Hot Books for Cold NightsJanuary 4, 2008This was a very good week for reading. The cold weather made it an easy choice to stay inside and read some red hot books. So, here's my reads of the week for Your Turn Friday. ![]() First off I read Enchanting the Lady by Kathryne Kennedy. In 1882 London, where magic is a sign of aristocracy, Felicity Seymour doesn't seem to be able to unleash her abilities to gain control of her parent's land holdings. Enter Terence Blackwell, a werelion baronet, who's job protecting the King leads him to Felicity. Is she as innocent as she seems or does she control the Merlin Relic that threatens the Royals? This delightful, captivating fantasy hooked me from the first page and never let go. A charming heroine and dashing hero that you can't help but cheer on. I don't want to wait a year for the next intriguing adventure. Next I breezed through Riding the Thunder by Deborah MacGillivray. Asha Montgomerie is the owner of The Windmill, a diner in a small town. She tends to take in the strays of the community and make them part of her eatery family. Jago Mershan is the businessman who comes to town ready to buy the diner and Asha's brother's horse farm. Unknown to Asha, Jago has a secret agenda that pits his family against hers. This is the second book in the Sisters of Colford Hall Series. (I really have to start getting in on the first books in series. Another to add to my growing list of TBR.)With the backstory of tragic lovers Tommy and Laura, a jukebox with a mind of it's own and a fat cat who seems to understand all that's going on around him, you'll find yourself staying up late into the night just to see what happens next. Spicy, sexy fun with a mystery served on the side. I especially liked the references to the "oldies" songs (which I'm still humming, thank you very much) and flashbacks to simpler times. For me, it was like being in high school all over again. <sigh> ![]() I finished off the week with Enslaved by Hope Tarr. Growing up together in an orphanage in Victorian England, Gavin Carmichael and Daisy Lake are the best of friends until his grandfather comes to claim him. Now a barrister, Gavin never stopped searching for Daisy. Meanwhile, Daisy has become Delilah du Lac, notorious music hall star. When Gavin sees her on stage, he feels the need to save her, but can Daisy ever forgive him for not coming back for her as he promised? A sensual love story that pulls at the heartstrings. Gavin and Daisy have their flaws, but with circumstances and society constantly working against them you can't help to forgive them their mistakes. Hope Tarr's books always delivery that emotional kick that makes me crave more. So what was the last book you read? What do you have coming up (come on, I know you got books for Christmas)? Bottom Line: Sorry to report that I did not meet my goal of 500 friends on MySpace, so I guess I'll have to make do with the 497 friends that I have...<wink, wink> Posted by Barbara Vey on January 4, 2008 | Comments (79)

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Deborah Macgillivray commented: Barbara, thank you for the spotlight for Riding the Thunder. Much appreciated! Yes, the first in the series was The Invasion of Falgannon Isle, which takes place on a wee island in Scotland. I plan to take the sisters on a bit of a tour. The Third, A Wolf in Wolf's Clothing, will be set in England. The interesting thing about this series, I constructed the first three books so they can be read in any order. So many times I would get frustrated because I would buy the second or third in a series and feel like I should have gotten book one and read it first. Thus, I designed my series so the three books can be read in any order as all three storylines are happening in the same time frame.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Christy commented: Hi Barb! The past 7-10 days have been just divine as I've had some time off from work and actually made a dent in my tbr piles!!! I read the Perfect trilogy from Samantha James and I really don't - can't - understand why I let them stay here for so long without picking them up!!! I reread Paula Quinn's Laird of the Mist in one afternoon and I could honestly pick it up and read it again right now! It's brilliant!!! Right now, I'm almost finished reading my very first book from Cathy Maxwell called The Lady is Tempted and I'll definitely be reading more from her. Too bad I had to go back to work and too bad this is our crazy-busy time of year, as I'll now be working so much that I'll be back to reading a few chapters each day! Happy Reading, ladies!!!

