Love Is Murder: The Final Verdict
February 4, 2008

The board of Love is Murder
L-R: Julie HyzyOphelia Julien, Hanley Kanar, Mary Welk

Whenever I come to these conferences, the time really flies by.  There are so many seminars, get-togethers, and parties.  Even going from point A to point B takes a while because there's always someone to stop and say hello to.  And while these mystery/thriller writers are a tight knit group, once they warm up to you, it's like being welcomed into a warm, caring family.

The breakfast interview was Tess Gerritsen, who admitted that she was alone on a book signing tour when she received a message saying "something about a list."  She called home and her husband told her that her son took a call from someone "about some list thing."  It was too late to call New York, so when she finally found out she hit the New York Times bestseller list, she went to the bar, told the bartender who pulled out a bottle of champagne and to celebrate bought the National Inquirer.  By the way, only 2 people stopped to talk to her at the booksigning and neither bought the book.

Next up was a great seminar with Morgan Mandel, Karen Syed, Todd Stone and Terri Stone about using the internet for marketing yourself.  They encouraged authors to make their sites more about the product then themselves and offered great tips on how to use MySpace, Facebook and blogging to their advantage.

Back:  Tess Gerritsen, Ann Macela  Bottom: Amy Alessio, Rhonda Dossett and Margo Justes

Cupid's Call panel talked about the trials and tribulations of writing romance.  Tess Gerritsen admitted that "Nothing is harder to write than a great romance."  This from a woman who has written about organ harvesting, serial killers, and the devil's own evil.

I also met up with Honoria Finkelstein and Susan Smily who write about a young English instructor who talks to ghosts.  Unfortunately, I missed their seminar which featured food.  After speaking with them, I won't miss the next one.

Love is Murder is the perfect conference to break up the winter doldrums.  With informative seminars, lively interactive events and breakfast interviews, there's always something going on.

Bottom Line:  Pencil this event in your calendar for next year and you'll have more to talk about then the weather (and goodness knows I'm sick of talking about it).

Sounds like you had a great conference! Tess Gerritsen is fabulous. She manages to weave a great romance into her books while keeping the suspense high. One of my favorite authors.

Barbara -- Lucky You! I've heard that Love is Murder is a dynamite conference. You get to go all the best places! Tess Gerritsen is such a talent. And I enjoyed getting to know Honoria Finkelstein and Susan Smily at Murder in the Grove last year. Those two are hilarious!

Thanks for the photos and the great time at dinner. LIM is one of my favorite conferences. I grew up reading mysteries and have such fun meeting long-time favorite authors and brand new ones as well. That panel on Cupid's Call was lots of fun, too.

Coming out of my writer's cave to say I'm so glad you made it there and back safely! I thought about you over the weekend -- even during the Superbowl, which shows how I fret about people I care about! Sounds like a fabulous conference.

Ann of the dragon pin belongs to my online writers' group and is a fabulous person. I like her -- and her books -- bunches! And, of course, Tess always has something fascinating to say! And you know, she's right about romance being hard. I'm working on a Christmas novella right now and although it's book #101 (or #102, depending on which of the two I'm working on I finish first) I'd forgotten how tricky it is to craft a compelling story when you can't put in killers and have your characters running for their lives, LOL

Barbara, It was so nice to meet you at Love is Murder. I've been to every one of them so far and have watched them grow. Each is better than the one before. Hanley Kanar and her band of volunteers put together such a great conference that even a snow storm would not keep people from coming! I also had the pleasure of meeting Tess Gerritsen who sat beside me at one of the booksignings. While I signed my second book, Girl of My Dreams, people came up to her getting autographs for her countless books. With all the books she's had published, she still managed to be charming and delightful and not at all pretentious, just like you'd hope someone successful would be. Of course, later on after my booksigning stint was over, I took the opportunity to buy one of her books so she could personally autograph it. It was a conference to remember! Morgan Mandel

Barbara, it sounds like so much fun! And yep, just the thing for winter doldrums. You need to hurry on down to Atlanta. We're in the low 70's today -- that'll cure your frostbite. ;)

It was a grand time. It's great to watch the guest authors interact with their readers. And I must admit, I was in heaven during the Single Malt Scotch Tasting Event. Learned a lot and kept myself toasty even though Chicago was a bit chilly. Like Jennifer (above) said, it's 70's here in Atlanta. Ah... warm feet. What a blessing.

Hey, Barbara Thanks for creating a stir in the hallways by whispering the words, "Publisher's Weekly." All of the authors suddenly looked like excited meerkats.
