Lori Foster at WisRWA
Lori Foster speaking at WisRWA

There's a lot to be said for going to a smaller conference.  Much  more one on one time and so you really get to know people more than just a passing hello.  Seminars are more intimate and you have a better chance at winning a raffle.  (Of course, this doesn't apply to me since I could have 99 out of the 100 tickets in the drawing and they'd call the one I didn't have).

Lori Foster was the lead off speaker today talking about "How to Avoid the Pitfalls in our Industry."  Lori stressed that everyone goes through success and failure.  She wrote 10 books before being published and it's just not productive to go into a funk every time you get rejected.  Lori also explained why you can't expect your family to "get it."  She cited the first time her book made it to number 2 on the New York Times bestseller list and she called her 85 year old dad with the good news.  His response:  "Well Honey, maybe next time you'll make number one."

Laurel Bradley had her book cover made into a purse.  Adorable!

Susan Kearney spoke on "How to Sell Your First Book."  Her advice:  Do what the editor wants you to do.  Ask questions about what they want and be specific.  The more you learn, the better you'll sell.

Janice Maynard talked about having a tough skin to deal with criticism, disappointment and rejection.  She entertained the audience with stories of being a minister's wife while writing erotica under an alias.  I overheard some authors remarking on Janice's advice for husbands and wives to read the book together in bed.  It sounded like they wanted to rush home and try it.

Awarding first sales:  Mary Biebel, Laurel Bradley, Renee Wildes, Sandra Turriff, Sandra Marshall, Debi Farr, Ilona Fridl

At lunch I sat between Liz Kreger and Emily Howard (one of the WW Ladies) and they each won a raffle basket with Emily winning two, along with the books used as centerpieces.  Lucky girl!

The evening ended in a party suite, where the popular beverages were brandy and melon slushes.

Bottom Line:  Leaving at 6 a.m. to head home to my niece's confirmation.  More coffee please.

It was a fabulous conference. I met so many new people and put faces to familiar email names. Now I'm exhausted. I'll be in bed early tonight.

This looks like a great conference and such fun. Very informative too. I love the book/purse--never would have thought of that myself.
