Isn't it Romantic?
November 13, 2007

By now you've all probably heard about the young man who saw the girl of his dreams while riding the subway in New York.  Patrick Moberg, 21, said it was "love at first sight" when he looked across the crowded subway car and saw the young woman writing in her journal.  Because the train was so full, he soon lost her in the crowd, but he rushed home to set up a website to find her (BTW, he is a web designer).

He posted a picture of his mystery girl that he drew including a red flower in her hair.  Patrick added his cell phone number, e-mail address and asked for help to find her.

In a matter of hours he received a ton of e-mails and phone calls.  He even got offers from women who weren't the one he was seeking but said, "...you're so adorable, pick me instead."

Then a friend of the woman sent him a picture and he posted a notice on his website that said, "Found Her! Seriously!"

Now Patrick wants to woo her in private saying, "In our best interest, there will be no more updates to this website."  And he's done doing interviews.

"Unlike all the romantic comedies and bad pop songs, you'll have to make up your own ending for this," he said.

What a great book this would make.  Has anyone written this story yet...or one like it.  Does it need a villian?  An incurable disease?  An abusive boyfriend?  A nuclear bomb waiting to be defused?

Bottom Line:  Well, I've made up my ending....they lived "Happily Ever After."

I think it just needs to be a novella and skip the bomb/disease/butthead beater/etc. ;)

Barbara, this reminds me of an anthology I did called NO LAW AGAINST LOVE. Each story had a silly, outdated law. The challenge to the writer was take the silly law and have that be what brings hero and heroine together, the object being, romance can happen in the strangest circumstances. The subway romance just goes back to Mario Lanza singing...Some enchanted evening.....

I did read about this and thought it was adorable and gutsy. Can you imagine posting your cell phone number on the internet? In this day and age that's just asking for trouble. But I really hope they do find their happily ever after. Maybe in a year or so someone can do a follow-up to find out where they both are.

It's so Sweet! But I'm curious as to how he got his webpage seen "out there"...how was it made visible to those gazillion people? I mean, it can't be one of those cases where "if you build it, they will come." A person has to know it's out there in the first place. Anyway, it's a lovely story and it doesn't need one more thing, even a follow up. I like how you wrote the ending, Barb.

Drat! I did not read about this. Plus, I think he took the website down :( This is great story and I wish them "Happily Ever After". It's great that people were willing to help him out.

I like that he includes "not insane" in his description of himself. I wonder what his ex-girlfriend thinks...

For my money it needs a non-abusive perfectly nice boyfriend, to make the situation bittersweet and build some real suspense about which she'll choose. (In a book -- I wouldn't wish any complications on them in real life.) For a title, I suggest "Meet Cute".

A very similar story has already been published, made into a movie, and a TV series - in Japan! Densha Otoko (Train Man). Del Rey has a one-volume manga and the original novel; Viz and CMX each have 3-volume manga, and Viz has distributed the live-action movie.

Kat Kan, thanks for the heads up. I guess this is just another example of life imitating art.

I have a short story about a couple who meet on the bus. It doesn't end as well as I hope their story ends... but I tend a little toward the macabre... so...

It reminded me of the Gene Kelly movie On the Town, which has the plot motivating his character about "Miss Turnstiles." (I think it's that one, and not American in Paris.) I'm so glad he was able to track her down! Now I just hope their personalities mesh as much as the "spark" they had on the train.

I actually know a couple who met sort of like this. (He saw her, was too shy to speak, thought about her constantly - but then he saw her again on the subway and approached her. They're still married.) I hope this one works out as well! Though there's something a little scary about a guy who will decide you're "it" just from a quick glance at you... well, here's hoping!

It'd be a fun novel if she turned out to be a spy and all of the attention on her threatened to blow her cover.

Hello Barb! Maybe I'm just too cynical & suspicious from my career choice, but I think this borders on "stalking"--kind of gives me the creeps--like guys who see a woman at a stoplight & use their contacts to run her plate & call her for a date! Sorry to be the only negative comment on this meeting!

This is confirmation that the internet is amazing! LOL... So sad that we don't know the ending but I hope that in a few years he posts again and says they're married and having a baby. LOL... All the best to them.

I think it's kinda sweet--especially since it didn't happen to me. If I'd been tracked down like that, I'd probably lean toward the "creepy stalker" side...
