First This, that and the other thing of 2008

January 7, 2008
The first Monday of January 2008 and here's the news I've received this week.

From Jacquie Rodgers: "I'm even getting into the podcast arena. I'll have a neurofibromatosis awareness podcast airing Jan. 13, and Lillian wants me to do a regular feature called Against All Odds, which would be authors, singers, songwriters, or artists of any sort who have overcome challenges of some sort, whether a physical disability, disastrous circumstances, or whatever. I don't know if I'll be worth a darn, but it's something I believe in deeply (my daughter has neurofibromatosis and my mother was a paraplegic) so I'm going to give it a whirl."

I've heard Jacquie podcast before and I know she'll do great. As soon as I get the link, I'll post it.

From Mark David Gerson : The Moonquest won the Book Cover of the Month award from Erin Aislinn's Contest. The artist is Angela Farley.

Congratulations Mark David and Angela, it's a beautiful cover and, as we've discussed many times here, great covers make a big difference.

From Diana Groe: "Diana Groe's Erinsong is going international. Her Irish love story has already been translated into German and Dutch. Now Erinsong is headed to the Eternal City. An Italian publishing house has closed a deal with Leisure to distribute Erinsong in Italian. Will the new title be ErinAria?"

High five to Diana! It's got to be exciting to see your book in foreign print.

From Marissa Doyle: "We’re the Class of 2k8, offspring of the Class of 2k7—a unique cooperative of debut authors working together to share energy and information. We just opened for business and have our first two book launches this week. Here you'll meet 28 first-time children's novelists -- crossing genres, spanning the full range of MG (middle grade)and YA (young adult) and working with all the major publishers -- who have come together in the Class of 2k8. We'll also direct you to lots of other great resources for kids, parents, writers, booksellers, teachers, librarian, and anyone who loves to read!" Thanks Marissa, I'm sure there's a lot out there who appreciate all the help you offer.

From Chaucer the Dog: "I will be at Distant Lands Travel Bookstore in Pasadena, Calif., a week from tomorrow (1/14) to do a slideshow presentation and talk about my travels. Apparently, when the owner heard that I was a DOG who had authored a BOOK about ROAD TRIPS, she responded, "We have to get him into the store." As usual, we are donating 10% of sales at the event to my favorite animal rescue group."

Finally, I'd like to announce that I have cracked the 500 friend barrier on MySpace (final count 503). And the 500th person to befriend me was author Patrice Wilton. My heartfelt thanks to all who took the time to send me messages, comments and words of encouragement along with everyone who bugged their buds until they joined in on the craziness. It was great fun and there's always room for more when you're ready.

Please contact me with any news, kudos or just plan fun, need to know items.

Bottom Line: "I get by with a little help from my friends." - John Lennon

The dog is adorable.

Momma Fox Terrier said to Fox Terrier pup,
though all of life's adversities,
keep your tail up!

(Of course, the dog is probably a giant schnauzer or something and I just look silly!)

I have to say Jacquie book is so delightful. I won't comment on the stupid chicken name, but then it's is a very highly developed chicken.

I think it's wonderful that Highland Press takes an active interest in royalties for charity. Jacquie book is donating her royalties to fight neurofibromatosis. My book Cat O' Nine Tales sees half of my royalties going to Alleycat.org to help save feral cats worldwide. And No Law Against Love, a collection of 24 stories saw the authors donating their royalties to help fight Breast Cancer. So not are you getting wonderful short stories and novellas, you are helping worthy causes.

Jacquie's cover is done by Monika Wolmarans, Holland. (who happens to be my proof-reader, too!)

Jacquie Rogers has a wonderful sense of timing in her stories. Her books are always full of things to make you laugh...and sometimes think. :) Faery Special Romances is refreshingly different and has a place of honor on my Keeper Shelf. As for the 'chicken name'...well, all I can say is that chicken was named after a dynamite chick!

I think it's fantastic that Jacquie Rogers is donating her royalties from her Faery Special Romances anthology to help find a cure for neurofibromatosis. And kudos to Highland Press for donating some of their profits to good causes. If more people followed suit, the world would be a better place.

My oldest son has NF. It's often misunderstood and underdiagnosed so we're so thankful to have had a pediatrician who picked up on the CAL spots when he wasn an infant and we've been able to keep a close eye on him as he's grown up.

Thanks to Jacquie for getting out and doing such a wonderful job for NF awareness.

I think it's just a marvelous way to raise money for causes. You get a book; money goes to charity. I think, Jacquie, the show will be a good one. With your organization skills and your heart, yo will do well!

Sherrie Holmes commented:

I knew nothing about neurofibromatosis until I saw that Jacquie Rogers' royalties were donated to the Children's Tumor Foundation in support of NF research. Jacquie's a great writer and a one-person dynamo, so I think CTF will benefit greatly from their association with Jacquie. I'm so pleased her books are getting the exposure she deserves. This is a win-win situation for all concerned. And besides, she's just such a great writer!

Well, you're certainly deserving of the compliments. Faery Special Romances is a delightful book. And when books like this benefit worthy causes as well, I think we need to take the time to say kudos to the author as well as the book!!!

Keely is one rockin faery. I first met her in the short story Faery Good Advise, in the No Law Against Love anthology, all the royalties from that book went to breast cancer. Jacquie is donating the royalties from Keely's book to the Children's Tumor Foundation. to find a cure for Neurofibromatosis. Keely is defiantly my favorite Faery.
