Wet This, that and the other thing

June 9, 2008
Barbara Vey
At the hotel, slaving away at the blog.  Need more coffee!!

While I was at Lori Foster's Reader and Writer Get-Together this weekend in Cincinnati, tornados, heavy rain and flooding  belted Milwaukee and my hometown, South Milwaukee, declared a state of emergency.  I have a condo and my neighbor called to let me know the basements were flooded.  Not to worry, Andrew went over to check it out and took care of everything.

So, when I tried to drive home Sunday, a lot of the highways were flooded.  Lucky for me, my son, Keith, lives near St. Louis (where it's sunny and dry), so that's where I headed for the next few days.

Now on to the news, happenings and kudos I've heard about this week.

The Power of Love
First off, from author Lori Foster:   The get-together did very well for charities.  We got a LOT of great troop donations, and $526.  For the AAF (Animal Adoption Foundation) we have: $1064 plus a lot of needed supplies were dropped off.  For the Conductive School of Learning, we have: $4552.50.  Barnes and Noble is donating 15% from the book sales, but we won’t know that amount until Monday or Tuesday. It’ll get added to the donation to the Conductive School of Learning for kids with cerebral palsy and spina bifida.

I’m tired, but so happy with how the weekend went!  (Lori, Dianne and Linda did an amazing job and this looks to get even better next year, so keep the date open)

From author Christine Feehan:  Here's something kind of cool and unusual.  I have a music video book trailer starring my daughter Cecilia, with music written by COS Productions CEO Sheila Clover English, for the upcoming, Turbulent Sea.  Watch the video here.  (Book trailer/music video combo...what a novel idea.  Ok, I thought it was funny, but I did watch the video and now I want to see the movie...after I read the book, of course!)

At RT, while I was stalking doing a video with Adrian Paul, Michelle Buonfiglio of Romance: B(u)y the Book was getting in bed (literally) with Fabio.  I saw Michelle this weekend and she let me know the video is up, so you can see it all here (And no, I didn't ask her who she was in bed with this weekend)

From author Kathryn Caskie:  Be sure to tune in to HGTV (Home and Garden Television) Monday, June 9th at 5 p.m. and get a peek inside and out of my 200 year old house on If Walls Could Talk(I love to look inside other people's houses...in a non-Peeping Tom kind of way)

Guide to Pirate Parenting
From author Tim Bete:  I created two short pirate parenting videos.  The first video is a quiz to determine if your children are already pirates -- a very useful thing to know. It might explain why your wallet is always empty. It's just three minutes long.  The second video tells the story of how I met Cap'n Billy and his persuasive reasons why you should raise your kids as pirates (e.g., other parents will stop asking you to volunteer at school.) It's just two minutes long.

Enjoy the videos and feel free to share them with the rest of your crew.  Happy sailing and don't let the bilge rats bite.  (I never thought I'd raised pirates, but looking back, it may explain a lot)

I'm always looking for news, kudos or info on what's going on, so if you have any firsts (first sale, first time on bestseller list, won an award) or something newsworthy, just send me an email and I'll get on as much as possible.

Bottom Line:
Weather forecast for St. Louis area:  Rain.    <sob>

Hi Barbara:
Just a note to say thanks for the great laughter and conversation at Lori's conference, where I was soliciting, um, stalking, um pursuing authors to be guests at my library and promote books. I also wanted everyone give kudos to great the ladies of the Ohio Valley RWA. They have been so great to my library and they support our local libraries with booksignings, donations and time.

It was also great to finally meet you, as I enjoy your blog very much. Hopefully, we shall meet over chocolate, books and great conversation again! Linda the Looney Librarian!!!!

Sounds like a great event and you certainly look like you were working hard. I hope the waters recede quickly and you have no damage. Lucky that you have a place to stay. Plus you get to visit with family. See you in San Fran. It's not long!

Whoo'd a thought that we would ever have music videos for our beloved books?
Kind of gives a new perspective!
Glad you are safe from the flooding

Hi Barb! Loved your Lori Foster blog. It was great seeing you again. Sorry to hear you got caught up in the missing bridge at I-65 in NW Indiana. That's my neck of the woods!

If you attend next year, you'll have to come with us to Jungle Jim's. Some of the local gals put us onto this place in Fairfield, not far from the Marriot. It's the biggest international grocery store I've ever seen! We stopped on the way out of town and spent an hour and a half in the place. Not only does it have everything under the sun in the way of unusual food products, the place is like an antique store/fun house! All under two acres of roof! Unbelieable. A must see for all Lori Foster conferencees next year!

Jo

Barb, I love your jammies! Very professional! LOL.
I'm thrilled that you enjoyed yourself, and I've got my fingers and toes crossed that you can make it again next year.

Both Dianne and I very much appreciate you sharing our totals on your blog. We're so proud of our volunteers who worked very hard, and all the authors and readers who donated so generously!

Big hugs,

Lori

I'm so bummed I wasn't able to attend the Get Together. I'll definitely be there next year. I'm finishing the third story in Power of Love. Wonderful, wonderful writing. It's amazing how generous authors can be with their time, advice, and talent. The authors of POL are top notch.

Cute jammies, btw. Take care!

Barbara, thanks so much for stopping by the small press authors tables. We really appreciated you coming by to say hello. And as for the picture, your PJs are awesome, but I want to know how you actually were able to get work done! *grin* I visited with folks until 1am Friday and Saturday and fell asleep at the laptop after they left. LOL

Hi Barbara -

I don't think those pjs got much real use since it seemed like you were on the go this whole weekend...but they are cute. It's always a hoot to spend a couple days with you! (Tip - follow Barbara around as she does interviews - that's worth filming). Lori, Dianne and Linda put on one rockin' event. I think the next one is June 5-6,2009 - I'm planning on it.

Hope things at home dry out soon and everyone can get repaired quickly. Those were scary storms.

Stay safe and hugs on the storm damage.

The Turbulent Sea Original Music Video/Book Trailer is so innovative. The acting, song-everything, was put together nicely & gave the audience a feel for what the book will be like (hot & exciting!)

Sorry to hear about the flooding, I'm glad it could get taken care of, a lot of people have been hard hit all over the country at the same time. I'm so glad Michelle's in-bed-with-Fabio bit has been referenced, it's so awesome.
