Buy Indie Day on Your Turn Friday

May 1, 2009
May 1st has been declared Buy Indie Day. It's a great premise, just buy one book, audiobook, large print book, whatever you want...just buy it from an independent bookstore.  I'm sure this won't make the larger chains go out of business, but it just may help the little guys stay around a little longer.  I keep thinking about the movie, "You've Got Mail."  After all, Mother's Day is just around the corner and you could do two great things at one time.

I've got no books to report that I've read this week because I've been honored (and believe me when I say, as an avid reader, honored) to be asked to write cover quotes for a few books.  So I can't say what they are at this time, but I'm totally blown away by the first one.  (Teased enough yet?)

I'm trying something new (for me) while writing the blog...burning incense.  I got some as a gift and I've got to say that I liked it better in the 70's and 80's.  I think I'm having flashbacks now (I'm sorry I cut my long hair, I wish I would have told Sam how much I liked him and I wish I could have stayed awake at that Fleetwood Mac concert).

Now you can either let us know what you've been reading lately (it is Your Turn Friday after all), or tell us what you plan to buy at that local indie store.  I'm off to look for a large print book for my mom.  She loves suspense, so wish me luck because large prints aren't plentiful at stores.

And don't forget to read tomorrow's blog when we start the YA blurbs written by YA readers, Saturday Breakfast (Book) Club.

Bottom Line:  Dumping the incense and lighting up the apple pie candle...whole different kind of flashbacks.

Here's the You've Got Mail Trailer, but I'm disappointed that they don't really show how he's a rat trying to shut down her little bookstore.

I loved You've Got Mail, but it bothered me too that he shut down her adorable shop. As for Indie book day, I'm off to a little shop to buy some books for a baby shower. I love giving the new baby books while everyone else gives the same old sleepers. :)

I'm going to pick up Blue Diablo by Ann Aguirre. Also, maybe something literary. I'm feelin' that a bit right now. Daniel Benioff's City of Thieves.

I just finished Stephanie Bond's 5 Bodies to Die for. I love the Body Movers series! 4, 5, and 6 are their own trilogy within the series. Can't wait for 6.

I also read Linda Fairstein's Lethal Legacy. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The continued history of New York is fascinating and I loved the history of maps. I do wish for a little more relationship in Alex Cooper's life although it looks like things are growing with her Frenchman!

I liked YOU GOT MAIL and was sad that the little bookstore had to close. I spent time with Iris Johansen's DEADLOCK, James Patterson's RUN FOR YOUR LIFE and Jill Shalvis' INSTANT ATTRACTION.

I read Then Comes Seduction by Mary Balogh. Like Cynthia Eden, I have Amanda Quick's The Perfect Poison waiting for me. That probably comes in large print.

Amazingly a new indie bookstore opened in next town, joining another. Gotta check out this Pudd'nhead Books in St. Louis burb, the other I know is beautiful, like the one in YouGotMail.

I just finished a cute new paranormal romance - kind of chick lit in the style of MaryJanice Davidson's Betsy Taylor series. It's called "Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs" by Molly Harper. Very funny and it is apparently the first in a new series. Next book is out in September I believe.

Hmm, I just finished Sarah Wendell and Cindy Tan's Beyond Heaving Bosoms which was a great read. I've just started reading Eve of Darkness by S.J. Day and I'm reading The Alexander Cipher by Will Adams. They both sounded interesting, so I decided to buy them.
