News and Notes for Monday

November 24, 2008
Andrew Bernier and Barbara Vey
Andrew and me seeing Twilight. Andrew held the iPhone and took the picture just to bug me (he always looks good on pictures, while I look like I spent a month on Survivor).

Well, Andrew and I finally saw Twilight Sunday afternoon. There was a pretty good mix of people in the theater, but I could hear the teens giggling and explaining to a friend that Twilight isn't as scary as Harry Potter. I haven't read the books, yet, but I do plan to some day. The movie was beautifully filmed and I could feel the anguish of being the new kid at school, high school drama and the uncertainty of young love. Of course, the vampire angle kind of kicks it up a notch.

I guess I expected more action, but I wasn't disappointed, I think I'm more anxious to see what happens next. Andrew, on the other hand, was frustrated with the dialog. He said he felt kids didn't really talk that way (he's 26 and a high school teacher), but he will be seeing it again with his girlfriend because he's sure she'll love it, even though Johnny Depp isn't in it. Those of you who read the book and saw the movie, how did you feel it translated? Should I have read the book first? Did you like it and would you recommend it?

But it is Monday and here's the news I heard this past week:

Walleye Madness at MidnightFrom Annette Fitzgerald of The Book Exchange:
New Year's Eve in Port Clinton, OH we have a large festival called the Walleye Drop, literally thousands attend this. Our new store location is right in the middle of this festival. We will be working closely with the local businesses and will have a large quantity of gift baskets that will be given away throughout the night. If you are interested in donating some promo material (print books, key chains, emery boards, pens, magnets, specialty promo items, etc) feel free to send them to us. Please send no more than 20 items, we aren't looking for bookmarks or business cards at this time as we have quite a bit of these already and will throw some into each basket. Please have these to us no later than Dec 15, so we'll have enough time to get the baskets together. We are accepting all Genre's so feel free to spread the message. (Ok, I had to include this just because the idea of a Walleye Drop cracks me up.)

Moonquest by Mark David Gerson

From author Mark David Gerson: Moonquest won the New Mexico statewide book award for best fantasy/science fiction. It will be featured in special displays in bookstores and libraries across the state, including in all New Mexico Borders outlets. This is the 5th award for Moonquest (Congratulations Mark David!)

Samhain Publishing
From Angela James, Executive Editor, Samhain Publishing: BooksOnBoard, the premier ebook retailer, has entered into definitive agreements with Samhain Publishing LTD. and Lexcycle, Inc. to make the entire Samin romantic fiction catalog of ebooks available on Lexcycle's Stanza. Stanza is the hightest rated and most popular ebook reader for the iPhone and iPod Touch. "This provides a giant step forward for many of our customers," said Bob LiVolsi, BooksOnBoard CEO, "Now, our readers will be able to buy, download wirelessly and read ebooks from Samhain's best selling authors such as Lora Leigh, Jess Dee and Lorelei James from their iPhones." (I have an iPhone and love the Stanza.)

Afterlife by Douglas Clegg

From author Doug Clegg:
I invite you to enjoy my novel, Afterlife--for free. More than 14,000 readers online have been enjoying this special Halloween treat so far. (A free book, right at your fingertips, the price is right)

Marjorie M. LiuFrom author Marjorie M. Liu The very talented and prolific Adam Minter is an American journalist based in Shanghai, whose work has been published in The Atlantic Monthly, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, and many other prestigious publications (though he hardly likes to brag). He blogs daily over at Shanghai Scrap, where -- much to my delight -- he has posted an interview with me about writing in China. Take a gander, and while you're there check out the rest of his blog, which is one of the most balanced, informative, and entertaining resources about China that I've had the pleasure to read. (According to Marjorie, the sci-fi market is huge in China, so all you writers find a way to get your stuff over there!)

If you have any news, kudos, special announcements, free online books, events for charity, or anything interesting or out of the ordinary, you can email me at barbaravey@gmail.com

Bottom Line: I can remember being a teenager when West Side Story came out and how it affected me (same basic theme, high school drama, the anguish of forbidden young love...but with singing and dancing). And I wonder if Twilight does that for the teens of today.

Did you see Twilight?
Loved it!
It was ok, but the book was much better.
Not yet, but I will eventually see it.
No. I only read the books.
No, I hate vampires.

I would definitely recommend this movie. I think it's a pretty faith adaptation and for those who didn't think it was scary enough - it wasn't supposed to be. For some reason, everyone thinks horror and scary when they think vampire and that is not the case here. You must remember that this is about the feelings between Edward and Bella and - oh, yeah, Bella was never afraid of Edward. Even if you haven't read the book, see the movie. Then read the book.

Oh, you beat me to the Walleye drop! Oh, well, by the time I blog on it just before New Years, maybe it'll be "new" again. LOL I just today promised Netti that I'm sending her some Shattered dark chocolate bars and backlist books for her baskets for the gala Walleye event.

As for vampires, I used to devour them like chocolate truffles back in the '90s when guys were writing them as horror (and the glut got even bigger than it is now), but I'm afraid King's Salem's Lot pretty much ruined the genre for me because I've never read one that, for me, anyway, topped it. Which is why I was thinking about downloading it for my Kindle last night.

I gotta say, I heart that thing to pieces, but it does make indulging my book addiction way too easy! I downloaded Tess Gerritson's new one from bed at one this morning after finishing up the book I was reading. Never mind that I already have about 20 books and way more sample chapters on it. At least, I tell myself, I'm not killing trees, and by using my Amazon visa card for just about everything, I have lots of credits to use in the Kindle store.

But as usual, I digress. . . As for Twilight, I think the reason girls love the series is for the same reason adult readers glom onto Vampire books -- the guy's the ultimate tortured hero who's both alpha and bad boy, which is a pretty unbeatable fantasy combination. Glad you enjoyed the movie. Have a super week!

The Walleye drop sounds like fun! I won't see Twilight. I will see Australia this weekend, with Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman. That's my kind of movie.

I saw Twilight and I loved it. I thought it was true to the book, even though they ramped up the romance somewhat. But they had to for time purposes. Loved the intensity of it and thought it was well cast. Can't wait for the next installment. I came home all geared up to read the last installment and realized I'd purchased another copy of New Moon instead. So off to Borders tomorrow for the next book.

The Walleye Drop is an amazing event in downtown Port Clinton. Children and adults of all ages come to ring in the New Year with food, entertainment, activities, fireworks, and fun. There are many fun-filled activities for children including the kids fishing derby, arts projects, lucky ducky, Touch a Touch, and the extremely popular Kids Drop. The Kids Drop is the perfect way for your little children to celebrate an early midnight celebration. Children and their families pack the heated tent to watch the stuffed walleye come down at 6pm.
The Walleye Drop brings many people to our small lake-front community. It is a super busy day and night for our downtown businesses.
We hope to see you at the Walleye Drop on NYE!

I've read Twilight and loved it. I haven't seen the movie yet as it isn't out in the UK until December. We always get everything late....Paranormal romance hasn't even caught on over here yet. I can never understand why programs like Buffy and Charmed are so popular over here but paranormal romance hasn't got much of a following.

I agree with the reader above who said that if you haven't read the book you should see the movie first. I thought the movie was more true to the story than any other book-to-movie I know of. With that being said, the book is better than the movie - especially if you enjoy being caught up in a head-over-heals emotional ride.
