This, that and the other thing 5
November 12, 2007

This is one of my favorite blogs to write because it is to give credit, kudos and information all about authors, books and events.  Most of the stuff I get through e-mail, so if you have something interesting you'd like included, e-mail me at barbaravey@yahoo.com

First off, a huge high five to Sherrilyn Kenyon who let me know that she hit numero uno on the New York Times Bestseller List for Upon the Midnight Clear.  Of course, I had to e-mail her back to remind her that I blogged about her the week before the book came out and I'm sure that had something to do with it <grin>  I kind of feel like the Stephen Colbert bump of blogging.  Ok, maybe she would have done it anyway without me, but we'll never know for sure.  Congrats Sherri and it's not too surprising having met your adoring fans, the "Kenyon Minions."  (BTW, check out photos of K-Con on PW's homepage, in the blog section, click on photos)

Next bit of news comes from Deborah Macgillivray who let me know that Dawn Thompson was moved to rehab and was one step closer getting home with Miz Fuzz. Deborah says "Dawn is special lady. She sold her first book when she was 69 and she's had 8 books in less than two years, but contracts for another 9 in next two years. She is a darling woman, who nearly died when she was hit by a car 10 years ago. She's wheelchair bound, doesn't have use of all her fingers, yet she writes circles around me (and I am rather prolific)."  Dawn is  working on her newest, a Anya Seaton meets Stephen King saga and that seems fated since Stephen King's The Haven Foundation meets with her today to assess her recover and possibly give her a grant to aid in getting her back to normal.  So, best wishes for a speedy recovery Dawn.

Finally, "the children" (as "Maven" Linda Howard refers to them) at The Writing Playground will be celebrating their second birthday on Wednesday, November 14.  They'll be doing a book-a-day giveaway every day next week, but Wednesday will be the big day with party favors and goodies.  If you haven't had a chance to check out these 5 talented women be sure to stop by.  They write great blogs (next to mine, of course) and be sure to let them know I sent you.  Thanks for the info Marilyn (aka Playground Monitor).  (Pictured from left:  Kimberly Lang, Kira Sinclair, Danniele Worshsam, Marilyn Puett and Alexandra Frost)

And, nonbook related, a Lambeau Leap* high five to my beloved Green Bay Packers who kicked butt yesterday.  Not bad for a 38 year old quarterback...Brett Favre (star of There's Something About Mary).

*When a Packer scores a touchdown at Lambeau field, he jumps into the stands and is mauled by fans.

Bottom Line:  Monday's are rough enough...find someone to give a high five to, just because (unless you're limber enough to Lambeau Leap them).

Barbara, thanks for the mention of Dawn. Many authors and even non-authors might be unfamiliar with King's The Haven Foundation - thehavenfdn.org/. King was struck by a car in 1999 while walking along roadside and had a long struggle to get back to where he could write again. King was unfortunate in the accident; fortunate that he is one of the 15% of writers that make enough money to have insurance and savings to fall back on. Sad fact: most authors, especially new authors, don't get high advances, and it can be two to three years before they start seeing the bulk of their royalties. What happens if they are hit with illness, disease or a disaster and they don't have insurance or savings? It can be a very rough situation they face. King has, like an angel, fought to bring forth The Haven Foundation. It's an organization where authors and freelance writers who are struck by extraordinary circumstances and have no place to turn for help can see aid in grants. It's an amazing gift of love and compassion, and as you note, The Haven Foundation is considering Dawn Thompson for a grant. Yes, she has eight books out, but it will be 2009 on many of them before she see royalties. No aid from her family, no place to turn, I am hoping The Foundation finds her case worthy of their help. All authors need to make themselves acquainted with this very worthy charity. I am sure they would be open to donations. Sometimes we have to step outside of government agencies that fail to deliver what is needed. So hats off to King for his compassion and dedication to seeing this foundation has come into existence.

And my thoughts go out to Dawn. LOL! My verification letters are NFL - funny since you mentioned Brett Favre.

I just picked up Kenyon's "Upon a Midnight Clear" and plan to make that my next read ... once I'm done with Hamilton's "A Lick of Frost". Best thoughts for Dawn. Her books rock. That's one fear that I have. I'm currently covered by hubby's insurance, but someday he'll retire and we'll have to have something lined up. Wish there was a policy that authors/artists/free lancers can pool under. There used to be such a type of policy for small businesses but think it was done away with. Pity.

A special high-five to some of the older vets, who tend to get overlooked. I'm off to visit my mom's assisted living residence, which is having a special day to honor men and women who served! - Clea www.cleasimon.com

The Haven foundation came in to see Dawn today. Spent an hour and a half assessing her needs that will speed her back to normal. Caring bunch. Originally they were set for the board to met about her case on November 26, but King is in NY and will meet with the board tomorrow!! The wonderful lady, Margaret Moorehouse, who leads the fact finding team has been so super to work with, so prompt in handling the case. So BIG high five for King, Moorehouse and The Haven Foudadtion.
