This, that and the Other Thing Monday
October 6, 2008

Matthew McConaughey
Matthew McConaughey didn't enter the Peturday contest.

Welcome to Monday's This, that and the other thing.  Peturday  (Pet Saturday, thanks Kristen Painter), had our second set of author/pet match ups and we have a 3 way tie:  Kimmy Lane, Dina and Danielle Atwater who got all the answers right.  Well done.  From the comment section, the winner is Nettisue.  And since I didn't hear from the winners of last week's contest, the two new winners are  Ashley Ladd and Christina.  Please email me your snail mail address, so I can send out your prizes.

Here's the winning match ups:

Chloe - Anne Gracie
Max -  Dee Davis
Mountain Barbie - Jill Shalvis
Dolce - Bonnie Vanak

Also Anne Gracie's winner is T12SVLD.  Send me an email and I'll forward it to Anne.

Tune in Saturday for round three of Peturday.

Other people who I heard from this week:

From Michael Gentile of Random House:  Although Banned Books Week is officially over, the third volume of Random House, Inc.’s free magazine “RHI” and corresponding website for teachers and school librarians, which focuses on censorship, remains available.  Click here for the webpage.

Featuring an original poem by Billy Collins; teacher's guides written by nationally-renowned educators; articles by noted authors such as Maya Angelou, Judy Blume, and Ray Bradbury; and contributions from professional organizations including the ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom, RHI, Vol. 3 will help teachers to update their curricula and navigate challenges in their career.  This year's volume also includes a bonus audio CD featuring an original interview with Judy Blume and select excerpts from banned books.

If you are a teacher or school librarian and would like to receive a complimentary, printed copy of the magazine, please email us (highschool@randomhouse.com). (please note: the printed copy is available ONLY to teachers and school librarians).

From Diane Stacy at Dorchester:
The blog you wrote for Leah Hultenschmidt while she is in Italy, is now posted at Romantic Reads.  (If you want to read my pearls of wisdom offered in Leah's absence, click here)

Marianne Mancusi and Leighton Meester
Marianne Mancusi interviewing Leighton Meester

F
rom author Marianne Mancusi:  Yesterday (October 2nd) I attended a charity event in Union Square sponsored by Marshalls. The campaign, Shop ‘Til it Stops, aims to stop Domestic Violence. Anyone who brought in a pair of shoes could get a new pair free. The shoes were used to create a shoe tree sculpture, commemorating the cause.

If you missed the event, you can still help out. For every pair of shoes purchased at Marshalls from now until October 16th, Marshalls will donate $1 to support Safe Horizon. Details here.

Anyways, the coolest thing about the event was that Leighton Meester, who plays Blair Waldorf on Gossip girl, was there. She spoke to the audience, walked a runway, and donated a pair of her own shoes to the tree. I interviewed her afterwards (for Better TV). She was much nicer in person than her character, let me tell you! She was also thinner than she appears on television. (Though in a small bones way, not an anorexic one.) Which makes me only imagine what the 90210 girls look like in real life!

It's Bake Biscuits Day!

If you'd like your kudos (awards won), special interest stories, or special announcements in the blog, please email me at barbaravey@gmail.com .

Bottom Line:  Today is Bake Biscuits Day.  A lovely idea that I've just changed to Buy Biscuits Day.  (Here's a recipe if you feel the need to bake the real deal)

I love that Better tv show. I'll have to watch for Marianne. Obviously, I'm a terrible guesser at the pet game. Next week I'm putting the names in a hat and matching them that way. :)

Darn, I guessed wrong about Anne Gracie's dog. Buying biscuits does sound better than baking them. But we have apple pie, which my husband baked last night. That's even better.

I gave in to temptation and had biscuits and sausage gravy yesterday. The immediate gratification was great, the resulting heartburn not so much. So don't give in, Missy!

Wow Barbara--I wish Matthew McConaughey had been in the pet contest! Just his picture with his dog is "fetching" enough! Keep up the good work--Peturday is very interesting & fun!

I'm with Violet, though I'd take Matthew as my pet. I'd adopt him. :-) Thanks for the contest, Barbara. Fun stuff! Dolce is a sweet dog, and he's adopted. I hope this holiday season a lot of people who are considering buying pets will consider rescuing a dog or a cat first. So many homeless pets out there.

Amanda - I'm so glad you like Better TV! :) I'm actually a producer on the show - so I'm not on air. But I get to do lots of fun stuff, as you can see! Mmm...biscuits!

Oh dear I love biscuits, but baked some apple crisp today. So proud I baked! Love reading your blogs my dear! And woo - any mention of banning books reminds me of Nazi Germany! Yikes!
