Weekly Book Blurbs

I've been hooked on the Riley Jensen books since reading the opening paragraphs of the first one. While it might be that hers was not the first of its kind out there, Keri Arthur's book was my initial exposure to "Urban Fantasy", and I was astonished by the dark, gritty flavor of the not-necessarily-happily-ever
-after. And I liked it. The Darkest Kiss continues the story with the same high degree of sensual intrigue.

This is the story of two sisters who share a secret that involved a boating accident with their mother. Years later the older sister is once more in a boating accident with her son. Now the son loses his voice. The younger sister returns to try to help.
While reading this book, I could feel the sand beneath my feet and it was so descriptive that I felt that I truly was in South Carolina. The emotional rollercoaster ride this story delivered makes me want to share this experience with everyone I meet.
Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews

Atlanta, GA is a very different place since the magic came a couple generations ago. Post-apocalyptic, the magic comes and goes unpredictably, and it's only when it's gone that technology works and there might be electricity for lights or phones or cars… The magic also brought out the creatures of imagination, like necromancers that control the undead, and the Pack, which is the community of were-beasts, and wielders of magic in the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, dedicated to protecting humanity.
Kate Daniels is now a reluctant Knight of the Order. Though she thinks her maternal instincts are nil, she takes on the task of caring for a child whose mother has vanished along with other women of a coven. It appears that the coven had been using magic and sacrifice to summon a deity, and Kate hastens to determine what god or goddess has been brought into the world and what kind of havoc he/she will wreak. When it appears the girl is being sought by horrible forerunners of the deity, Kate throws all her strength into protecting her.
Kate's world was introduced in Magic Bites. The characters, including Kate, are enticing enough that I want to keep track of them. As I approached the climax of this story, I found my muscles wound tightly in anxiety. Imaginative and thrilling, this is urban fantasy as it should be.
Dangerous Affairs by Kelle Z. Riley

Amanda Caruthers manages a health club, but has been running from an abusive relationship for years. Burton Campbell applies for a job teaching martial arts at the health club. Amanda feels Burt is too much like her ex-husband, but Burt is really just trying to make up for not saving his sister's death at an abuser's hand.
Three main characters in this book keep you reading, enjoying the story and make it seem real and frightening. Their problems and the unusual way they go about solving them makes for an exciting book.
This debut novel by author Kelle Z. Riley, is a book you would not want to miss.

"I know, it's only rock and roll, but I like it." I've been walking around singing that for the past two days in those moments I haven't been absorbed by this absorbing story about vampires, loyalty, and rock and roll. Incongruous? Not in this context.
No one believes it when the music radio station WVMP runs a promotion claiming their fabulous nighttime DJ's are vampires. They assert that each one knows best the music of the era in which he was turned, thereby able to compile the best programming of the Rock and Roll of his time. The promo idea was that of the new intern, Ciara Griffin, hired to raise ratings and advertising dollars so the the station won't be sold to a conglomerate that puts them all out of their livelihoods. Ciara's promotion is a flim-flam, however, because the ridiculous-seeming claim is true.
Wicked Game is the first in a new series by Jeri Smith-Ready, an urban fantasy with a music theme. The book is laced with titles, artists and lyrics, and it's obvious Jeri knows her stuff. Even a rock and roll ostrich like me (oblivious) can enjoy the sparks of recognition, as I did the story itself. When you set the book aside for a break, you will be singing something.
Bottom Line: Definition of a blurb: A brief advertisement or announcement, especially a laudatory one. Oh, great...now I have to look up "laudatory."
