Vacation's Over Let the Blurbs Begin
July 2, 2008

I've got to tell you, this is the life. Lying by the pool all day, eating whatever/whenever, sleeping when you can't keep your eyes open anymore and hugs and kisses galore. I recommend grandchildren to everyone and if you don't have any, go adopt some. It's the most wondrous feeling, like Disneyland everyday. But, they're off to visit other relatives today, so let's see what books the WW ladies are recommending this week.
Blue Eyed Devil by
Lisa Kleypas
Read by Emily
Haven Travis has always tried to live by the rules her family has made for her. But when she marries a man her father disproves of, she never realized the consequences of her actions. Now two years, and an abusive ex-husband later, she returns home a shell of a woman. She promises herself she'll never marry again. But then Hardy Cates steps into the picture. A self-made millionaire, he can have everything and anyone he wants, and Haven is at the top of his want list. He is the enemy of her family, but she can't help her feelings for him. And when conflicts arise will she be strong enough to trust her heart in his hands?
Blue Eyed Devil is the second in the Hardy Cates series; the first being
Sugar Daddy. I sometimes have a problem reading books that are written in first person, but I was so excited about reading this book, I decided it didn't matter. In fact I think it made the book stronger. The abusive relationship that Haven has to endure with her husband is not one you would wish on anyone. And I was grateful that Hardy was the one to rescue her. I had read about him in
Sugar Daddy and wanted to know his story. Thankfully Lisa wrote it.
Winter Study by
Nevada Barr
Read by Joysann
I must really be a wimp because if I suffered all what Anna Pigeon physically endures by the end of one book, I'd get a new day job, career or no. But that doesn't stop me from finding out what's going on with her book after book.
In
Winter Study, Park Ranger Anna Pigeon returns to Isle Royal National Park in Lake Superior. Closed to tourists during the dead of winter, she's joined 6 others in the study of wolves and moose in the wild. As beautiful as it is, the extreme weather and isolation make Isle Royal a challenge for survival, natural or homicidal.
For years I've loved listening to the Anna Pigeon series (yay Barbara Rosenblat), and I've enjoyed the recent ones more now that the character seems less angsty and dark. Nevada Barr's writing is clever and comfortable, and the descriptions of our wonderful National Parks make me want to go see them now. Beautiful.

The Rogue by
Kayla Gray
Read by Emily
Captain Colby Leighton has been searching the last five years for the elusive pirate, known only as "the Dragon." He has been burned by this man once already, and when he finds a young woman who may be in league with the pirate he has no choice but to keep her as his prisoner. Bailey Spencer has no idea what her captor is talking about. The pirate that had burned down her cottage, killed her family, and beat her to a pulp was no friend of hers. Of course she wasn't in league with him, but Colby doesn't seem to believe her. He decides to use her in his plot to take the pirate down, but through the days he spends with Bailey on his ship show him that she is a stubborn and alluring young woman. But no matter how much he may want her, he won't let her get in the way of fulfilling his revenge against "the Dragon."
The Rogue is Kayla Gray's first novel, and I must say that I can't wait for her next. I greatly enjoyed it, especially the fact the main characters had so little in common, they had to really work to make their relationship a success.
Twist by
Colby Hodge
Read by Joysann
Abbey's world gets twisted out of time when she discovers a peculiar machine in an old house she's renovating. In a flash of light she's thrown into a post-apocalyptic world where people draw together in small communities for protection from creatures of the dark that suck the life right out of their victims. Another twist increases her confusion when she learns the community doctor is the same young man she made a date with only the day before in the world she left behind.
The twists and turns dealing with the time travel conundrum are brain racking, and the action keeps a reader on her toes, or wanting to be. The adventure story kept me up long after bedtime, and I enjoyed it to its convoluted end. My only question is, what's the story with the cats? I really want to know!
What Memories Remain by
Cait London
Read by Ann
Ewan and Hallie Lochlain’s lives were torn apart the day their parents were lost in a storm while sailing. At 18, Ewan was driven from Fairy Cove and the secrets the community has hidden. Now, he’s back to reclaim what is his and to uncover those secrets. While Fairy Cove’s tales of a shadows in the night attracts tourists, the Nightman has stalked Cyd Callahan since she was six. Can Ewan and Cyd break free from the nightmares that haunt them?
As usual, Cait mixes disturbing secrets with strong, fascinating characters to create books with intrigue, anticipation, and apprehension. Searing sexual tension adds to the already combustible stories. Cait London's romantic suspense books will leave you on the edge of your seat and wondering what mysteries are hidden in your community.
Bottom Line: Ok, kids gone, blog done, check out's not until 1. Back to the pool...oh, cabana boy...
