Twilight the movie
I'm going to see Twilight tomorrow with Andrew.  Neither of us read the book, so we have no clue what to expect.  Andrew thinks there's been too much hype for it to be any good, but I'm optimistic.  No doubt the theater will be filled with teens and tweens, but I'm hoping most will have gone to the midnight show (we're going at noon).  Of course, it's always fun to sit in a full movie house to get the reactions from others (as long as they don't talk during the movie...don't even get me started on that).  I'll report back next week.

I'll probably read the book after the movie so I can see what was missing.  When we saw Quantum of Solace last week (loved it!), they had a preview for a new Jake Gyllenhaal movie, Prince of Persia.  It looked pretty good and then Andrew told me it was based on a video game.  But then so was Lora Croft Tomb Raider and that wasn't bad.  But I was thinking more about the fact that they seem to be making more movies about video games and comic books then of reading books.

I know the Secret Life of Bees is out and people loved that book, but Harry Potter isn't due until next year, so what other book is due out as a movie?   And what books have you read lately that you'd like to see made into a movie?  Or what about Hollywood writing something original and not using a book?  (Or not recycling another old tv show)

But it's also Your Turn Friday and that means it's your turn to tell everyone what you've been reading lately.   Go ahead and make those recommendations.

Bottom Line:  Now my  biggest decision.  Which of the above T-shirts should I wear to the movie?

I'm going to see Twilight today and I'm sure it will be crazy there. I actually have the Team Edward shirt and I'll be wearing it. This week I read Born in Death by J.D. Robb. Love my Roarke!

Enjoy the movie, Barbara! Why not wear a t-shirt advertising your column instead? :) I'm reading the CHRISTMAS WEDDINGS anthology, by Carole Mortimer, Shirley Jump, and Margaret McDonagh.

I'm catching up with Lee Child and reading Running Blind. I finished Tripwire last night. We've shifted to Netflix lately--movies are expensive, too many commercials (although I've learned and I bring my eBookwise with its backlight so I can pass the time before the real show starts) and usually too many kids. Living in a tourist mecca, it's unavoidable. And I know what you mean about talkers. We're down to one or two live movies a year.

Original ideas? Hollywood still does that? :D I am, in fact, starting on Twilight this weekend. Reading it before seing the movie might be a mistake, but since I refuse to fight crowds and actually hate going to the theater, it's a mistake I'll have to live with.

Defiance (starring Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber) is opening at the end of December in NY/LA and January everywhere else. It's based on a book by Nechama Tec. And in the interest of full disclosure, I'm the publicist for the book. But the movie really does look awesome!

I would forget the Team Edward T-Shirt. As you've not read the book, why would you join his team :) I most likely will wait until Twilight goes to DVD. I finally got on the Gena Showalter bandwagon-Lords of the Underwood. Just finished to The Darkest Night. Onto the others in her series unless the library steers me somewhere else. Though I did just purchase J.D. Robbs latest - Salvation in Death hmmmmm Roarke :D

Well, nuts my comment got garbled--the film reviewer said about "Twilight" to bring earplugs for the high-pitched squeals of the teens and tween girls the first time they get a glimpse of Edward. I read the books but I'm waiting for the DVD of the movie.

And movies being released in December: "Frost/Nion" and "Doubt" are adaptations from plays; "The Tale of Desperaux" is from Kate Camillo's Newberry Award winner; "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story; "Marley & Me" is coming out (John Grogan's memoir); "Revolutionary Road" is from the Richard Yates novel; and "The Spirit" is from the Will Eisner comic book.

I've read Twilight and New Moon, I'm waiting on the next one to come in the mail. I'm getting ready to read the new J.D. Robb novel and the new J.D. Robb short story in Suite 606. Not planning to see Twilight. I have a personal rule, If I read it, I don't watch the movie. If I watch the movie, I don't read the book. I keep making comparsions of ALL the details that don't match, driving myself crazy; hence, the personal rule. Keeps my blood pressure down, LOL!!

Having read all four books in the Twilight saga I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. Having both read and seen The Secret Life of Bees I can say that both the book and movie are wonderful. In fact it's one of the better book to movie translations I've seen in some time. The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas by John Boyne has just recently hit theatres. Not exactally a warm and fuzzy feel good story but one that I think is going to be worth seeing.

(Continuing from where the quote mark deleted the rest of my comment...) -- The Authors on the Air column in PW Daily has a number of books-to-film entries, fairly regularly, many of them documentaries. So I think that's still well and healthy. Hollywood originals, though, I have a harder time coming up with. I'm reading What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell and Rachel Vincent's second werecat book, Rogue.
