The National Year of Reading is a fantastic opportunity. The hope is that the campaign will reach people who don't consider themselves 'readers'. The slogan is 'Reading - Any time, Anything, Anywhere'. It's all about taking the snobbishness out of reading. Encouraging people to read what they enjoy. Just fantastic that authors of series fiction are lined up next to authors of literary fiction. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to it. Should be fun.

Congrats on your sale, Kimberley - and welcome from a fellow Modern Heat author! I'm delighted to be part of the National Year of Reading - because reading is one of life's greatest pleasures and I'd love to be able to bring that joy to people who've maybe been put off books and then discover that there's a whole new world out there...
