A Sprinkling of Stardust
August 14, 2007

It's always a special day when my son calls to see a movie with me.  Even though he asks what I want to see, it usually ends up being his choice.  (Don't even get me started on Mother's Day 1995 when he took me to the show and we ended up seeing Bad Boys with Will Smith.  Not really what I would have chosen to see with my 14 year old son.)  So even though I was pushing for Hairspray  (I mean, come on, John Travolta with ratted hair and Christopher Walken as his significant other.  What's not to love?), we ended up with seats for the 12:45 showing of Stardust.

Don't get me wrong, I also wanted to see this film, but I was in the mood for a comedy.  To my delight it was a comedy...and an adventure...and a fantasy...and, best of all, a love story.  Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer were nothing short of brilliant.

Now usually I like to read the story before I see the movie, but since this was a graphic novel by Neil Gaiman, I probably wouldn't have picked it up or even read it if it was given to me.  (DC Comic version)  After seeing this movie, I'm going to have to rethink reading these type of books.  A new addition of it is available in hardcover, but beware of buying the movie version of the book if you're really looking for the original illustrations.  I'm giving this movie 2 big thumbs up.  I cried at the end and that was even with a "happily ever after" ending that is a must for me.

Bottom line:  Stardust:  think Princess Bride...on steroids

Hi Barbara! It's funny that you posted about this, because i've been thinking along the same lines. I tend to think, "Oh, i don't like fantasy S/F much." But then recently I picked up a copy of Ellen Kushner's "The Privilege of the Sword" and just started chuckling and was drawn in. Full disclosure -- Ellen is a friend, which is why I picked it up -- but I had never (gulp) actually READ one of her books before. And now this one has won me over! - Clea www.cleasimon.com

Okay, you got me with the Princess Bride line. Funny timing -- tomorrow's my grown son's birthday, and my mind has been wandering all day to what I was doing when I felt the first labor pangs, his birth, life, etc. So, I can definitely appreciate how special it is to have your kid call and invite you to any movie. Although, like you, I would've opted for Hairspray (I LOVED the original!), Stardust is also on my must-see list, so it's super to read such a stellar recommendation!

I'm not really a graphic novel kind of girl either, but someone (HarperCollins??) published a novella version of "Stardust"...not bad. And probably cheaper than a graphic novel. They get pricy.

I'm glad you posted this, Barbara! I've been on the fence about this movie, wasn't sure whether to see it in the theater for wait for video. I'm putting in on my must see list now.

I've actually read the book, and not the graphic novel version of it. So look around & see if you can find the older publication of the title. You'll love it. The book is just terrific.

I've never been much of a fantasy person either and I've never seen Princess Bride, but from all the discussion here, I may have to expand my horizons.

Thanks Barbara for the recommendation--I've been wondering what movie to take my Mom to, who enjoys fantasy, comedy & romance--this sounds perfect! My grandchildren (of all ages) also liked this movie!

My daughter, who loved the movie, recommended reading the graphic novel first. As in all movies, a lot of story had to be left out, and reading first will will give you needed background.

I loved the Princess Bride and have great things about Stardust. I'm sure I would have never picked this up in graphic novel form, but I, like others here am ready to embrace another side of the written word.

I've not heard anyone I know say anything about this movie one way or another. Now, you have me wanting to go see it. I'll see if I can squeeze it in this weekend. Thanks Barb!

Now that you said it's a comedy--and it made you cry--I'll definitely see it. I love a book or a movie that makes me laugh and cry. I did see Hair Spray, and it was terrific! Definitely go and see it. My husband didn't want to see it, so I went alone. Because of the musical numbers I wanted to see it on the bigger screen instead of waiting for it to come out on DVD.

Okay, folks, let us understand this better: _Stardust_ isn't and never was a graphic novel. It was first published, in TEXT form, with illustrations by Charles Vess, in serial fashion in a trim size similar to a comic book, by a comic book publisher (who had a long history publishing graphic novels by Gaiman), but is is and has never been a comic book or graphic novel. It was then published without the illustrations. Not that you should be afraid of reading graphic novels! -- if you haven't been reading comics all your life like many of us, it might present a learning curve. But you can do it! Think of them as newspaper comic strips collected as books.

Hank, Thanks for the clarification. I had a huge comic book collect as a kid (wish I still had them). My son is an artist and I plan on getting him the story with illustrations. As for graphic novels, I think whatever gets people to read is fine with me and I was promised a copy of the Laurell K. Hamilton Anita Blake graphic novel. I can't wait!