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights LAUREL BRADLEY commented: Just chiming in to say that I too enjoyed Riding the Thunder. I'd recommend both it and the Invasion ofr Falgannon Isle. I love Macgillivray's quirky secondary characters. Her historicals (A Restless Knight and In Her Bed) also have those fun, lovable secondary characters. I enjoyed all four of these books and look forward to her upcoming ones.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Caroline Linden commented: I used my holiday reading time to catch up on some classic Mary Balogh books like The Secret Pearl and Web of Love. I still have Monica McCarty's Highlanders (loved the first book), Colleen Gleason's Rises the Night, and Liz Carlyle's new series (just finished Never Lie to a Lady) waiting, and am contemplating a re-read of Driven by Eve Kenin, which was the best book of 2007, imo.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Amber commented: I recently read Riding the Thunder and absolutely love it! The story within a story and the unique characters had me hooked through the whole book. I have the Invasion of Falgannon Isle that I can't wait to read next. I highly recommend Riding the Thunder even if you're not a huge fan of contemporary romance. The paranormal elements weaved into the story are guaranteed to keep you reading. I've also read Macgillivray's In Her Bed and A Restless Knight and loved them both. If you love historicals, these are must reads also.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Marilyn AKA The Playground Monitor commented: Last night I finished a re-read of a book from 2004, FRENCH TWIST by Roxanne St. Claire. And then I promptly started her novella in WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE which also features Allison Brennan and Karin Tabke.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights joysannoh commented: Oh no! More books for my TBR box!! What wonderful recommendations from everyone here; I'll never get through them all, more's the pity. I have The Invasion of Falgannon Isle here on this pile, and I can’t wait to get to those men in kilts (love the cover). I’m also reading Katharine Kerr’s Deverry series as I’m able, I’m on The Fire Dragon now. Thanks for a the terrific suggestions.
January 4, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Jacquie Rogers commented: I'm nearly finished with Riding the Thunder and I have to say, MacGillivray delivers on this book, for sure! Because of my schedule, I've had to read it in fits and spurts, and even then, the book is compelling. And yes, you can't help but tap your foot to the beat of those 60s tunes!
January 4, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Gerri Bowen commented: I've read Riding the Thunder and loved it! The characters are engaging, the love story is wonderful. And I recognized all the songs which added to the story. She's a gifted writer, for sure. I've enjoyed everything she's written.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights JOANN ROSS commented: I'm reading, because I read about it here, Scion's Resurrection by Patrice Michelle and although I'd gotten a bit burned out on vampires, I'm enjoying it a bunch. I also just finished reading Jamie Denton's romantic suspense, The Matchmaker for cover quote, which was sizzling hot with ice pick chills. Now I'm also reading John Sanford's Invisible Prey.
January 4, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Lesa Holstine commented: Few people understand that we DO have cold winter nights in Arizona. I'm reading a different type of hot book, though, Leighton Gage's debut mystery, Blood of the Wicked. Crime, and life, are complicated in Chief Inspector Mario Silva's Brazil. Terrific book.
January 4, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Christina Laska commented: What terrific picks! I think that Deborah Mac gets better and better and better with everything she writes. Riding the Thunder was terrific. LOVED IT. Her characters were engaging and I cannot wait until the third book comes out so I can add it to my keeper shelf.
January 4, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Deborah Macgillivray commented: Joyce, you will have to trade with Barbara. Lol She had Riding the Thunder and you have The Invasion of Falgannon Isle. There was really terrible editing glare in Falgannon. I am sure you will know when you hit it. I didn't do it!! I about spewed my Pepsi when I saw it. Still, it's a wee giggle that doesn't hurt the story...lol. One of those authors "What was the biggest gaff in a book of yours" things. Hope you enjoy!
January 4, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Leeanne Grant commented: I am big fan of Deborah Macgillivray's books. Her historicals are so super, but I think I love this series for Dorchester just a shade more. Hard to choose, but I love the humour in these books. Des and Jago are heart-stealers of the first order.

