Following Your Dream on Your Turn Friday

May 15, 2009
David Baldacci
Author David Baldacci

I have been reading like crazy between inputting all the new books into my data base (over 1200 now), starting a YA reading group (be sure to stop by tomorrow for their blurbs, they've been working very hard  on them), settting up library events, making reservations for hotels, planes and conferences.  Sounds like complaining?  Hardly.  I've never been happier.

Although I've heard stories of people finding new meaning in their lives in their later years, I never dreamed it would happen to me.  I'm doing things I never thought possible a few years ago and the ideas in my head now know no bounds.  To think that not long ago, I only left the house to go to the library to get more books.  Now, I'm the one passing out books, discovering new authors and readers.  And I can hardly explain the thrill of meeting some authors I have read for years and discovering they remember me now.

This happened just yesterday when David Baldacci wrote on his website:  "I got to meet one of my favorite authors for the first time, Douglas Clegg and hung out with my friend Barbara Vey who did these great “Drive By Videos”...  He went on to show the video (you can see it here).  Ok, maybe not a big deal for others, but for me, it was the icing on the cake that already sweetens my Candyland world.

follow your dreams
Which brings me back to you?  How old were you when you discovered your calling in life?  Or are you still waiting?  Were you surprised the direction you were sent in?  Is the feeling so strong that you only want to do that one thing all the time?  Do you just burst at the seams to share the joy you've found with others?  Is this why there are so many writers groups, reader groups and bloggers online?

While you're contemplating all those esoteric questions, don't forget that it's Your Turn Friday.  Please comment on what you've been reading lately.   According to my emails, people keep lists of the books you mention, along with the WW Ladies blurbs and now the YA readers from Saturday.

Bottom Line:  I don't know about you, but everytime I find a convert, I feel I changed someone's life just a little bit for the better.

I discovered my love of reading when I was in grade school and over the years realized, I want to write my own stories. I didn't act on that desire for twenty years due to poor self esteem as well as financial responsibilities and family. Now I am persuing my dream by writing and taking classes on writing. :)

I am currently reading an ARC that I won from Yasmine Galenorn's website. I am reading her next book due out in June called Demon Mistress. I must say it is one heck of a ride so far and I am in the throes of the adventure!!

After 20 years of resistance I've finally signed up for Nursing School. I'm starting this summer with only one class but I'm extremely excited! I'm currently reading Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward.

Hi Barbara, caught your tweet on this topic. I never planned to be an author, having been an avid reader from childhood. As an author since 2002, I'm now feeling comfortable with this direction, kind of like finding my stride. I'm excited about what the future holds for me.

'Morning. I'm listening to Devil May Cry by Sherrilyn Kenyon, and I've got several other books going, Karen Chance, Mona Risk, Maddie James. I never used to do that; it was always one book at a time. Love my books.

I am already living some of my dreams... stay-at-home mom with a successful at-home business; and being able to go and help out at school and work around my husband's schedule. I get to read books thanks to Barbara. Partial Nirvana for me. Now for trips around the world....

I am currently reading Brandilyn Collins latest book and a paranormal romance to step out of my comfort zone. Stay tuned.

I'm super excited to hear from your YA reading group! As for a calling -- I guess I figured out in college that I was more interested in science fiction than science, and it's all been a single path from there!

Hey Barbara, I think I have decided that I want to be you when I grow up. I started reading in kindergarten and have been at it every since. I have been working on a book for the last few years, but I will probably never finish it. I decided to go back to school in January so have been busy. This week I read Lara Adrian- Midnight series, re-read Dream Warrior- Sherrilynn Kenyon, and I finished James Patterson- Maximum Ride series.

I've had the pleasure of reading all three of Christine Feehan's Leopard Series books, the third one, Wild Rain just came out a couple of weeks ago. I also just finished Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward early this morning. I SO enjoyed all of these books, I was glued to them. Fantastic reads.

Well I'm reading a biography of Lady Jane Parker-Boleyn also known as Lady Rochford by Julia Fox on my Kindle. Also started reading Bad to The Bone by Jeri-Smith Ready, I've also read a book that you posted a video for called Treasured by Crystal Jordan and it was great. I really do enjoy pirate novels.

Barbara, After a life-long love of reading, I decided to start writing myself when my daughter was 2 years old. She's now nine. One thing I hope to pass along to her is that dreams make life worthwhile! Mine is a lot of fun, but hard work as well. And I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I just finished Lover Avenged also. Great book!

How cool to be hanging out with David Baldacci -- and for him to mention it on his website! I knew I wanted to write when I was 36. This week I read two great books: To Beguile A Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt and He Calls Her Doc by Mary Brady.

I started reading before I started school (one of the good things about being the youngest of five), but I have found a different level of enjoyment since I started writing reviews just last year.

Erm... I don't have any book recommendations right now, apologies.

Have a good weekend, everyone!

Just a quick comment, Barbara--I am reading Edna Buchanan's novel: "Legally Dead". What a thriller--I can't put it down!
