Natural Born Charmer
April 1, 2007
Saturday is always a good day for a fast, fun read. So, I picked up Natural Born Charmer by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. This book follows her Chicago Stars saga by focusing on Dean Robillard, quarterback extraordinaire, making a cross country trip from Colorado to Tennessee where he owns a farm. Cruising through Colorado he comes across headless beaver Blue Bailey. (Every lame joke from junior high on ran through my head) Of course, he picks her up and they ride off into the sunset. Just kidding, today is April Fools Day after all.
Once they reach the farm, total dysfunctional family high jinx ensue. Dean's estranged mom has a history of leaving her son while she floats from man to man. Dad, who never married Mom, also wasn't around for Dean. Throw in Dean's adorable 11 year old step-sister, another child raising herself. Then there's Blue who's mother is so busy saving the world that Blue spent her childhood being shuffled from person to person.
Aside from the convaluted cast, Phillips again delivers her trademark good people finding themselves and each other. Enjoyable read, but personally, I liked
Match Me If You Can better. There's just something sadistically fun about watching others flounder about the dating scene trying to find that "perfect" someone. And do we ever really know what we want until it hits us upside the head?
Bottom line: Beware of headless beavers