January 4, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights LAUREL BRADLEY commented: Thanks for the plug for A WISH IN TIME, Deborah. I know this blog is about books, but if you haven't checked out Mike Duncan's CD LOST FOR WORDS (which was mentioned repeatedly in RIDING THE THUNDER), you really should. You have to order it from his site, but it's worth the hassle. I have to continually rescue my copy from my 16 year old's bedroom. He loves it too.
January 4, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Deborah Macgillivray commented: I loose copies of Mike's CD every time I lay it down! He does two version of "Lost for Words", a ballad and a rock version. I loved them both and made two different videos using them. I also have his song "Am I Here" for the Invasion of Falgannon Isle. He's been so kind to give me several songs and I will continue the theme in my next books. I am even hoping to have him make a "guest appearance" in the upcoming one. Mike's mother is Monika Wolmarans, and she is my proof-reader. So lucky me, on both accounts.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Deborah Macgillivray commented: I lose them, too...lol
January 4, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Deborah Macgillivray commented: Joann, you have to OKAY them once someone says add me. I added you. So there, you have at least two!
January 4, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Jody commented: I just finished HIGHLAND WOLF by Hannah Howell, not up to her standards but an ok read. Am now reading the new Jan Coffey- THE DEADLIEST STRAIN. For the person who was waiting to read the new Garwood, get it from your local library or if you can wait buy it in mass market, not close to her old historical voice.
January 4, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Leanne Burroughs commented: Deborah MacGillivray's Riding the Thunder was an awesome book. The perfect follow-up to The Invasion of Falgannon Isle. Jago arrives in town with an agenda. Asha quickly derails his plans. 'Watching' them (because you feel like you're right there) come to grips with their feelings for each other and what to do about their futures leaves you spellbound. The perfect book to read on a cold night - or any night.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Victoria Devlin commented: I admit it...I can be lured to buy a new author by cover only. Eye candy does it every time. But then the author has to deliver. However, I value word of mouth recommendations, so thanks for these Friday posts.

January 5, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Catherine Kean commented: I already have Hope Tarr's book in my close-to-toppling-over TBR pile (I just LOVE the beautiful cover, and the story sounds terrific), and will definitely be picking up Deborah's MacGillivray's and and Kathryn Kennedy's books. Thank you, Barbara, for the great recommendations!

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Jo Webnar commented: Deborah MacGillivray's books are literary jewels that will keep you warm at night. On the down side, they will also keep you awake. It is impossible to put them down!

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Barbara Pierce commented: Victoria, thanks for the praise for Naughty by Nature. I didn't think St. Martin's Press could top the green cover, but have you seen Scandalous by Night's cover? The purple is my new favorite!

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Deborah Macgillivray commented: I am wondering if anyone has gotten a KINDLE reader. My A Restless Knight is available for Kindle and has been selling well, but I haven't been able to find someone who has read it in that format yet. They say there is a waiting list to get a Kindle Reader they are so popular.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Veronica Ogilvie commented: I received a stack of books for Christmas, and have been happily working my way through it. The Marsh Hawk by Dawn MacTavish was the first one I snatched up. This is wonderful highwayman adventure. This writer just know how to tell a story. Then I read Untouched by Anna Campbell. Nifty riddle of book. My first time reading her. Will look for more of this author. I also read In Her Bed by Deborah MacGillivray. I adored this book. I loved the character from her first book, but this was all his story. A lot of wonderful humor. Riding the Thunder is on my list for next, along with Moon Shadow by Lucinda Betts. I have ordered the Enchanting the Lady book. It sounds wonderful. Thanks for the recommendation. I also received the Cat O' Nine Tales. I have to say this is one of the most beautiful produced books. Simply gorgeous. The stories are a great showcase for a talented writer.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Book Sleuth commented: For Christmas, I ended up with several books from Dawn Thompson; Lynsay Sands vampire book, which I really loved; both historical from Deborah (I loved Challon and Ravenhawke!!); Romance Upon a Midnight Clear; Riding the Thunder; and two books by Devyn Quinn. I am wondering about Kindle's weight. It's it tiring to hold. My wrist is weak so I have to wonder will that be a problem?

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to post and be sure to stop by every Friday and leave your recommendations, I know they are appreciated.

January 6, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Gerri Bowen commented: All of these recomendations are great! Some I've read, some are still in my TBR pile, and some have yet to be ordered. D. MacGillivrey's books are all keepers. Dawn Thopmson/MacTavish are always on order, J. Rogers Faery Special Romances and RR Smyhe's Into the Woods are great young adult/adult books-unforgettable, really. L.Bradley's A Wish in Time was also mentioned, and it was a great Time Travel. D.Wylie writes wonderful civil war romances, and Anne Whitfield's works are always well done. I love H. Howell! And anything Mary Balog is autobuy. Thanks everyone for recomnedations!

