If I Had My Life to Live Over
May 9, 2008

One of my favorite authors of all times is Erma Bombeck.  She made us face our everyday lives with humor.  It's always seemed to me that she could make even the most dire situations seem better somehow by offering a smile for a small reprieve.  Even the titles of her books crack me up, "The Grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank," "If Life is a Bowl of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits?" and "A Marriage Made in Heaven, Too Old for an Affair."

Right now my family is in a medical crisis with several members battling different diseases, so when someone sent me this piece by Erma, written after she found out she had a fatal disease, it made me think ... and smile.

If I Had My Life To Live Over

by Erma Bombeck

If I had my life to live over, I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television - and more while watching life.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now go get washed up for dinner."

There would have been more "I love you's".. More "I'm sorrys" ...

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute... look at it and really see it ... live it...and never give it back.

So, take from this what you will, but smile for a while today and share that smile with those you love.

Bottom Line:  "Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the 'Titanic' who waved off the dessert cart." ~ Erma Bombeck

Barb, I'm sorry to hear you have family members are involved with a medical crisis. I wish them and you well. I, too, love the words of wisdom from Erma Bombeck. And I love how some words can make your day so much better. How some thoughts can change your entire attitude and outlook and make you see things so much more clearly. And the people who put these words together are simply amazing!

Thank you so much. My dad has been battling cancer since last July and now is thankfully in remission. Now I'm trying to catch up and finish a book. This is a nice reminder before Mother's Day not to angst about the pages that aren't getting written and just enjoy the moments

Barb, I'm very sorry to hear about your family. I'll keep you all in my thoughts. I feel your pain. I lost my two aunts to cancer within 2 years of each other, my sister to cancer, my 15 yr old son to an accident. Then I nursed my mother through blindness and kidney disease from Diabetes until her death 21 months ago. And last week, my dad was diagnosed with cancer. It's very hard but I appreciated the opportunity to spend quality time with my family and tell them how important they were to me before their deaths. Stay stron! I love Erma Bombeck and particularly this piece. She always had a way of making you think. Becky

Barb, thanks so much for sharing this! As you know, while I was in Pittsburgh for RT I was commuting to the ICU to visit a sick relative, and now our family has two more relatives who have fallen ill....I'm going to pass this on to them.

Barb, how nice that you have given all of us a little giftby reproducing Erma's words in the midst of your sadness. I loved Ermaand miss her columns. I had a major brush with death last year and I have embraced some of Erma's philosophies. I wear more color and less black now. I take time to stop and smell the chocolate as well as the roses. Take care of yourself.

Thanks Barb, for this wonderful wakeup call. Its been a tough year medically for me and it seems i get one thing resolved and another rears its ugly head each a bit more trying than the previous one, but through it all you have to have faith and a great sense of humor. Erma had both and what she says is timeless.

Erma also wrote a book about people who thrive despite having terrible diseases. The book is titled I Want to Grow Hair, I Want to Grow Up, I Want to Go to Boise. really. This is my favorite of her books because the subject is so awful, but her unique perspective made it so worthwhile to read. Perhaps you can get a copy for your family to share. Best wishes to them all. Susan

I will keep your family in my prayers. Illness is hard on everyone not just the family. Erma had a knack for saying just the thing with a touch of humor to make us remember what is important. Because of that she will always be as they say, "relevant." Take care of yourself as you take care of your family.

I'd learned long ago to live for the moment. One thing I'd do different is remind myself I'm not superwoman and that I cannot do everything. You need to sit back and relax once in awhile. Prayers to you and your family.

The only reason I picked up Erma Bombeck is because my Grandmother used to read her and laugh. She was a wonderful writer and I for one am glad that you sought to call out her work.
