Mother's Day Blues

May 5, 2009
Everyone knows that Sunday is Mother's Day and if you don't, you'd better run, not walk to the nearest Hallmark store.  My favorite gift was from #1 son, Keith, who bought me Night of the Living Dead (yes, a zombie movie).  When I asked him why, he said, "Mom, it says right on the box...'This is a classic.'"  And, not to be outdown, #2 son, Andrew took me to the movies when he was 14 to see Bad Boys with Will Smith.  They swore more in that movie than most authors and Andrew kept saying, "I'm sure they'll stop soon."  I, of course, just gave him the mother look.

So, I was saddened to read that gift giving for Mother's Day is down 14.7%.  Say it ain't so!  But, according to IBIS World, "It is all about discounts and downgrades this Mother's Day."

Books and CDs 4% really?  You know what this tells me?  It says that most people don't listen their mothers.  I know my boys don't.  Andrew called the other day to tell me that he was giving me The Matrix for Mother's Day.  I told him I didn't want it (I've already seen the movie a kazillion times).  "But it's a classic," he tells me.

Granted that there's not many books I buy anymore because I get most of the one's I like so I can write about them, but there are always some special ones I'd like to pick up and a gift certificate would be perfect.  I'm afraid to tell them I like something from a book store.  I know I'd get Watchman because I've never read it, even though I did try.

Well, I say, make mom a card yourself, pick some flowers from the garden (yours or someone elses), find some antique jewelry at a rummage sale, pamper her by cleaning her house, running some errands, grocery shopping, and for your outing, take her to the book store of your choice and stay next to her as she browses what she likes.  Laugh at the covers, talk about her childhood mother's days, have coffee in the store as you look through books, check out the electronic readers, book lights and other gadgets there.  Then either buy her something there or buy her a gift certificate for her next visit.

So, what about you?  Are you expecting the usual this Mother's Day...Free breakfast at Mc Donalds?  Do you really need those gorgeous flowers that will be dead in a week?  And how much bling can a mom be expected to wear (I still have the most awful pin that Keith got me one year that I still wear every chance I get.)

Bottom Line:
The best gift you can give your mother is the gift of your time.  I know it's my favorite gift.

Very Bottom Line:  Happy Birthday to Keith...my baby turns 37 today. <sniff>

Actually, my kids are more of the phone call variety  but my s.o. gives me the <strong>best</strong> gifts for Mother's Day: power tools and books  What can I say? He knows me quite well.

I hope you continue feeling better every day, Ms Vey

I'm guessing my teen will give me her usual coupon for a service around the house. My oldest will probably buy a gift that she put some thought into and package it very nicely. The rest will be glad to join their father in his offer to take me to dinner at a local restaurant. They are all sweet, but predictable.

I mailed my mom a card, and I'll absolutely give her a call (especially since her birthday is the same weekend). But I'm broke and live in NY, while she's in Texas, so no gift. I'm a bad daughter.

Thanks Barb for the reminder, but with my Mom in the early stages of dementia, she is not real clear about the calendar. However we will not neglect/forget her on this wonderful day to honor her & other Mothers! Happy Birthday Keith!

My family rule is that if you aren't in town for the day (birthday, Mother's Day, whatever), you're only required to send a card. (This is helpful for me, as I live 800 miles away from my family.) So according to my family, Cassie is a great daughter!!

Once my kids graduated from homemade gifts they tuned into "spa days" for moi... can't complain when I get a massage and a mani / pedi now can I?

For my own mom we're going to totally knock her socks off when we roll up with our local HOG chapter to deliver flowers Sunday morning - it's a great offering that the LOH members of the chapter put together. It's just shocking enough in her corner of surburbia to really thrill her. Might even put me back in the will :)

Hoping to receive car wash gift certificates. Yay!

A handmade card would be great, but my baby is 19 and way too techy for that.

Cassie, I'd take a call from my kids any day of the week. Your mother is blessed to have you!

My sons usually call me- although this year we'll be travelling so they might miss us.
My d-in-l always sends me flowers- sweet and thoughtful of her, I've just sent her a package of nice bath smelly stuff for Mother's Day.
It's hardly surprising to see retail spending down- given current circumstances - but that doesn't mean gift giving is less or the day less important.. some of the best gifts aren't bought.

My brothers and I cook Mother's Day dinner (and yes clean up afterwards too). The hard part is getting my Mum to do nothing. She feels funny watching us scurry and cook for her. So most times while a couple of us are in the kitchen the others are sitting/talking with her keeping her away! p.s. Barbara I can't believe you have a 37 year old! Happy Birthday to him!

Just being able to see my kids and grandkids on Mother's Day will be gift enough for me. My grandson was supposed to go to bootcamp with the Marines yesterday, but they delayed his departure for two weeks. So he'll be here for Mother's Day.

I'm still on the giving end for Mother's Day, and my sister and I have been planning a joint gift of things that we're helping create. I won't say it here, just in case she googles me before Sunday. *waves at Mom*

Since everyone in my family lives in far off states, we usually have a round robin calling. I'm sure that I'll hear from all my children. And I'll make sure I call my mom and chat a while.
