Blurbing with the Babes
January 2, 2008

Before we start the blurbing for 2008, I have to tell you about my debut experience yesterday.  Rowena Cherry invited me to guest on her internet radio talk show, Cherry Picking.  Also chatting along were authors Jacquie Rogers, Deborah MacGillivray, Teresa D'Amario, Diane White and my Beyond Her Book blurber extraordinaire, Joyce.  This was my first foray into the audio media and I've got to say I liked it a lot.  It was great fun, I learned new things and I think I'm ready for television (can someone call Oprah for me and let her know I'm available...or maybe Jon Stewart).  Check it out and let me know what you think.

Now, on to the real stars of Wednesdays, my WW ladies and friends with their reads of the week.

Eyes of Crow by Jeri Smith-Ready

Reviewed by Joyce

In most literature I’ve read, the crow has always been seen as the harbinger of death, and those who foresee a death have been called crows.  This has always seemed a negative thing.  Jeri Smith-Ready has, however, brought it into a different light.

As each person reaches the age to Become, he or she is chosen by an Animal Spirit to take on the strengths and talents of that aspect.  Owls are wise, wolves are hunters, wolverines are ferocious warriors.  Those few chosen by Crow are given the precious and respected gift of easing the way for those passing from life into death.  Rhea is a young woman who must learn to use the power of her gift as her privilege and her duty, without losing herself in the sorrow and despair that accompanies death.

This was a beautiful story, and I was warmed by its gentleness, love and compassion.  These days I tend to get caught up in the supernatural screwiness of vampires and werewolves, so this was a departure into a different spiritual world that I enjoyed very much.  I understand there is a second book out now, Voice of Crow, and I look forward to reading that soon.

Drop Dead Gorgeous by Linda Howard

Reviewed by Judy

WOW !!!!!  Linda tells a story of mystery, intrigue and love.  Blair Mallory, a self proclaimed High Maintenance Female and fitness salon owner, lives through a series of events which could be viewed as coincidences, but are they?  Lieutenant Wyatt Bloodsworth is her fiance who gives Blair one month to get the wedding plans done or it's off to Vegas.  Who wants Blair out of the way?  It was quite a suprise to discover the real stalker.

Along for the Ride by Michelle M. Pillow

Reviewed by Joyce

Megan Matthews is a NYPD detective who is driven to do her job and ignore her personal life.  She thinks her personal life has been shot anyway by the photographer who got her plastered all over newspaper headlines with a sensational photo of her take-down of a killer.  Yet this guy, Ryan, turns up everywhere, and when her sister starts incorporating him into the family gatherings, she can no longer avoid him.  As she’s forced to spend time with him, her ambivalence changes to passion and on to love.

Light and hot, this erotic romance might be just what one is looking for, a fast read on a cold winter evening.

The Sea King by Jolie Mathis

Reviewed by Joyce

When Isabel is saved from drowning by a Dane warrior, she wakes to learn his actions were misinterpreted as an assault and he is being imprisoned and tortured.  As the king’s half-sister, she knows her way through the castle’s secrets and helps him escape.  Two years later he returns with an army and uses those secrets to invade the castle, seek vengeance on her brother, and steal her heart.

Conquest, treachery and savagery are the fears and constants in the British Isles during the times after the Roman departure.  The Sea King is a romantic excursion into the period, and readers can lose themselves in the colorful imagery.

Bottom Line:  It's starting to look like I'll have to retitle blurb day to "Joyce and Friends."

Barbara, we have been nattering for couple months now on my space and emails, so it was grand fun to chat with you and Joyce in the old-fashioned way - on the phone! Rowena is simply fab as a hostess, and I enjoy all these shows she does on Internet radio. (She will give you a MP3 file of the show so you can post it on your MySpace blog! It was a blast to start the New Year out talking with you and the Nina Bangs' fan Joyce!!

I listened!! Super show. You mentioned Nina Bangs - adore her! Only problem, I always end up with a side ache from laughing! I am reading Kennedy's Enchanting the Lady - adore it. I have to agree when someone said when a perosn really raves about a book being a good read, I want to try it. All you ladies were just so much entertaining. Good Show!

Love your radio debut. About ebooks, you might want to connect with your fellow PW Blogger David Rothman who writes the "E-BOOK REPORT". See what reading your blog did -- connected me with another blog. I use to only come to PW to check out the lists when Sherri has a new book released.

Barbara, I checked with Rowena who checked with Lillian the station owner, and they make the MP3 of the show available after two weeks. So around the 15th it should be ready for people to listen to. I will keep you posted. It's a grand fun show, so I am sure all your PW fans will want to catch it on the repeat.
