Moonlight and Magnolias: CNN and Romance

October 1, 2009
Debbie Kaufmann, Barbara Vey and Sandy Elzie at the CNN News desk

Going to the airport at 4:30 in the morning is no picnic, but arriving in Atlanta early enough to have a full day in the city is priceless.

I was met at the airport by authors Sandy Elzie and Debbie Kaufmann who took me to the Thumbs Up restaurant for breakfast.  Because I never went to sleep last night, I opted for the smoked turkey Ruben with cole slaw on it.  Perfect choice.  Sandy and Debbie couldn’t resist the fresh raspberry french toast with whipped cream.  After stuffing ourselves, we were off to a tour of CNN.  It is huge!  I had no idea.  It was like a mall with a food court and shops and, oh yeah, a news center.

Stephanie, our wonderful CNN Tour Guide

We missed the VIP tour by 10 minutes which would have taken us on the actual news floor, but we had to settle for looking through glass one floor up.  It was an amazing tour and we saw the actual telecast of CNN, Headline News and the Spanish CNN.  Our tour guide was exceptional.

Ashley Williams knows her romance

While there, we stopped in the Walden Book store.  After my bad experience with Barnes and Noble last week, I wanted to see what Waldens's did with romance.     showed us the section with a separate new releases wall.  She was extremely knowledgable about the genre and was excited to tell us all about the new books out.  Very refreshing.

Had dinner with some of GRAN (Georgia Romance Authors Network) members at J Alexanders which was wonderful.  Everyone shared where they were in the writing process and author Haywood Smith shared some horror stories from her experiences at eHarmony.  I'm sure we'll see them turning up in a book of her's.

Finally got back to the room and it was after 11 p.m. before I started on the blog only to find out that the time period for internet access in the room is from 3 p.m. until the following 3 p.m.  Since I felt I should get the full 24 hours for my money, I approached the front desk with my concerns and was greeted by Scott Steagall and Lynne Verhosek (of the Hilton Atlanta Northeast) who agreed with my point of view and offered free access for me.  Now that's customer service at it's finest.

Bottom Line:  The conference hasn't even started yet and I'm tired out, but I love Atlanta and am just sorry I don't have a chance to catch a baseball game while I'm here.

Wow! I'm in a photo on Barbara Vey's blog. How cool is that?? Thanks for coming to dinner with us last night, Barbara. Great fun!

I've lived in Atlanta for a loooong time and haven't yet visited CNN. Must remedy that.

Can't wait for Your Turn Friday... Nothing's more fun than talking up whatever I'm reading.

Hi Barbara,

What a fun time we all had with you! Yes, breakfast was yummy and CNN was interesting, but it didn't hold a candle to the fun lady we got to spend time with.

Can't wait until your next visit...I'll volunteer for VIP airport duty again!

Sandy Elzie
