Could This Week Get Any Worse?
March 7, 2008

This was quite the emotional week here in the Frozen Tundra.  Our beloved Brett Favre has retired from the Green Bay Packers.  His tearful and heartfelt press conference didn't leave a dry eye in the house (even my 7 year old grandson cried and he lives in St. Louis).  Brett and his family have been an institution here for the past 17 years and he will be deeply missed.  Personally, my Sunday afternoons just won't be the same without the razzle-dazzle that #4 brought to the game.  Enjoy your retirement Brett, you deserve it.

Then to top the week off, my doctor's office called to tell me my health insurance was cancelled and I totally freaked.  Turns out it was my fault.  It used to be that if you didn't pick a health provider every year, you just got the one you had the year before.  Well, the rules changed and because I didn't physically say who I wanted, I was given the default insurance.  So, the good news is that I still have health insurance, but the bad news is that it's with a different carrier.  What a pain in the butt!

And don't even get me started on my hot water heater!

Because of the stress and depression that came with Brett's retirement news <sniff>, I only managed to finish 2 books this week (although I'm currently reading 2 more and listening to one in my car).  I'll tell you what I've read and then you can let me know what you've been reading lately.

First up is Warrior's Bride by Gerri Russell.  Lady Isobel was held captive in a tower with her mother until the age of 7 when her mother died.  Now, as an adult, Douglas Stewart, the Black Wolf of Scotland has come to take her home to be his wife, by order of the king.  Why is the king demanding this marriage?  Will Lady Isobel tell her new husband of her unwanted ability, insane mother and evil father?

This medival romance combines fictional characters with real life people and events.  They are interwoven into a tale of parental manipulation at it's worse with faith, hope and love at it's best.  Though this is the second book in the series, it solidly stands on it's own.

On to Making Over Mr. Right by Judi McCoy.  Theo Maragos is the stereotypical computer nerd who's company is ready to go public and reap the financial rewards.  Zoe Degodessa is on a mission to add beauty to the world as the Muse of Beauty.  Daddy Zeus has given her one year, but she's not allowed to fall in love with a mortal.  When Theo hires Zoe to revamp his apartment for a magazine photo shoot, lightening bolts from Mount Olympus start to fly.

A contempory romantic fantasy, this third book in Judi's series wraps up the Muses' quest to get on the good side of Daddy Dearest and live happily ever after on Mount Olympus.  Lucky for us, love is in the air as Zoe fights her attraction to Theo while doing makeovers, one woman at a time.  Fun, flirty, fantasy that'll have you looking twice at the IT guys in your office.

Ok, now it's your turn to tell everyone what you've been reading this week.  Don't be shy.

Bottom Line:  Drying my eyes now because spring training has started and soon I'll be able to cheer on my summer love, the Milwaukee Brewers!  (Of course, that implies that we will be having summer here in the frigid Midwest)

I read Warrior's Bride by Gerri Russell a few months ago--fantastic book! I definitely recommend it. My daughter enjoyed it, too, and wrote a 5-star review on Amazon. ````` Ah, baseball. Yes, I'm a fanatic, and I'll be rooting for the Mariners to take it all this year. I hope they do okay since they did trade a tremendous amount of talent for one pitcher. [wince] ````` As for books, I just received Brides of the West, an anthology by Michele A. Young, Kimberly Ivey, and Billie Warren Chai. I can hardly wait to start reading! But alas, I have work to do. :(

We are all crushed at our house about Brett. He is a class act. But, you're right, baseball season is right around the corner, hooray!

This week I reread Marjorie Liu's Tiger Eye. I love the Dirk and Steele series.

I've been reading "Chosen" by P.C. Cast & Kristen Cast. It's the third book in their House of Night Series and it's great.

Wasn't Favre awesome in his interview yesterday? So open and real. I admire him. I read Bride Enchanted by Edith Layton. She's such a good writer, and I enjoyed it. Now I'm reading Repossessed by A.M. Jenkins. It's a YA book, and on the cover there's an award for excellence stamp from the American Library Association. The book is great fun -- different and fresh and a joy to read.

We have the Brewers' AA farm team here in my town, but since my boys are grown and gone, I rarely go to games. Haven't been in 2 years I think. Brett who? Just kidding. I don't follow football but I know his name. I've been reading Close to Perfect by Tina Donahue.

I'm still in mourning. We sure will miss Brett. Thing is, I think we'll miss Deanna, too. One very classy, wonderful lady! I'm reading My Wildest Ride, a Blaze by Isabel Sharpe, and have The Jane Austin Book Club on the iPod.

I'm catching up on C.S. Harris' terrific mystery series (What Angels Fear; When Gods Die; and Why Mermaids Sing). Set in Regency England (1811), they feature a handsome-but-troubled young Viscount, Sebastian St. Cyr, who investigates crime among the aristocracy. He also has a hot romance going with actress Kat Boleyn (who has a tragic past). Exciting stories with great characters and settings.

I highly recommend Warrior's Bride! It's a fantastic read. Gerri Russell writes with great emotional depth. This week I wasn't actually reading romance. I just finished World Without End by Ken Follett. I recommend it for anyone who likes historical fiction with lots of twists.

We bought an HDTV this week so we could watch baseball. We're fanatics. We lived in the spring training home of the Twins and Red Sox, and now we're in Arizona, spring training home for lots of teams. We have tickets for one game, but we LOVE the Detroit Tigers, and we'll see them in two games when they come to Arizona. Anyone who loves traditional mysteries, with a village setting should read Louise Penny. I just finished her third Inspector Armand Gamadge mystery, The Cruelest Month, and it was beautiful. Barbara--I'm so sorry about the insurance issues. What a pain in the patoot! I've read Warrior's Bride. It's a fantastic book--sympathetic characters struggling against treachery in a vivid and evocative setting. The nautical details are very well done, adding a realistic note without dumping info. I'm not reading much fiction these days. The last thing I read was Parable of the Sower by the late Octavia Butler. I use it in a class I teach. It's a dark, post-ecological-apocalypse tale set in the near future. It seems prescient in view of some of our current headlines and the aftermath Hurricane Katrina.

Ditto to Gina's comment about Gerri Russell's writing. The Warrior's Bride and her first book, The Warrior Trainer, are deeply satisfying, emotional stories with well-rounded, appealing characters. I haven't been reading any fiction recently. Researching. Liverworts and mosses! And I have two biographies I'm about to dip into--Antonia Fraser's Marie Antoinette: The Journey and Queen of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution, by Caroline Weber.

Barbara - Thanks for featuring Gerri Russell's books. The Warrior Trainer, her first book, is great. In my opinion the second in the series, your featured book, Warrior's Bride, is even better. The characters pop off the pages and come to life! I anxiously wait for the third in the series to be released October 2008.

I felt the same way when I heard Brett was retiring. BUt then I thought, he deserves the rest and to go out on his own terms -- the way we want our heroes to go. You're right, though, Sundays won't be the same without him.

You're right, Sunday afternoons won't be the same without Brett. It'll take me a while to bring the same enthusiasm to watching the Packers, even though I'm a cheesehead from birth. And, coincidentally, my number during my field hockey days - long before Brett started with Green Bay - was 4. Coincidence or cosmic destiny? Right now, my reading material is slightly dry - How to Create a Business Plan, an online course - so I can write a business plan for my husband's fledgling enterprise. I've got Jane Feather's The Bride Hunt sitting in front of me, but I'm dutifully ignoring it until I get through some of my work.
