Has it really been 30 years?
August 16, 2007

I am trying to come to grips with the fact that it has been 30 years since Elvis has died.  It just doesn't seem possible.  My kids, nieces, nephews and most fast food workers weren't even born yet when he died.   The only Elvis most have been exposed to is the bloated, bejeweled, white jumpsuited singer from Vegas with the bushy mutton chops.  How sad for them.

While growing up, my brothers, sisters and I would go to the old National Theater every Sunday afternoon for the double features.  Mom would give us each 50 cents (a quarter for the ticket and a quarter to spend on unbuttered popcorn, 10 cents and a box of lemon drops 15 cents...yummmm).  The longest lines were the days when an Elvis movie was playing.  My favorite was GI Blues.  Elvis in uniform was so cool (the term hot wasn't used then, but would have applied).  The story took place in Germany and I wanted to be Juliet Prowse.

Next favorite was Blue Hawaii.  Elvis...on a beach...blue skies....bluer water and Rock a Hula, baby!

Lisa Marie Presley was being interviewed by Diane Sawyer in Graceland today.  They went into a vaulted room that was temperature controlled and they had to wear white gloves.  Elvis' wallet held pictures of him and LM as a baby.  Then they showed a scarf that had a message on it written from father to daughter.  LM had never seen it before and immediately said she was taking it to have it framed.  (Yeah, the tears really started flowing then...mine, not hers).

But here's my link to women's fiction.   Years ago I saw a tearjerker about a young girl, dying of an incurable disease, who wrote a fan letter to Elvis.  He wrote back and they became penpals.  I think it was a book first, but I'm totally brain dead on this.  Help!!  Do you remember this movie or book??

I'm giving away a book for the correct answer...put me out of my misery (I HATE FORGETTING STUFF!!)

Bottom line:  There will always be only one King of Rock and Roll.

I can't help with naming your tear-jerker, but you've got me heading to my favorite library's DVD collection to pick up some of the King's movies that I know are there. Hope there's a rainy day soon...

Could it be Touched by Love, from 1980? It's based on a story by Lena Canada called "To Elvis with Love."

I believe Jessica nailed it. With Diane Lane. The girl had cerebral palsy, I think. Absolutely a three-hankie tearjerker. Barbara, I'd go to the matinees on Saturday afternoons, and tended to go for the Junior Mints with my popcorn. Or Flicks. (Wasn't that what those chocolate pieces in the colored foil cardboard tubes were called?)

Elvis could have had no idea how truly great he was. Just imagine if he had been as brainy and wise as he was handsome and he could have ruled the world. People say that knowledge is power but they forgot about the power of beauty. It is his looks and his forever child-like innocence that attract people to him. Remembering those times is painful for me so that I avoid anything Elvis. People outside the South didn't like him.

You are so right. Touched by Love was the movie. I remember it being a a pretty good flick. Elvis really wasn't in it. It was more about a sick girl, her nurse and how becoming Elvis' penpal changed the girl's outlook on life. Congratulations Jessica! Send me your address and I'll mail off a book to you. barbaravey@yahoo.com ......................................... Barbara, I live in Wisconsin and we loved Elvis up here.

Yay for Jessica! People in Oregon loved Elvis. At least all the ones I knew. My mother played his songs all the time when I was a little girl. Over and over. All day long. When I hit my teens, I understood why. LOL A writer friend sent me a link a couple years ago to an Elvis christmas song/video online. I was so moved I went to itunes and bought an album. What surprised me was that his image and those movies had become so huge, I'd forgotten how fabulously he could sing. Having made the pilgrimage to Graceland nine years ago for/with my sweetie, I have to say he sure sang a lot better than he decorated!

Joanne, I have to agree. Nobody does Christmas songs like Elvis. I have the CDs and start playing them the day after Thanksgiving. I love songs I can sing along with.

Barb...don't even get me started on Elvis, lol...I live near Tupelo, MS (work there, actually) and that is his birthplace. Last week, all week long, the town was hopping with tourists who were coming by to see the home in which he was born and to visit Tupelo Hardware Store, which is where he purchased his first guitar. People will actually have their pictures taken against the brick wall of the building and stop traffic with all of the buses, lol....I don't know, Elvis died a week before I was born. And he was buried on my mother's birthday. I do like most of his music, but I must say, I don't get the fanfare that is there. Some people are REALLY emotional when it comes to Elvis!!!!

Good morning Barb! I watched Elvis specials/movies all day long Friday, so neglected my reading--I'll keep in touch with that. Just wanted to thank you for the "Elvis" tribute--so nice to see those photos!
