Your Turn Part 2
June 8, 2007

Well, here it is Friday again.  Time to get your reads of the week.  Feel free to post what you're reading or what you've read.  Brag about a favorite book or author.  I have way too many, so I'll just tell you what I'm reading now.

I'm still plugging away at the tons of books I received at the Romantic Times Booklovers Convention.  I ended up sending a huge box home and I even took an empty suitcase along for that reason, but it was full!

So, right now, I'm reading Joy Nash's The Grail King.  I had the pleasure of meeting Joy and she is utterly delightful.  She also sent me the advance copy of the third book in the highly anticipated Immortal Series.  I already read book one, Immortals: The Calling by Jennifer Ashley, but I need to finish Robin T. Popp's book two, Immortals: The Darkening, before I get to Joy's Immortals: The Awakening. Then Jennifer finishes it off with Immortals:  The Gathering.   I hate waiting for these books when they're such great reads.  I always need to know what happens next.

In the car I'm listening to Don't Look Down by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer.  I've read the book, but I absolutely love the he said/she said way of the reading.  It give a whole new perspective when more than one person does the audio and it really helps when it's a fun story.  (More alligators!!)

On my iPod, I have Chill Factor by Sandra Brown.  This book is a thriller about a woman stuck in a cabin with a suspected (she doesn't know it, thank goodness) killer during a snow storm.  This is a perfect time of year to listen to this frosty tale,...especially while taking a brisk walk on a hot day.

Bottom line:  Love or hate it...your turn to tell about it.

I've been hearing very good things about a new novel entitled 'Dreams of the Mighty' by Kim Wood. Apparently it's a sort of metaphysical, spiritual, humorous adventure. I think it's from the Canadian publisher 'Baico'. Has anyone out there heard of it or read it?

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant and Midwives by Christopher Bohjalian were both excellent. At the moment I am reading Sweetwater Creek by Anne Rivers Siddons. So far this book is very good.

Sarah, I did check out Keith G. Wright's website and now I want to see the books. Rupert, I couldn't find this book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble or the library, but it was on the Baico website. If you go there, you can read the first 5 pages.

I've spent this past week reading Lord Perfect by Loretta Chase and should finish it by tomorrow night. It started out kind of slow for me but has turned into a really good read. After this, I hope to start on Courting Trouble by Deeanne Gist, who is a totally new author to me...but I fell in love with the cover of this book!!!

Barbara, I must say that you are utterly delightful, too! I hope you're enjoying The Grail King. I just handed my editor the next book in the Druids series, Deep Magic, which will be released in January of 2008. Now, in addition to anxiously awaiting the release of Immortals: The Awakening on July 31, I'm getting into the rough draft of my 3rd Druid book, Silver Silence. But the beautiful weather outside keeps calling my name! I wish I could see my laptop screen in the sun. Reading now: Madam of the House by Donna Birdsell (Harlequin Next). What a hoot! Real estate agent Cecilia Katz, a 40 year-old flat broke real estate agent, is desperate to raise some big bucks to keep her autistic child in an expensive special needs boarding school. With the help of her twenty-something male assistant, she launches a "risky business" scheme involving love-starved older women and young, studly college guys looking to raise a little tuition cash. The result is romance, mystery and non-stop laughs. Madam of the House should definitely be on everyone's required summer reading list! Perfect for beach, pool, lake, or campground! ~Joy Nash

Two recommendations: one new, one older (a little). The new one is Marianne Wiggins's THE SHADOW CATCHER (see my review on writingdoctor.typepad.com). The older one is WATER FOR ELEPHANTS by Sara Gruen, which is really wonderful. Send me some recommendations of your own. I'll read them and report.

I just finished a wonderful thriller, just published in the U.S. Ann Cleeves' Raven Black won the Duncan Lawrie Dagger Award for the best crime novel of 2006, and deservedly so. The Shetland Islands is an appropriate setting for a mystery in which all the characters seem lonely. Lesa Holstine, www.lesasbookcritiques.blogspot.com

I am reading Erica Spindler's Copycat. She writes some of the best "woman in jeopardy" books out there. This is a great thriller.
