Monday Morning Blues
January 14, 2008

And the pic of the day is of a kilted Gerard Butler for all you rabid Gerard fans.

Well, I've virtually been without an internet connection since Thursday.  Yesterday I managed 15 minutes before I was booted.  Today I'm working from my sister's house which wouldn't be so bad but she has dial up service, does child care and although the kids she watches are adorable, all are under the age of 3.  So keep in mind as you're reading this, that Clifford the Big Red Dog is on tv, breakfast is being consumed, milk is being spilled and tattling is rampent.  And the endless question, "What are you doing?" has been nonstop for the past half hour.  With that said, here's what who I heard from this week.

While I received many Christmas cards this year, Dorchester Publishing sent me this:

In lieu of sending cards this year, Dorchester has made a gift in your honor to Heifer International, a charitable orgazination that helps struggling people around the world become self-reliant for food and income. This contribution will help provide trees, seedlings and bees to several villages in need.

I was touched and though I'd never heard of this particular charity, I loved that the idea of trees, seedlings and something I never thought important...bees.  Sometimes things we things we take for granted can be the stuff of life for others.

From author Karen DionneA Backspace member, Patry Francis, whose debut novel The Liar's Diary is due to come out in trade paper on January 29, was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. She's had several surgeries and her prognosis is good, but since she's home recuperating, she won't be able to do anything with regard to promotion.

A few of her author friends are arranging a THE LIAR'S DIARY Blog Day for her on January 29, and the idea has REALLY taken off.  In just one week, 120 authors have already agreed to blog about Patry's book on the 29th.

It's wonderful to see this amazing writing community to come together for one of their own.  I'll be joining in on the 29th and if you're interested you can email Karen for details.

And from the world of e-books, MG Braden:  "This is for my ebook Love Songs (a contemporary romance, short story).  The Love Songs cover won theThe Dirk A. Wolf Honorable Mention Award for Excellence in eBook Cover Artwork in its category (Contemporary / Suspense / Mystery / Historical Romance) with EPIC.  You can find the link to the awards here."  Congrats MG!

Since it is Monday, here's our first installment in helping you to be a happier, healthier  you for 2008.   I've been fortunate enough to meet author Gerri Russell who has lost 84 pounds on Weight Watchers and is also a leader.  She's been kind enough to help with insightful hints to get us through this year.  Here's Gerri's story:

My weight loss journey began in 2001 when I could no longer ignore the fact that my baby weight gain was something more.  The day my “baby” turned 12, I knew I had to do something different.  I joined Weight Watchers and lost 84 pounds over the next year and ten weeks.  My journey had its struggles and successes, insights and pitfalls.  My biggest struggle was my inability to exercise.  I had injured my knee in a skiing accident years before.  Several surgeries later, my knee functioned well, but the additional weight I carried made activity excruciatingly painful.

But I realized that if I wanted to change my weight, I was going to have to change my habits.  So I pushed past the pain and started with a daily five-minute walk that during the next year turned into a four-mile course.

Over the past five years, I have maintained my weight.  But I have also discovered, through the eyes of those around me, how to find motivation when I need it, how to believe in myself, and how to dream big dreams.  It is my hope over the course of the next few months that Barbara and I can inspire, motivate, and encourage you to reach for your dreams, weight loss or otherwise.  We willing share what worked for us, and what didn’t.

Dream big!

Thanks Gerri, definitely words to live by and I look forward to working with you.

So, here's my tip of the week:  If the big picture looks overwhelming...don't worry about it.  Focus on today.  Just for today I'll (fill in the blank).  Drink more water, move for 10 minutes at a time, say no to one treat.  Believe me, it all adds up.  And once again, posting a comment enters you into the once a month drawing for a Subway gift card.

Remember that Monday's are This, that and the other thing days, so send your news, kudos and what's happenings to me.  I'll get in what I can.

Bottom line:  Whatever you do, if a 3 year old says "Smell this,"...don't.

LOL, great advice for a Monday morning, Barb. Ane wow, Gerard Butler of 300 fame what a honed and fit way to start off the day. Gotta love a man who can handle a large sword so well, and I'm a sucker for one who can make you drool over a leather kilt, but its the twinkle in the eye and the smile that wins me! Dear Gerri! Thank you so much for sharing your story. I am beginning to see that I am surrounded by heroines and thus need to pick up my own bootstraps and get myself in shape as well no matter what the physical problems. huge hugs to all and keep those hunks coming BARB.

LOL Love a guy in pink with a long sword. I happened to have decorated a couple of MySpace pages with him. Gotta share the happiness that pic brings. Great wisdom -- it reminds me of "how to eat an elephant?" Answer is one bite at a time. As for the 3 year old, yep, it's a don't.

Any picture of the magnificent Mr. Butler is a work of art, but the Scottish Hunk of Hearts worldwide looks like a cross between cherry fluff and chocolate cream. I could devour him like an ice cream cone. Thank you!

Thanks for the pic of GB. What a hottie, add in the awesome accent and I'm a goner. Loved him in PS I love you, though the guy who played Denny in Grey's was in that too so that was enough to like the movie. Had to remind myself that it wasn't the book. They changed so much I just pretended they were two different stories. I love Cecelia Ahern's books. Anyway thanks for the pick and for Gerri's story. Very inspiring. I lost 3.8 pounds this week for a total of 42.4 since joining ww in July. Reminds me i should get some subway for dinner. If you can't think of someone for the next gratuitous pic I nominate Clive Owen. he's dreamy.

Whoo-Hoo Barbara! A strong dose of our Gerry does a body good, especially for a Monday morning! An old boyfriend (pro football player) of mine used to say, "Only REAL men can wear pink!" Glad to see Gerry proving that theory correct. *hugs* Dayna

Thanks for such a gorgeous way to begin the week, with a guy who is so much more than just eye candy. But I swear I don't foam at the mouth and only bite when invited to! Am I a devoted Gerard Butler fan? Absolutely! Rabid? Not yet (and hopefully never)! Congratulations to Gerri too - what a fantastic accomplishment to take it off and keep it off.

Okay, GB is cute, but.... Kudos to those authors blogging to help Patry with publicity!! More and more the publishing houses are expecting authors to become more involved with the marketing of their books, so this will be a huge help to an author with interfering health problems! I'm also looking forward to seeing what you and Gerri come up with for tips. Bet they'll be wonderful!

I do a lot of writing with small kids in the house, and on the day I wrote a particularly steamy scene with Dragon Tales blaring in the background, I knew I was really a writer!

So glad you got in touch with Karen and are on board for the Patry Francis' blog. Doesn't her book look wonderful? I dug my car out from the snow to find a flat tire (argh!). Am going to call AAA tomorrow morning and thought I'd blow off the gym, but I'm inspired. I can't get to the gym, but I'm going to snowsuit up again and go walk for at least 20 minutes. Every little bit helps, right?

Planting trees is wonderful, but something we can all do in our back yards. What I would love to see is for authors and readers and publishers to start supporting the Haven Foundation. Stephen King founded the foundation, set up to help writers who had little or no support after natural disaster or illness hits.

www.thehavenfdn.org

I have been dealing with them due to Dawn Thompson's illness, and she is a one of the first authors awarded a grant from them. I cannot say enough about this organization.

Finally getting to check the blog. LOL about the "Smell this..." I've done pretty well with my new food plan despite the batch of no-bake chocolate oatmeal peanut butter cookies my husband made last night. I've lost a few pounds since last Monday and I'll just keep plodding along. I have a luncheon tomorrow at Olive Garden. Wonder what's healthy there? Eating out is always a problem.
