"Name the Blog," she said.
July 23, 2007

When they asked me to write this blog on women's fiction, I was told to come up with a name for it.  While I wanted to talk about my passion, books, I also wanted to have discussions about what it is that makes books so personal and special to us.  With the conferences, I hoped to take you behind the scenes with the authors to see another side of them.   Beyond the Book seemed like the perfect fit.

Well, imagine my dismay when I received an e-mail from the PW home office telling me I need to change the name.  Apparently, Beyond the Book is trademarked (and here I thought I had an original idea).  So, I sent off these suggestions:

Books and Beyond     After the Book     Books and More     More than Books     Babble about Books

Books Babble            Telling Tales          Talking Tales           Beyond the Blog      Book Blog

Dishing about Books

In response, I received a message asking if I could make it say something about women's fiction, so people would know the subject matter.

Being the team player that I am I suggested:

Menopause Manuscripts
Vagina Variety
Busty Books
The B(r)est Books Around
Menstration Memos
Nipple Notes
Pregnant Pauses

But not wanting them to think I'm a smart ass  (too late), I also included:

The Women's Lounge
Her Bookshelf
Books, she said
Books, she wrote
Her Booklist
What's she reading?
She said, "Book Me"
She Readings
Books for Her

None of these made the grade either.  So Dear Readers, I'm taking it to you.  Help me find a name for the blog.  I've got books from the RWA conference to send to the winner (blatant bribe).

Bottom Line:  A blog by any other name...

I like something with the Vey View in it, too. Oh, Barbara, did they know what they were getting into when they hired you?!?! I can just imagine the look on someone's face when they opened that email. (Although if it was a woman, she probably laughed like the rest of us...)

I'm in title limbo myself at the moment. We're trying to come up with something for my first book. I haven't heard anything back on the suggestions I sent in so I'm thinking they didn't fly. sorry for the lack of punctuation -- I had the above titles as a list but that didn't work out -- I seconded Meredith's "Femme Fiction," and added "A Blog of Our Own," "Our Bodies, Our Shelves," (but that sounds like it could be medical), "The Distaff Lounge." I'm thinking "A Blog of Our Own" is my fave of my own suggestions!

JOANN ROSS commented:

Having spent the past weeks coming up with a title to describe my upcoming RS trilogy (hard enough to come up with the book titles themselves this past April!), I'm hugely title brain dead. But I am LMAO at the second list of suggested titles. I also like Kelley's What Women Read, though given that we're such eclectic readers, that would have to include horror, thrillers, literary, etc, etc. I suspect part of the problem is that Women's Fiction, itself, is difficult to define.

Elizabeth, it's scary to think of you and Jade together. :) As to the name, I like the word bodacious, it goes well with Barbara {grin} Feminine Side, I think the feeling is that the blog name should let people know kind of the subject matter of the blog. So, if we can think of a feminine sounding blog name, hopefully it will announce women's fiction. Of course, I welcome all readers and have had several men comment with great posts. The name is only to make it better and user friendly. The suggestions so far are amazing. Keep thinking of them.

How about a play on the song title "What a girl wants?" with "What a girl reads" - however that might seem like this is aimed at a younger audience than what you have. One of my book clubs turned down the name "The Happy Bookers' so I will offer that one up for debate. I was one of the few who were tickled by that one. Does Vey rhyme with tea or bay though? You could have "Vey of Life" if it rhymes with bay. Maybe Booking through Rose Colored Glasses?? The possibilities just boggle the mind... Jenne
