K-Con and Monday News

October 12, 2009
One fan had this special cover made for her computer

K-Con ended like it started with about 200 of Sherrilyn Kenyon's self proclaimed Minions hugging and wishing each other well.  There was a delicious southern country brunch which, or course, included grits (sorry, I never developed a taste for them).  More prizes were raffled off and all the proceeds went to the American Red Cross.  Then Sherrilyn did what she is best known for (other than writing terrific books), she signed books for the final 3 hours sending her Minions home with lasting memories of Dark-Hunters, League members, Lords of Avalon and New Orleans.  Me?  I'm still dusting off the powder sugar from the beignets.

Other news I heard this week:

From author Debra Mullins:
I just got home from the Emerald City Conference thrown by the Greater Seattle chapter of Romance Writers of America.  What a great time!  My workshop on self-editing had been selected to be part of the schedule, and luckily for me I had been assigned the first slot on Friday.  This left me free to enjoy the rest of the conference as an attendee all day Saturday and Sunday.  There is so much going on at any one time—workshops suitable for new writers and advanced ones, editor/agent appointments, a huge book signing, gift baskets, karaoke…  The list goes on and on.

Some of the authors I had the pleasure of hearing included Christine Warren, Deborah Cook, Lisa Jackson, Katie MacAlister and Yasmine Galenorn. Bob Mayer was on hand presenting Introduction to Warrior Writer, a brief version of his fabulous full day workshop, and his room was packed. The entire conference slate was like a who’s who in the romance writing community.  In addition, the members of GSRWA are an extremely welcoming bunch.  I went to the conference knowing no one and came back with business cards for new friends in my pocket and a membership brochure in hand. Emerald City could very well become my absolute must-attend conference of the year!

From Cherie Burbach I'm interviewing Barbara Vey on my blog,  Working Writers, and the blog is posted today.  Stop by to say hi.

From author Tracy Devlyn Romance University is a group blog dedicated to helping writers establish and advance their careers, introducing readers to a variety of authors, and delving into the ever-inscrutable male mind. RU's faculty (aspiring authors Adrienne Giordano, Kelsey Browning and Tracey Devlyn) blog three times a week--Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Mondays are Crafting Your Career where visiting professors answer questions about the business side of writing. Wednesdays are Anatomy of the Male mind where we explore the male psyche, which never fails to entertain. And Fridays are Chaos Theory of Writing where visiting professors discuss the writing craft. We've also recently launched three "Lab" sections: Ask an Editor with Theresa Stevens, Managing Editor at Red Sage Publishing; Query Writing 101 with C.J. Redwine, urban fantasy writer; and Wayne Wednesday with Wayne Levine, Director of the West Coast Men's Center.

From Jodi Rosoff, Associate Director of Publicity, Berkley / NAL Penguin Group (USA) :  We’re pleased to announce that the latest episode of Project Paranormal is now Live! This episode features an exclusive interview with #1 New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harrisand several of our favorite paranormal authors including Jeanne C. Stein, Marjorie M. Liu, Kat Richardson, Chris Marie Green, and Rob Thurman.  Stop by to check it out.

Monday Giveaways

From Susan Hanniford Crowley: In celebration of the release of her new paranormal erotic romance book ETERNAL DESIRE, Roxanne Rhoads will be giving away a Fang-tastic Books desk set which includes a mousepad, notepad and pen to one lucky winner from the US (48 states only) who visits the Nights of Passion blog on Oct. 14 or 15th and leaves a comment.on her interview.

Bottom Line:
Home again for a little bit and then off to Crime Bake in Boston and Murder and Mayhem in Muskego.  It's a rough job, but someone's got to do it (and sorry, I don't need an assistant) <g>

Barbara --

You get to go to the coolest places! Lucky you -- Crime Bake and Murder & Mayhem!

Thought about you while flying today. Tom and I are enjoying a cross-country flight in the Lancair, heading back to Denver. Refueling in Kansas City. Wish you were flying with us.

Thanks again for doing the 'Fly with Barbara and Margie' donation for Brenda Novak's Diabetes Auction. You're the best!

KUDOS to Tracey, Adrienne, and Kelsey. I'm impressed with their ROMANCE UNIVERSITY blog. It is stellar.

All smiles........Margie

Good morning Barbara! You could have brushed off that powdered sugar from the beignets into the grits! With a little butter too, they are great! But I know you are into a much healthier lifestyle! Thank you to Debra Mullins--having just returned from Seattle, I enjoyed reading her comments (& the others too)!

Hey Barbara
Thanks again for the K-Con reports. The Seattle RWA conference sounds like it was stellar from Debra Mullins report. Hmmm Never been to Seattle. May have to think about it.

Have a great time at your NEXT conference and I will look forward to reading the report! :)

It's hard to beat beignets with 4 pounds of powdered sugar on them. :) Alas and alack, we didn't have any at the Emerald City Writers' Conference, but we sure did have a great time. I co-presented two workshops--one on dragons with Eilis Flynn and one on 1stTurningPoint.com with Ann Charles. Besides the terrific authors that Debra Mullins mentioned, we were privileged to have Stella Cameron, Karen Harbaugh, Susan Andersen, Jane Porter, and a host of others. But there was one thing missing . . something that saddens us deeply [pout]. We weren't graced by the mahvelous Barbara Vey. But there's next year! Oct. 1 to 3. :) :) :)
