USA Olympic Gold Medal Swim Win
USA relay swim team slips past France by a fingernail for the Gold Medal

This has been an exciting weekend with the Olympics starting.  I love the gymnastics and swimming, but could easily do without the volleyball and fencing, although I still can't look away when it's on tv.  So when the gymnasts fall, I feel every bump and bruise.  When the swimmers dive in, I find myself holding my own breath.  When the personal stories are shown I get teary-eyed.  And when the National Anthem plays I get goosebumply and sing along.

Monday is the day I use to give the news, kudos and interesting happenings in the industry.  If you have any insider info, fascinating tibits or captivating revelations, send me an email here.  Here's what I got for this week.

From Marjorie's blog:  This picture was taken at a bus stop.  You can see the route information (in Chinese, of course), but check out that screen near the top.  That’s an actual television, covering the day’s Olympic events.  The picture quality was fantastic (at least, when you’re standing right in front of it).

If you really want that feeling of being there, author Marjorie Liu is blogging about the Olympics from China and you can follow her adventures here.

From Un-Tied Artists (Publisher):  Authors at Un-Tied Artists are free to explore fresh approaches to storytelling. For example, Silicon Valley Game is a tongue-in-cheek satire featuring the kind of witty dialogue that went out of style and now is making a comeback. Everest is Hollow breaks ground as an adventure novel mixing realistic climbing scenes with exploration of a lost world. Wire is a fast paced thriller, topical in this election year. Trap introduces an American Interpol agent stationed in Paris. Satan’s Touch is a thriller told in alternating chapters from the viewpoints of the villain and his pursuer. James Patterson used a similar device in his first Alex Cross novel, Along Came A Spider.

Un-Tied Artists donate their proceeds to Doctors without Borders. In 1999, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Doctors Without Borders for their work in relieving the suffering of underprivileged countries. Why a peace prize for doctors? Because terrorists find eager recruits among the despairing millions of this world, living in unthinkable conditions. By working with Doctors Without Borders, each book purchased from Un-Tied Artists buys a month’s worth of anti-malaria drugs.  (A wonderful way for authors to give back and to such an amazing organization)

The Accidental Demon Slayer
From Leah Hultenschmidt, editor at Dorchester:  Just thought you'd want to be one of the first to know that The Accidental Demon Slayer by Angie Fox hit the extended New York Times list this week.  We're incredibly proud. (Angie was the winning bidder on Brenda Novak's Diabetes Auction for guest blogging on Beyond Her Book.  Congrats Angie on making the list for the first time!)

From the RWA:  Here's the list of winners of the Rita awards (given to published books) and Golden Heart awards (given to unpublished manuscripts).  (Kudos to all the finalists and winners)

Also, at the end of the month I'll be attending author Heather Graham's Writer's for New Orleans Conference held in (surprise) New Orleans.  There'll be panels, a book signing, dance lessions, tours and even dinner theater.  Not to mention, my favorite, the beignets (mouth starting to water).

Bottom Line:  I'm exhausted from watching the Olympics already and they've only been on for 3 days.  By the end, I'll need a vacation.

Congrats to Angie Fox. I wonder if guest blogging on your column helped catapult her to the extended list. In addition to her wonderful writing, of course. :) But I bet you'll get even more bids next year!

Guest blogging with Barbara was an absolutely wonderful way to get the word out about The Accidental Demon Slayer. And it was for a great cause, too. I'll bet she gets even more bids next year.

I shared a lunch with Angie at RWA, and was thrilled to meet the author of a book that I'd been discussing with my friends only an hour or so earlier. I adore the title, and I can't wait to get into the book. Angie is a gem of a writer and a lady, and hitting the BSL is well deserved.

I am a total Olympics junkie. I've been staying up way too late watching the games. I still can't believe that men's 4 x 100 freestyle. What a win! And last night our hometown girl won a bronze medal in the women's 100m backstroke. She also swims the 200 back, and that's not only her best event, but she's the current world record holder. The final is on Saturday. She and #2 son played soccer together when they were 5 years old, and now she's winning Olympic medals. AND a girl #1 son went to high school with is running the 100m hurdles for Nigeria on Sunday.

Lots of hot bodies around the Olympic village. Yum!