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Leeanne Grant commented: I finished Kathryne Kennedy's book last night. Couldn't not put it down. Now I am blurry-eyed! It's wonderful. I read the Wilson book and really enjoyed it, too. However, Kennedy's books has more romance in it, so for those of us wanting to fall in love it's so perfect! Good job!! When is the next book in the series coming out?
January 6, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Devyn Quinn commented: Good choices! I have all Deb's books, and have enjoyed them immensely. Ditto Dawn Thompson's books. (I had the pleasure of being in the Eros Island anthology with Dawn and Lucinda Betts, by the way). I still have to have paper books, though. I can't read a book off a screen after staring at a computer for 12+ hours a day. I just like curling up in bed with a cup of hot tea and holding a book in my hands.
January 6, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Jean Harrington commented: Lovin' the postings. Most I've read (above this one) are positive, kudoes, well-deserved, I'm sure, for favorite authors, favorite books. What adds a special touch of authenticity to your blog, Barbara, is the occasional "this one's so-so, wait for mass market, maybe Kindle's too heavy" etc. That kind of tell-it-like-it-is honesty really makes me want to join in. Since I'd rather make love than war, here's a kudo to start. The stellar list of anthologies from Highland Press (i.e. Recipe for Love, Blue Moon Magic, Cat O'Nine Tales) is worth a good look. Each one centers on a suincgle theme, Christmas, food, fairies, funny old laws, cats--take your pick, pick your subject. For slices of reading entertainment you can pick up and put down without wondering "how it turned out" I highly recommend these HP short story collections.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Deborah Macgillivray commented: Ooh, Devyn! Glad you chimed in. This lady is one super hot writer. She has two books out for Kensington Aphrodisia, a s e x y vampire series, Sins of the Flesh, and Flesh and the Devil. Her anthology with talented Lucinda Betts and Dawn Thompson, comes out this coming week, Eros Island.

January 6, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Leanne Burroughs commented: Veronica, isn't Marsh Hawk wonderful? Then again, I haven't read a Dawn Thompson book I haven't liked! Book Sleuth, glad to hear you have Romance Upon A Midnight Clear. Deborah and I both have stories in there, and I think you'll love all of the stories. Our other Christmas book was Love Under the Mistletoe. And no, it's not too late to read Christmas stories. Most of us are so busy running around through the hectic holidays that we rarely take time to sit back and relax and enjoy stories of the most favorite time of the year. Now's the perfect time to kick back and relax and enjoy a good book. Happy New Year, everyone!
January 6, 2008
In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Leanne Burroughs commented: Jean, thank you so much for your praise of Highland Press anthologies! We try to make each of them special. In our busy world so many people tell us they love to read, but sometimes don't have time to read a full book. They feel guilty if they read when they think they should be doing something else. Anthologies are the perfect solution for that, and we've had many people write us and thank us for putting out anthologies. They tell us they can read a story, then go back to every day life and not feel guilty. While they all love actual books, the anthology gives them the option to still read when they're busy or on deadlines. We can all relate to that, and I so appreciate readers taking time to write me to let me know what they think of our stories.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Teresa D'Amario commented: Hi Barb, ssorry to be late to chat, but I wanted to tell you about the hot new series I read - Brenda Joyce has gone paranormal folks! Really! And it makes for an excellent read. So far there are two books in the series, Dark Seductions and Dark Rival. In typical Teresa form I read them in reverse order. Of course that means I can vouch that they work as stand alone books *grin*

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Kathryne Kennedy commented: Leeanne, thank you so much for saying that you couldn't put ENCHANTING THE LADY down and that you were bleary eyed (err, okay, maybe not the bleary-eyed part). To answer your question, the next book in the Relics of Merlin series, DOUBLE ENCHANTMENT, is scheduled for release September of this year.

In response to: Hot Books for Cold Nights Missy Taylor commented: I'm in a quandary on books right now. Three books in some of my favorite series came out this past week: Patricia Briggs' 3rd book in the Mercy Thompson series Iron Kissed, Carrie Vaughn's 4th Kitty book Kitty and the Silver Bullet, and Yasmine Galenorn's Otherworld series 3rd book Darkling. Which to read first has been my question...

And Deb, what a great cover you have. Hot motorcycle dude!
