Your Turn 17
October 19, 2007

Hooray!!  We made it through another week.  Of course, that just brings us that much closer to Christmas, but in the meantime I actually have 2 books of the week.

First was Worth Every Risk by Dianna Love Snell.  This Rita Award winner has Angel Farentino fleeing for her life from her wealthy employer's compound after she discovers he isn't who she thought he was.  Meanwhile Dea Agent and former Navy pilot Zane Jackson, is working undercover when he discovers Angel hidden in his plane.  I loved that Angel was constantly training for a triathalon, so it was easy to imagine her making her great escapes.  It almost makes me want to train...almost.  Maybe I'll start by walking to the mailbox.  Slow and steady wins the race....except maybe a triathalon.

The second was Mine Till Midnight by Lisa Kleypas.  Originally, Ann read this for me, saying:

In Mine Till Midnight, Lisa Kleypas pairs half -Gypsy, gambling hell owner Cam Rohan (a secondary character in The Devil in Winter) with Amelia Hathaway, who is desperately trying to keep her not-quite-respectable family from falling into total ruin. As usual, Kleypas gives us delightful secondary characters and unusual plot situations. But it’s the attraction between untraditional Cam and decorous Amelia that will tug at your heart and keep you reading beyond your bedtime.

Well, I couldn't resist picking this up and I'll second what Ann said.  There's just something about a Gypsy that makes the pages sizzle and I was up way beyond my bedtime.

That's it for me this week.  How about you?  What are you reading?  Recommending?

Bottom Line:  With a good book...sometimes "Resistance is futile."

Barb, I read Mine Till Midnight next week and I still feel so...elated...from reading it. You know how it is when you read a book and it is just so good and you stay up all night long reading it even though you have to go to work very early the next day and the fact that you've not slept over 2 or 3 hours has no bearing on the workday because you are on such a natural high from having read such a magical book....oh, sigh...I want to go and read it again, already!!!

I can't think about Christmas yet. This week I started reading High Noon by Nora Roberts. So far so good.

I'm recommending one mystery and one nonfiction title. I just finished The Drop Edge of Yonder, the third Alafair Tucker mystery by Donis Casey. These mysteries, featuring a ranch family in Oklahoma in the early twentieth century, get better with each one. Wonder what it was like to cook, clean, do wash, and worry about ten children? Alafair Tucker does all of that, and still has time to investigate the murder of her brother-in-law. The nonfiction title is Soldier's Heart by Elizabeth D. Samet, a beautiful book about a civilian teaching literature to the cadets at West Point. It's a fascinating story of discovery, for her and her students. I also finished "Mine Till Midnight" in one evening because I couldn't put it down. I'm assuming (hoping) that Lisa Kleypas will continue the saga with some secondary characters--maybe Win and Merripen's story--and that we will discover how Merripen and Cam are connected. I just really enjoyed these characters.

I agree Christine, Merripen has to have his own story. Yes!! Another gypsy!!

I'm going to pick up 'Worth Every Risk'. Something about a woman constantly training appeals to me who constantly starts and never quite gets into form.

I'm reading The Devil's Right Hand by Lilith Saintcrow. It 3rd in the adventures of Dante Valentine, and we're really talkin' "devil". Hey, Barb, I enjoy these Friday "Your Turn" blogs a lot. I pretty much consider them to be my TBR list, I get so many titles from here. I wish more readers would share their stuff. Thanks!

Thanks Barb for your blogs--I can't believe it's "Your Turn 17"!! While still waiting for "The Innocent Man" by John Grisham, I picked up "One Good Turn" by Kate Atkinson--good reading!

I am reading The Serpent Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt and I can't put it down. This is, I think, the 3rd book in the series, but you don't have to read them in order.
