Wis RWA: Celebration/Lori Foster Reader/Writer Get-Together

June 7, 2009
Chapter Service Award winners - Treasurer, Sandra Turriff and President, Mary Jo Scheibl

Saturday morning at WisWRA started off with a delicious breakfast buffet that had me stuffing my face with fresh fruit.  One of my tablemates was Renate, a librarian and aspiring author, who came all the way from South Dakota to meet a specific agent.  She was telling me about a book festival that the state puts on every year.  Sounds like somewhere I need to visit on my travels.

The workshops included Karin Tabke's "It's Just Business, Don't Take it Personally" and Birgit Davis-Todd of Harlequin's "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Harlequin."  There was an agent/editor Q&A panel which always draws a crowd.

Lunch was a Taste of Italy and it still makes my mouth water to talk about it.  Of course, before I finished, Andrew called, so I went into the hallway to talk on the phone (he wanted to know who Henry Kissinger was because there was a reference in a cartoon) and when I returned the waiter had taken my plate.  Just as well, since all that was left on it was dessert <sigh>.  But then the real reason everyone was there was to honor those with first sales, Rita finalist Lori Handeland and Golden Heart Finalist Virginia McCullough, along with the winners of the writing contests, Write Touch Readers Award and Fab Five.

Golden Heart Finalist Virginia McCullough
Next up was a popular interactive event, WisRWA's Got Talent.  Author Shari Anton would read the first page of a submitted story and the editors would critique it without knowing who the writer is.  It always is entertaining and can even result in an editor asking to see more of the book.  Everyone wins then.  Guest Trish Milburn gave tips on "Making Your Setting Come Alive" (and she should know).

The highlight for fans was the Booksigning for Literacy which was extremely successful considering the lousy Wisconsin weather.

Keynote Speaker, Sherrilyn Kenyon, had  dinner goers feeling much better about themselves after she showed her folder from 1992 that was 2 inches thick and filled with over 100 rejection letters.  And this was after she already had 6 published books.  (Some were even from her current publisher St. Martin's Press)

The evening ended with a 25th Anniversary cake celebrating WisRWA's beginning back in 1984.  Everyone gathered for drinks, eats and great conversation to end a long, but fully enjoyable and inspiring day.

Bottom Line:  Happy Silver Anniversary WisRWA and here's to 25 more!!

Beyond the Bottom Line:

joysann here with more from Lori Foster's 5th Annual Reader Author Get-Together.
Dianne Castell and Lori Foster

The Reader & Author Get-Together is a charity event hosted by Lori Foster, Dianne Castell, and Linda Keller to raise funds for charities. They were proud to announce the fantastic donated baskets alone raised some $6,500+ for the One Way Farm Children's Home of Fairfield Ohio, and more was raised for the Animal Adoption Agency, and other donations for troops on deployment.  So besides just plain having fun, everyone is pretty pleased with their efforts.

Author Hamilton Turner signing Duck Adventures

Here is 10 year old Hamilton Turner participating in his first book signing event.
He seemed to be having bang up sales day with Duck Adventures, a project he worked on with the help of his mother. Hopefully, for Hamilton, this is the start of something big. Rumor has it that he donated several copies of his book to a local library with funding issues that could use some assistance with their collection.

Authors Joey W Hill, Jacquelyn Frank, and Emma Holly (seated)

Then, of course, there were authors, authors everywhere, each with a smile, a bit of conversation, and lots of generosity. Wishing I could name each and everyone here, with photos, but so many would take me days to post here. Everyone was gracious and friendly, and I enjoyed meeting so many.

Thank you, Lori, Dianne, and Linda, for showing us such a good time.

The Other Bottom Line:  I'm making my reservations for next year before I leave today.  Hope to see you here.

I was in Cinci for the Reader/Author Get Together and it was beyond fabulous! I can see I'm going to become a regular (and Harrison was an adorable addition to the signing tables).

Looks like Barbara had as good a time at the WisRWA event as we did in Ohio. Hamilton was so adorable and his book is really fun. We had a great group at our table, which included a cameo appearance by the Golden Rooster from Romance Bandits.

It was a fantastic conference. The food outstanding and the conversations stimulating to my little gray cells.
I talked so much my throat started to fail me. I have to stop spending my life connected to my laptop and get out more!
