Happy Anniversary to Me!
March 14, 2008

Welcome to the party!  I can't believe that one year ago today I wrote my first blog ever.  Thank goodness my son explained what a blog was or I still wouldn't have a clue.  Before I get into my year in review, let me tell you where everything is so you can grab some eats and drinks while reading this anniversary blog.

On the left is the martini bar...every flavor you could ever imagine.  On the right is the coffee bar with my favorite hazelnut capuccino, but you can order anything.  Along the back wall are the dips, chips, salsa and salty items.  And the centerpiece is a giant chocolate fountain with brownies, cakes, fruit, and even marshmallows to dip in the chocolate sauces.  Yummm.

Now that your plates and glasses are full, let me tell you about my first year as a cub blogger for PW.  My first question was, "Is there a how-to rule book?"  Of course, the answer was no, but I was told I could write about anything to do with women's fiction.  So I decided my first blog would be to define Women's Fiction and as I soon found out, there is no right or wrong answer.  Anything goes.  That pretty much sums up my definition of Beyond Her Book.  To me, women's fiction is anything I read.

Then I thought I'd try to appear professional by contacting local authors to interview (practice on was more like it).  Lori Handeland and Shari Anton immediately came to my aid, met me for coffee and spent hours talking to me as I asked the most boring, typical, stupid questions ever.  They made me feel comfortable in a world I didn't understand....publishing.  As a reader, I really didn't care about the publishing part as long as I got to read the books I loved.

Next I tried to fancy my pages up by adding pictures.  I didn't know how to size them or make the print go around them, so they all ended up at the bottom of the blog and some of them were huge.  When the opportunity came to attend RT (Romantic Times Booklover's Convention), PW thought it was a great idea.  Again, not knowing any better, I let RT pick who I would interview, so I spent hours sitting in a room and every half hour someone new would walk in and introduce themselves (I didn't have a clue who half of them were and apologized profusely).  Lucky for me, Jade Lee was first and put me at ease, gave me pointers and made me laugh.  It was easy after that.  At one point, I interviewed 3 at one time since they were all there anyway.  I had writer's cramp, but since their stories were all so unique, I couldn't stop (you all know who you are).

J.D. Robb and me

Then I got to go to RWA (Romance Writer's of America) and thought I died and went to heaven.  This is a reader's dream come true.  I was the ultimate gawker/stalker.  Suddenly, authors I had been reading for years were breakfasting with me (Linda Howard), sharing a Diet Coke (Suzanne Brockmann), playing with Transformer stickers (Marjorie Liu) and the most exciting, letting me interview them (J. D. Robb...ok, Nora Roberts, but I told her I'd rather talk to J. D. because I like her books better).  I listened to empassioned (Lisa Kleypas) and humorous (Lisa Jackson) speeches and attended the Red Carpet worthy Rita Awards.  Oh, and did I mention my major faux pas?  Standing up Sherrilyn Kenyon for 2 hours!  But she was very gracious after I explained that I had been having a lot of "senior moments" lately.

I was invited to the Moonlight and Magnolias conference in Atlanta and fell in love with the southern belles (especially Dianna Love Snell) who made the experience unforgettable by having a CIA assassin as a guest speaker (Roland Haas).  Next up was Sherrilyn Kenyon's K-Con in the magnificent city of New Orleans where I met the most remarkable fans.  (And the beignets were pretty good too)

Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer convincing me I'm a writer

I became a proud member of the MySpace community (thanks to Jennifer St. Giles) and am looking at 700 friends.  And don't even get me started on my accidental journey onto Facebook.  I learned about book trailers from Sheilia Clover English.  I snagged an interview with the dynamic writing duo of Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer who had me in stitches.  And Jennifer made me promise to stop saying I'm just a reader and admit that "I am a writer."  (Ok, I still struggle with that one, but Bob sent me a book and signed it "To a fellow writer."  I now have the book opened to that page and under glass.)

And along the way I did what I do best...read wonderful, entertaining and sometimes inspiring books that took me to far off places with some unforgettable characters that I can't seem to get enough of.  I met new and upcoming authors and some that have been around the block a few times, but were new to me.

In February, I branched out to the Love is Murder convention in Chicago.  Got to see a staged murder scene and interview the delightful Tess Gerritsen.  I also came home with a ton of book that I still need to read.

And what's new for the second year of Beyond Her Book?  Well, more conventions and interactions with  authors and readers starting with my great adventure to the Big Apple's Novelists Inc. conference in 2 weeks.  Then the Romantic Times Booklovers Convention in April where I'll be guest judge for Dorchester's Mr. Romance contest.  May I'll be in Green Bay, WI for the Wisconsin RWA and June off to Cincinnati for Lori Foster's Writer/Reader get-together.  July is the RWA in San Francisco and I'm hoping to keep my gawking/drooling to a minimum.  I'm working on some things for the fall and I'll let you know when it's all settled.

I know I didn't mention everything and everyone, but you all made an impression (good or bad) that help shape the blog and I wish I had room to name each and every one of you (maybe at next year's party).

So, yesterday I let a few authors and friends know that I'd be having a party today and asked them to help spread the word.  Well, they totally blew me away.  I should have known it was out of control after the emails started pouring in from authors, agents, publicists and publishers offering to help make this party a rousing success.  Over 75 authors/publishers have offered to send autographed books and other surprises to my guests here today.  And all you have to do is post a comment to be entered.  My mom will pick the winners tomorrow and I'll immediately post them on the blog.

(Get your complimentary tissues out, this is the mushy part)  My heartfelt thanks to all of you who have stuck by me in the past year through all my growing pains.  To my wonderful, supportive friends (new and some not so new), my family, adorable Andrew for teaching me that the internet is my friend (and his amazing BHB logo), darling Keith who gave me a laptop so I could travel and blog at the same time, brilliant Jennifer who reminded me that for years I told my sons they could do anything and now it was my turn to take my own advice.  And especially to my Mom, who never lost faith in me and instilled my deep and everlasting love of books.

Wait, it looks like your glass is empty.  Go get it refilled, stop at the chocolate fountain, visit with some of your friends and sign the guest book.  The entertainment is about to begin...dancing cabana boys.

Bottom Line:  Is it any wonder that I feel like the luckiest person in the world?  I'm doing something I love, with people I love, for people I love.  Cheers!!
