News and Notes for MondayNovember 24, 2008
Well, Andrew and I finally saw Twilight Sunday afternoon. There was a pretty good mix of people in the theater, but I could hear the teens giggling and explaining to a friend that Twilight isn't as scary as Harry Potter. I haven't read the books, yet, but I do plan to some day. The movie was beautifully filmed and I could feel the anguish of being the new kid at school, high school drama and the uncertainty of young love. Of course, the vampire angle kind of kicks it up a notch. I guess I expected more action, but I wasn't disappointed, I think I'm more anxious to see what happens next. Andrew, on the other hand, was frustrated with the dialog. He said he felt kids didn't really talk that way (he's 26 and a high school teacher), but he will be seeing it again with his girlfriend because he's sure she'll love it, even though Johnny Depp isn't in it. Those of you who read the book and saw the movie, how did you feel it translated? Should I have read the book first? Did you like it and would you recommend it? But it is Monday and here's the news I heard this past week:  From Annette Fitzgerald of The Book Exchange: New Year's Eve in Port Clinton, OH we have a large festival called the Walleye Drop, literally thousands attend this. And I wonder if Twilight does that for the teens of today. In response to: News and Notes for Monday Margay commented: I would definitely recommend this movie. I think it's a pretty faith adaptation and for those who didn't think it was scary enough - it wasn't supposed to be. For some reason, everyone thinks horror and scary when they think vampire and that is not the case here. You must remember that this is about the feelings between Edward and Bella and - oh, yeah, Bella was never afraid of Edward. Even if you haven't read the book, see the movie. Then read the book.

Haven't seen Twilight--I'm going to see Australia with my sister Wed. when it comes out & then Four Christmases with my mom (also coming out Wed.) since she loves comedies. I'll let you know!

In response to: News and Notes for Monday cindy holby commented: I saw Twilight and I loved it. I thought it was true to the book, even though they ramped up the romance somewhat. But they had to for time purposes. Loved the intensity of it and thought it was well cast. Can't wait for the next installment. I came home all geared up to read the last installment and realized I'd purchased another copy of New Moon instead. So off to Borders tomorrow for the next book.

Children and adults of all ages come to ring in the New Year with food, entertainment, activities, fireworks, and fun. There are many fun-filled activities for children including the kids fishing derby, arts projects, lucky ducky, Touch a Touch, and the extremely popular Kids Drop. The Kids Drop is the perfect way for your little children to celebrate an early midnight celebration. Children and their families pack the heated tent to watch the stuffed walleye come down at 6pm.

In response to: News and Notes for Monday Helen Taylor commented: I've read Twilight and loved it. I haven't seen the movie yet as it isn't out in the UK until December. We always get everything late....Paranormal romance hasn't even caught on over here yet. I can never understand why programs like Buffy and Charmed are so popular over here but paranormal romance hasn't got much of a following.

I thought the movie was more true to the story than any other book-to-movie I know of. With that being said, the book is better than the movie - especially if you enjoy being caught up in a head-over-heals emotional ride.
