BEA: The Sunday Quiet Zone

June 1, 2009

"I can read you like a book Dude."

Sunday at BEA is like walking into a ghost town compared to the other days of the convention.  Those brave souls who are left seem to move a little slower, winding down a whirlwind weekend.  Many displays were actually packing up already, but there were still a few bargains to be had.

Since all the free bags were a thing of the past, I found a smal vendor in the librarian section, Wonder-Shirts, Inc. selling the most adorable book bags.  You know, with the whimsical creatures and the cute sayings like "A book in my hand and a dog by my side,"  "Too many books...too little time," and "There's no such thing as too many books."  I wanted them all.

Gena Showalter signing for DC Comics Maven Syndee Barwick
I just had to have one and that only led to one more thing...more books.  There were still autographing sessions going on, so I got a book on decorating (giving as a gift), some kids books for my granddaugher, and a sci-fi book.  These authors were all new to me and it's great discoveries made that way.

I did manage to score the last copy of James Patterson's much sought after Witch and Wizard.  He was signing on Saturday, but the line was much too long for me, so it was great to get the book.  Then I was sent to the Symtio booth and they were giving away little speakers that you could attach to your iPod, iPhone or new Playaway system.  The sound wasn't the best for audio books, but was great with music.

In the end I lugged about 15 heavy books out of there, but got a great surprise at my hotel when my son, Keith, arrived on a business trip.  We lunched with author Marjorie Liu and then went on a walking tour of the Times Square area.  All these people just take my breath away.  And now that they closed off part of the street and set up lawn chairs just makes it surreal to me.

Keith and I ended the day with dinner at a little restaurant with author Leanna Renee Hieber and WW Ladies blurber (and aspiring author), Stacey Agdern.  Great food, fine wine and stimulating conversation.  It was exciting to have Keith see the other side of his mom (you know, the witty and charming part).

BEA may be over for this year, but I've got one more day here in NY and I plan to make the most of it.  Next week I'm off to Green Bay for WisRWA (Wisconsin Romance Writers of America) conference.

Monday Giveaways:
Due to popular demand, I'll now post on Mondays any contests that authors are having on thier websites.  Here's your chance to win big.  Visit these authors/publishers:

From Clea Simon:   I'm giving away a brand new, signed large-print copy of Probable Claws. People can find out more (there is a question involved) from my blog.

Author Jennifer Haymore is giving away a boxful of Victoria’s Secret products to celebrate the release of her debut novel A HINT OF WICKED.

Author Jeanne Adams will
give away a copy of Dark and Deadly to a commenter on the blog and someone who sees it on BHB blog if they'll send me an email at Jeanne@JeanneAdams.com with PW in the subject box.  Random drawing at the end of the week.

From the Writers Playground:  June 16th Big Hair Day on the blog and if you send us pictures of your Texas Hair, your Mall Bangs, your poodle perm, or even that asymmetrical Flock of Seagulls hairstyle you wore so proudly, there will be competitions, bragging rights to be gained, prizes, and much amusement at what used to be so attractive.  Send your entries here.

Anyone interested in being included in this Monday Feature may email me at barbaravey@gmail.com.  Include one sentence to describe your giveaway and your website address.  Subject of email:  Monday Giveaways

Bottom Line:
BEA was more than I imagined.  Hard to top this one, but I'm always up for suggestions.

Barb: Thanks for pointing out Wonder-Shirts, Inc. They have an absolutely adorable selection of T-shirts and totes on their website from some fave authors, including Edward Gorey. I enjoy your mentioning the new authors you find at the conventions but the 'extras' are fun too!

Barbara
A couple of your contest links have some extra code in them which prevents the links from working.

Thanks for the BEA recap. Free books in cute book bags are every bit as wonderful as Hugh Jackman. And easier to fit in your suitcase.

Off to burn all the '80s shots of my hair crimping days. Shudder.

Sounds like you had a fabulous time. Hey, it's NYC! And Books! How could you not? <br><p>

Loved the photo of you, and yeah, when I saw the pictures of Times Square now turned into a suburban mall parking lot, I had to wonder What Were They Thinking? <p><br> Maybe a pedestrian only area (though what would you do with shopping bags and walking a couple blocks from your hotel in the pouring rain to get a cab?), but people sitting around on tacky lawn chairs just seemed to take away the energy of Times Square as being the "crossroads of the world!"

Thanks for the BEA reports! I was just down the street (32d andBroadway) at the Backspace Writers Conference all weekend! Smaller conference (capped at 200 people) but a lot of authors, critics, publicists, and more giving real world advice to newbies! Maybe next year you can drop by?

Great that you could combine BEA and a visit with your son. Great too that he can see your other side. I look forward to seeing you at RWA. Right now I'm sorta laid up with a cast on my foot (plantar fasciitis). I can't drive so I'm housebound. This is only day 2. But the cast comes off on Friday before RWA. I'm counting the days -- lots of them. LOL!
