Your Turn 12
August 31, 2007

First of all, did you notice that it is official?  Yes, the blog officially has it's new name...Beyond Her Book.  I like it.  It's catchy, it has a good beat and you can dance to it (sorry, flashbacks of American Bandstand because I'm listening to Louis, Louis by The Kingsmen...look it up on Wikipedia if you're too young to get it).  I've been  manually correcting my business cards all night and I've got writer's cramp.  Have you noticed a pattern here?  Whine, whine, whine when I should have been thinking wine, wine, wine.

But the good news is that it's Friday and time for me to unload my book of the week.  The Rest Falls Away by Colleen Gleason is the first in the Gardella Vampire Chronicles series that takes place in 19th century London and Victoria is about to make her debut.  Phillip, the Marquess of Rockley turns out to be a friend from her youth and the matchmaking begins.  But judging from the hidden stake on the book cover, there is a little more to this story.  It was fun to read of Victoria decorating her stakes to match her ball gowns and the interesting ways she disguises them.  The mythology behind the legacy is intriging and there is a twist at the end that I didn't see coming, so after you read it, let me know what you think.

In the car I'm listening to Ghost Hunter by Jayne Castle (aka Jayne Ann Krentz), a paranormal tale that matches up Guild Boss and extraordinary ghost hunter Cooper Boone with botanist Elly St. Clair.  When Elly's friend disappears in the catacombs beneath the city, Cooper helps her battle the deadly energy ghosts that have take up residence there.  My favorite part is  Elly's loyal pet dust bunny (I have lots of these pets in my house, but I question their loyalty).

On my iPod I have 24 Hours by Greg Iles.  A family with a 5 year old daughter is terrorized by a psycho and his crazy band of followers.  This was made into a movie with Kevin Bacon (who I love), but read the book instead.  Greg's books always cause me to have heart palps and are extremely hard to put down, so start them when you have time to read a good chunk, oh and avoid caffeine, you won't need it.

So, there's my take on the week.  What have you been reading?

Bottom line:  Next week I'm reading light and fluffy...just like my dust bunnies.

Ah, but if you'd had "wine, wine, wine" imagine how your business cards would look! Reading: finishing up Suzanne Brockmann's "Force of Nature" and yes, I skimmed ahead to read the ending because I couldn't wait to learn how the romances worked out. Then it's on to Sarah Monette's "The Mirador," the third in her fantastic fantasy series about wizards--very adult wizards, not the Harry Potter sort. Anyone who enjoys Ellen Kushner's books should check out Monette too.

I just read the cutest book, My Heart May Be Broken, but My Hair Still Looks Great by Dixie Cash. It's about a young woman who'd father makes her get a job on a horse farm. The cover of this book sold me.

My mom recommended The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy. It's a crime thriller based upon Elizabeth Short's brutal murder in a vacant lot in 1947 Hollywood. This case was never solved but the book is scarily fascinating.

Pass the wine! :) Currently reading Drop Dead Gorgeous by Linda Howard. Hilarity along with the suspense. On the ipod: Angel Falls by Kristin Hannah. I'm sooo tempted to 'skim' to the end on this one. After all this angst, there had better be an HEA!! Shari www.sharianton.com

I have read Ghost Hunter and 24 Hours, so I feel like I'm ahead of the game. I'll have to pick up The Rest Fall Away. Right now I'm reading What a Lady Wants by Victoria Alexander. It's historical romance at it's best. Great fun to read.

I'm reading the second book of the Warlands trilogy by Elizabeth Vaughan, www.warprize.com. In an imaginary world, there is action and romance. I like them.

I finished reading Fern Michaels' Up Close and Personal last night...good read. I am listening to Nicholas Sparks' Three Weeks With My Brother. I missed reading this when it came out and I just can't turn the MP3 player off! This is great, but then I have loved every book he has put out. I am starting to read Sandra Browns' Play Dirty now.

I finished Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen. Loved it! Anyone who likes Alice Hoffman ought to try this magical book. Also finished Road Kills by Zoe Sharp, a transition piece between her two thrillers set in the U.S., First Drop and Second Shot. Try Zoe Sharp if you like Lee Child's Jack Reacher.

I just finished In My Wild Dream by Sasha Lord. This is part of her Wild series and I just love the historical/romance/fantasy of it all. A breath of fresh air.

Last week I read "Crazy Hot" by Tara Janzen. I don't know if you've tried her books yet Barb but if you haven't I suggest you add her to the list because I was totally blown away at how much I enjoyed it. I can't get into anything else since reading it and I'm only receiving the next two books in another weeks time and the wait is killing me. LOL. She is a fantastic author. Happy reading! Hello Barb! Wasn't the movie actor in "24 Hours" Keanu Reeves (not Kevin Bacon)? Or am I thinking of another movie where time was a factor with the star's young daughter? Thanks for the great suggestions for "reads"!

Kevin Bacon was indeed the bad guy in the movie called "Trapped" (book was 24 Hours). I think you're thinking of "Nick of Time" with Johnny Depp. His daughter is kidnapped to get Johnny to assassinate someone.
