What are Your Summer Beach Reads?

June 9, 2009
Cabana boy serving me my drinkWith the kids out of school and hopefully some fun vacation on the horizon, how do you choose what books will be your beach reads this summer?

Of course, the beach can just be in your mind (like mine is), but do you like light and fluffy fun reads or deep, thoughtful serious books?

Personally, I like to mix it up.  Something quick and quirky, then a thriller, maybe a historical, then a paranormal.  When I'm on vacation, I want pleasurable books I picked myself and not something I have to read for work (although most times they are one and the same).  It can be something I saved for a special occasion because I want to read it uninterrupted.

So, let us all know...who and what will you be reading while holding a frosty drink with an umbrella in it, served by a cabana boy?

My summer reads?  You'll see on my Friday, Your Turn blogs.

Bottom Line:
  "
You know you've read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend."  ~Paul Sweeney

LuAnn McLane's Redneck Cinderella (or any of her books, for that matter) is on the top of my stack, followed by Tails of Love and other anthologies. I'll save my Diana Gabaldon until fall.

Like any time of the year, I like to mix up my reading but mostly stick with women's fiction.
I just finished The Mine and the Well by Gin Phillips....it was a great southern novel.
Right now I'm reading Mindy Friddle's new one, Secret Keepers, and enjoying it very much.
In my "to be read" stack for the rest of the summer are.....The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton and a few by Elaine Viet that I just picked up at a conference.
So much to read....not enough hours!

Since I have to wait a while longer until August for Sherrilyn Kenyon's BAD MOON RISING, I'll be reading Marjorie Liu's Darkness Calls as soon as I get it and Catherine Mann's new Dark Ops story RENEGADE. And Donna MacMeans Seduction of the Duke...and Sarah Parr's new RENEGADE historical.

Now I just need to have a few days off....

I brought home bags of books from the WisRWA con, including Pamela Morsi's Red Hot Honky-Tonk Bar and Karin Tabke's Master of Craving, the next two books I plan to read.

I'll be picking from my ever growing to be read pile that I wouldn't have enough room to name all the titles here. Seriously I have over 900 books to read in different genres. I'm hoping by the end of the summer I'm down to 850 but with the amount of books I keep buying I don't see that happening. LOL

And I'm reading Twilight.

I hope to make a dent in my to-be-read pile this summer. I have several books from other New Jersey writers that I plan to get to soon: The Forbidden Daughter, by Shobhan Bantwal, Too Hot for a Spy, by Pearl Wolf, Soldier's Secret Child, by Caridad Pineiro, and Nobel Blood by Linda J. Parisi. However, I'd like to indulge in some Georgette Heyer, too.

Since my 'beach' is the backyard patio, I'm digging through my TBR pile and picking out the hardcovers--a mixture of bios, historical fiction, paranormals, mysteries, and thrillers. If I was getting away, I'd be packing lightweight paperbacks in the same various genres.

Until I get a glare screen cover for my laptop, I get to read while the kids swim in our pool! Kinda kills the incentive to find one :) So far, I've devoured Lori Handeland's Phoenix series, Berta Platas' Lucky Chica, Gillian Summers' The Tree Shepherd's Daugher and quite a few others. I'm planning to finish the Summers Faerie Trilogy as the first was quite enjoyable, definitely waiting on Sherrilyn's Bad Moon Rising, Rita Herron's July release, Dark Hunger and her current release Collecting Evidence, and almost anything else I can get my hands on to read!

Um...Does it surprise anyone to learn that I don't plan my reading ahead? I have lots of books I want to get to--written by Susan Wiggs, Devon Matthews, Barbara Hannay, Jennifer Johnson, Suzanne McMinn, and my SisterWriters Maddie James, Jan Scarbrough, and Janet Eaves. There's suspense, historical, contemporary, and some paranormal mixed in. The TBR pile gets bigger all the time. Better it than me, I guess! ;)

I've never quite understood the question. I pretty much read what I read when I read it, and vacation is when I'm too busy to read at all. But I don't take vacations from my books.

After I finish reading new releases of my favorite series (Yasmine Galenorn, Laurell K Hamilton to name a couple) I plan to work on starting and finishing some "you HAVE to read this" books by friends/family who won't leave me alone until I do: JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series , and Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series.

Can't read at the beach or the pool, but curled up in bed. What's on my night stand is more then eclectic. "Diana Mosley" (biography about a Nazi Brit - is that an oxymoron?) The Book Thief (is there a theme here?) Prophecy of the Sisters and The Twelve (thanks to BEA!) I also have 100 pounds of books coming from BEA including Michael Connelly's "The Scarecrow." Wish me luck!

When I'm not busy doing research for my next novel, I'm going to read Karen White's 10th novel, "The House on Trad Street, and the "prequel" to Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, "The Angels Game," and "The Family Man" by Eleanor Lipman. How will I ever find to write?

I am going on vacation next week, and I am looking at the huge pile of books I have to be read, and will pick fun, light, and mystery reads.... but I am still having a hard time holding back from taking the whole box. However, I just finished reading The Beach House by Jane Green for the August selection of my book club. Fantastic for summer!! I will also say I read the entire Harry Potter series in one summer. That was fun!

My reading habits drift toward straight contemporary romance and romantic suspense in the summer. That said, I'm on the lookout for new romantic suspense authors/books to read and devour. I like those larger than life heroes with a commanding presence and a no nonsense attitude. That said, I also like a good romantic comedy and am on the lookout for a few of those as well. As you can tell, I'm still getting my reading list ready for this summer. My poor credit card is gonna melt right along with my pina colada!

I'm planning on stocking up for summer at the RWA conference in DC. Which isn't to say that I don't already have too many books (though nothing to rival Leeann's 900 -- zoiks!) but there's something extra fun about having them hot from the author's hands :)

I pick books that entertain and don't require a great deal of thought. I have to keep an eye on the kids so books that I have to pay too much attention to at the beach are not good!

I've just read three oldies that are excellent -- My Antonia by Willa Cather (wonderful descriptions), The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (ah, now I see why it is called the perfect novel) and Jewel by Brett Lott (breaking my heart.) But the best new one is Bonnie Grove's Talking to the Dead. Disorienting, disturbing, but ultimately deeply satisfying and explanatory.

Now -- back to writing my novel...
