Impromptu Survey/Results: Who's where?

May 14, 2009
Last week I Twittered an Impromtu Survey to try to get a handle on who goes where.  I asked Twitterites, "Are you a reader?, an author?  an author who reads?  or, I never read a book.  Then I posted it on the BHB blog and MySpace and Facebook.  Here's the results I got:

Site Reader Author Both/Author&Reader
Twitter        37        0        40
PW Blog        17        0        25
Facebook         0        0          5
MySpace         0        0           5

Just a couple of things to keep in mind, not everyone posts a comment and I have no idea how they figure so many comments equals so many readers with the same view.  My Twitter automatically updates Facebook, so if someone follows each place, they only post one.  Not everyone reads every blog the same day.  Some people just sent me emails.

My Statistics:  Twitter followers   1,870
                          Facebook               1,490
                          MySpace                1,749
                          BHB Blog               ????

What does this mean? Well, to me, Twitters like to talk.  It's quick and easy and instant gratification.  Readers and authors are about equal in numbers there.  PW blog, more authors, but readers catching on, plus I think a lot of readers are still a little shy about commenting on an industry site (based on the emails I've received).  Facebook and Twitter work together, so I'd lump their numbers together.  MySpace is on it's last leg.  (Again, only based on my observations and conversations with others).

COMMENTS??

Now, tell me what you are seeing on your blog?  More readers...authors?  Is your blog reader or author driven?   Who's your target audience?  Where do you get the most results? And as a reader, do you feel comfortable posting comments?

Problems posting:  Send comments to barbaravey@gmail.com and I'll try to get it in for you.

Bottom Line:  One thing is obvious...all authors appear to be avid readers and I love it!

I'm a reader and love to comment, plus I really enjoy reading the insights into authors. I buy a lot of books and it's fun to know little things that maybe others don't.

I have a blog targeted to readers, but I get lots of authors too - becuase authors love to read! (when they have time). I've still trying to build the traffic to this new site, so I'll let you know when something I do make a big impact. :)

My blog is targeted mainly to readers -- it's meant to be a pleasure to read. And I know many of the people who read it are "just" readers. But, because I'm a writer, I know and interact with many writers, so many of them also check in.

I started out life as a reader and I think it will always be one of the pillars of my life. Writing came later for me.

I answered you on one and not the other, though I can't remember which. I was a on a binge this week, and read three books. It was lovely. Before I started writIng, I read a book a day. I miss that.

I'm a reader with no writing ambitions, and while I don't have a personal blog, I do contribute to one that is geared towards readers.

The interesting thing is that quite a few authors both read and comment there--which I think bears the fact that most authors are first and foremost readers themselves.

I don't usually feel shy about commenting on a blog or board, regardless of its nature. I do tend to read it for a few days first, though, to get a feel of the dynamics and tone; I think it's rude to burst in without knowing what is acceptable behaviour, you know?

I have to add to my comment an interesting note. My mom -- a reader -- sometimes comments on my blog. She just mentioned that she sometimes hesitates because she feels her comments aren't as witty as those from my "writer friends." I told her she holds her own just fine. Still -- interesting syndrome.

I think MySpace just has a different crowd. I know a lot of musicians and theater people who have been using MySpace as their primary tool for reaching their fans for years. I don't think it ever hit as strongly with writers (though I could be wrong).

My blog www.strongwomenbravestories.blogspot.com
is slanted toward readers since it features --you guessed it--stories of strong women.
And it's relatively new too. Most of my followers are readers.
But they might be closet writers--who's to know! GRIN

My blog is targeted towards those with the same interests as me, mainly books, but I also blog about movies, music, etc.

I read a lot of blogs, and like to comment when I can contribute to the topic of the blog post. Sometimes I get tongued as to what I want to say, but for the most part I'm pretty comfortable commenting. But I will say when I first started following blogs, I was a lurker for about a month or so before I left my first comment. I was a bit shy. :)

On my Amazon blog, I review books.

On my Red Room blog, I write on various craft/industry topics mostly of interest to writers.

On the Teen Fiction Cafe blog, where I'm one of 13 contributing YA authors, we write for the readers.
